As a classic and given the time that this film was made it is an excellent film. James Mason makes a wonderful version of Captain Nemo. However, the film just dragged in too many places for me to not be overly aware of the flaws. The overly blonde Kirk Douglas took his shirt off far too many times and the numerous fist fights were dull. The 'three guests' of Nemo just don't work very well as an antithesis of humanity or at least they didn't force that enough in the film."
"" There was Typhoon Tessie: met her on the coast of Java. When we kissed, I bubbled up like molten lava. Then she gave me the scare of my young life. Blow me down and pick me up, she was the captain's wife!"
- Ned Land
Kirk Douglas is one of the most delightfully cheerful and peppy heroic figures of the movies here, and James Mason's Captain Nemo is equally intriguing as a twisted idealist. A ripping good adventure yarn. Family friendly, but with a lot of substance."

For me, Leagues is a movie that if it were just any sci-fi movie, would still be one the best sci-fi movies of it's time. But the fact that it was made by Disney, & comprising some of the typical "Disney conventions" (which I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of), makes it an even remarkable achievement for a classical sci-fi thriller.

I was a great fan of Walt Disney. Everything Disney did, I fell for: the live-action stuff - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island; all the cartoons, Pinocchio. As far as other animation, Mr. Magoo was good. I never knew who the other great animators were, despite watching their cartoons. Even after I was in Python, I never knew who Chuck Jones was. Or Tex Avery. They represented a shift from Disney, but in all of them there is the creation of these amazing worlds. That's what Disney a"
