The most pretentious film ever made...

2001: A Space Odyssey is incredible mess of movie, the writers Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke obviously felt that a lot of random uninteresting long scenes make a whole film. It has a plot which doesn't go anywhere: In the opening scene monkeys learn the use of the bone as a weapon, it then suddenly cuts to a man on a spaceship who we follow for about an hour and then disappears totally from... read more

"Good morning, Dave."

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is a truly groundbreaking, unforgettable, incredible science fiction experience unlike any other film you are ever likely to see. Kubrick is a true visionary, and the entire film is a visual feast that will be devoured by the eyes of science fiction fans.

Many filmgoers will look upon 2001 as a load of tri... read more

"Reason for the future sucking: Is it a good or bad idea, to have life support regulated by a free thinking, super intelligent computer? Year it takes place: 2001, obviously."

Nick's Top 100 Films (100 movies items)

""he picture that science fiction fans of every age and in every corner of the world have prayed (sometimes forlornly) that the industry might some day give them. It is an ultimate statement of the science fiction film, an awesome realization of the spatial future ... it is a milestone, a landmark for a spacemark, in the art of film." - Charles Champlin"

500 Essential Cult Movies (502 movies items)

" A film of dazzling complexity- philosophically, technically, and culturally- 2001 redefined the sci-fi genre. It wasn't just the mind-blowing subject matter; this was a movie where everything looked like it worked, aided and abetted by stunning special effects. Just don't try to understand it- simply sit back and enjoy a long, luxurious flight of fantasy. "

ALL-TIME 100 Revisited (20 movies items)

"What’s happening at the beginning (when apes discover a giant slab and hurl a bone in the air)? What’s the meaning of the ending (when an astronaut ages in space and morphs into a star child)? Not many science-fiction films encourage the audience to ask those questions. An essay on man’s destiny, 2001 was for some of its late-’60s viewers a light show, a head trip, needing no earthbound explanations. Making the first mainstream movie to foreground its special effects, Kubrick and his bri"
