10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

This was so last high school. But I must confess it was my era of chick flicks. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger weren't my typical cute couple. In fact, I liked Joseph Gordon Levitt and Larisa Oleynik's tandem more.

But yes, there are a lot of sappy and lines in this film and I would definitely want to see it again. Plus, the soundtrack rocks! :)

I really don't know how many times I've watched this movie, but it never gets old. 10 things I Hate About You is a modern version of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. Before I watched this movie, I had not seen The Taming of the Shrew. Regrettably, I still haven't seen it, but 10 Things I Hate About You was awesome all the same. On the surface this movie may seem to be some highschool chick flick. But it really isn't. Patrick Verona, played by Heath Ledger, is one of the main characters who pursues Kat Stratford, played by Julia Stiles. In what started out as a buisness deal, he finds himself falling for Kat. "What is it with this chick? She have beer-flavored nipples?" First of all, I must state that I really detest watching bad sappy chick flicks that supply very limited laughs. But I'm a sucker for quality chick flicks. 10 Things I Hate About You comfortably sits in the 'quality chick flick' section. The film is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew; changing the setting to a high school and changing the characters to typical teenage youths. It was always going to be a bold move to reinvent a Shakespeare play for contemporary audiences, but this film does an exceptional job and succeeds remarkably well. One of the best teenage romantic comedies out there today. And on, it's not just because it has Heath Ledger ..not that he looked bad at all =P I guess you could say that the plot is kind of unoriginal. Only because there are so many teenage flicks like this, but this one really stood out for me. Basically a new guy comes to school and instantly falls for Bianca, a pretty and popular chick. But her father is overprotective and only agrees to let Bianca go out when her sister does. Only problem is, her sister, Kat, is not exactly as popular at school as Bianca. So the guy bribes a bad boy to go out with Kat so that he can be with Bianca.. but he's not the only one that wants Bianca. Taming of the Shrew gets transformed to the modern day high school teenage rom-com complete with pop culture references. Could have been really crass, but actually ended up with charming characters you didn't hate and genuinely funny sections. The application of a non-one-dimensional plot helps lift this above the shoulders of it's competition.

Wow, that sounded pretentious. It's a fun film. See it.
