Selon Maïwenn, sa mère décide dès sa naissance de faire d'elle une « star ». Maïwenn fait ses débuts sur les planches à l'âge de trois ans et court les castings sur l'injonction de sa mère, pour lui faire plaisir et sans se poser de questions sur sa propre vocation. Elle déclare plus tard : « ma mère ne m'aimait qu'à travers un écran de cinéma ». L'agente artistique Myriam Bru témoigne : « Sa mère n'avait pas fait de carrière et voulait à tout prix qu'elle soit actrice. À trois ans, elle la traînait dans tous les castings. Après, Maïwenn y allait toute seule, un gosse dans chaque main, un autre dans le dos. C'était démentiel, extrêmement touchant, elle était leur maman. J'ai refusé d'être son agent. Je sentais trop le désir de la mère et pas assez celui de l'enfant ».
Maïwenn a par la suite des rapports difficiles, puis distants, avec ses parents, qualifiant sa mère d'« actrice ratée » qui aurait été poussée par la « névrose » à faire de sa fille une vedette. Elle déclare également avoir été victime de maltraitance physique de la part de ses deux parents, après leur séparation, ayant été battue par son père vers l'âge de sept ou huit ans, puis par sa mère durant son adolescence : « [Ma mère] a commencé à me frapper quand mon corps a changé, quand je suis devenue ado. Je sentais énormément de jalousie, elle n'arrivait plus à se positionner comme mère, elle se trouvait en concurrence. Je lui faisais peur. Ma mère dit que j'invente tout pour plaire aux journalistes, que j'ai trouvé mon fonds de commerce. Ma mère, c'est un poison pour moi. Elle me pourrit la vie. Elle épluche toutes mes interviews. Elle me harcèle d'un tsunami de mails et de messages sur mon portable comme quoi je suis mytho. Jamais elle ne se positionne comme la mère d'une victime. […] Elle a rédigé elle-même ma fiche Wikipédia, sans que je lui demande rien. […]. Dans mon milieu bobo, de gauche, psycho-Françoise-Dolto, on m'a toujours dit : « Arrête de croire que quand le bourreau demande pardon à sa victime, cela règle en partie le problème ». Elle se rapproche ensuite quelque peu de son père, tout en conservant avec sa mère des rapports conflictuels : « Mon père m’a maltraitée physiquement et verbalement. Mais il le reconnaît, c’est important. Ma mère, qui a été physiquement violente jusqu’à mes 15 ans, continue de nier. »
