Silent House (2011)
Absolute and utter bore of a movie devoid of scares. It relies upon a gimmick that would have us believe the entire thing is shot in a single, unbroken take. (It's not.) This gimmick does nothing to effectively contribute to anything satisfying. It only calls attention to how little else the movie has working in its favor and illuminates how unfortunate it is that Elizabeth Olson wasted her talent in this silly snooze-fest.

Worse yet, the late plot revelations confirm exactly where you knew the movie was going, but hoped it wasn't. So yes, we get some dark and depressing material that is supposed to add some heft and weight to the film, but actually only makes the experience more miserable. Avoid.

Meeting Evil (2012)
Probably the least memorable movie on the list, despite the fact that I saw it more recently than most of these titles. What I do know is that movies are made up of many different components. You've got direction, performance, story, dialogue, characterization, music... This movie had all these things. And they were all executed terribly.

Ted (2012)

Do you see a stale, unfunny premise for a labored and too-incoherent-and-plain-stupid-to-actually-be-offensive joke up there? Cuz that's exactly what it is, and this movie is full of them.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force
South Park
Family Guy

All animated television shows that range from moderately entertaining to, when at their best, genuinely comedic, clever, and inspired.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

All shitty feature film efforts delivered by these original series creators that have no idea what to do with 90 minutes and an 'R' rating.

Bland, bland, bland. Also predictable, corny, clumsy, and absolutely empty of anything with real meaning.

Wanderlust (2012)
Had this movie been funny it would've been a stupid, funny movie. Instead it's just stupid.

Chronicle (2012)
I've grown to hate the found-footage fad with all of my bitter little soul. In nearly every case it's simply the most anti- everything I love about well crafted movies phenomenon that I can think of. But honestly, I'm tired of ranting about it.

I know most people say, "This was really good for a found-footage movie." Wheres I think of it in terms of "this was a really shitty and self-defeating sci-fi movie."

Bunch of unlikeable people populating a smug movie with an "I'm better than you" attitude. Go fuck yourself Friends with Kids.

Contraband (2012)
It's just tired and lame. The fact that the movie tries to pretend it's a TOTAL BADASS just makes it more repulsive.

Oh, and hi-fives to Mark Wahlberg and Giovanni Ribisi for both appearing in two of the shittiest movies of the year together. Good thinkin' guys.

The world needs another 140 minute Rom-Com like I need another thing to go wrong with my fucking car.

Ugh. It's too soon to mentally revisit this movie. If you're curious you can read my thoughts on it here:

I do my best not to see shitty movies. I really do. So you're never going to find Adam Sandler's latest shitfest flick on one of my "Worst of" lists because I never saw it. Similarly, a 0% fresh-rated Eddie Murphy movie just won't ever get my time. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I gave a movie a 1/10 rating. This is by design.

But that said, I still make poor judgement calls every now and then. I'll see a movie that I damn well know will be bad, but for some reason or another I ignore my instincts. And then of course sometimes you get those movies that genuinely appear promising only they turn out to be total shit. Ah, and finally, now and then you get the case where I just hated a movie at a gut level, despite the fact that many or even most sensible enough people enjoyed it. There seems to be at least one of these every year, and this year is no exception.

Anyways, here's a recap of what went the most wrong for me in 2012.

Ah, and you may notice that my Worst of 2012 list is up, but my Best of 2012 list isn't. This is because I don't plan to see any more bad movies for the rest of the year, but I'm still hoping for a couple of good ones :)

All in all, 2012 has been a solid year at the cinema. Certainly more impressive than last year, I'd say.

The Golden Globes nominated Salmon Fishing in the Yemen for Best Picture... in the Comedy/Musical category... I wonder how hard they really laughed while watching that movie. They also nominated Emily Blunt for best actress for her performance in that movie, even though they had three other 2012 movies to choose from that she appeared in this year.

Yep, I saw that. It's baffling. There's no question that Bernie should've gotten the nomination in front of Salmon Fishing. And I would've rather seen the actress nomination go to Greta Gerwig for her work in Damsels in Distress or Maggie Gyllenhaal for Hysteria. Anyways, I think these are among the Golden Globe nominations that we can safely assume won't carry over into the Academy Awards.

*edit* The above conversation has been stripped of any context since I removed Salmon Fishing in the Yemen from it's original #10 spot in order to make room for Ted, a much much worse movie.
Posted: 5 years, 8 months ago at Dec 26 7:11
Hmmm...on the one hand, Ted looked too obnoxious & idiotic to watch so I had no urge anyway, even after some people around here sang its praises. And I used to love Family Guy until they ran out of steam by season 5, which doesn't help my disinterest in Seth MacFarlane's output.

On the other hand, I liked the South Park movie so much I abandoned the TV show for several years for not living up to it, and I thoroughly enjoy the Aqua Teen movie, almost as much as the best episodes of the TV show. So again I say hmmm....

I loved Ted and enjoyed Chronicle, but the rest of the movies look like crap, so here's a vote!
Posted: 5 years, 8 months ago at Dec 28 2:57
Wanderlust & Silent House are FAR from 2012's worst....mmmmm.
Posted: 5 years, 8 months ago at Dec 28 9:17
Yes, I'm sure you're right. But I don't make a habit of watching crap. So from what I did see...

I haven't had the displeasure of seeing any of these. Lucky me! ;)

Some I haven't even heard of but there's no way in hell I'll be watching Ted. Comcast is still running little mini-previews for it when I search for something to watch On Demand. I can't stress how sick it made me to see that little skit of Wahlberg rattling off girl's names in rapid-fire fashion. It got to the point I would mute the TV. (lol)

Personally, I liked the Chronicle and Contraband, especially I love Ted. The rest of the movies on this list I haven't seen and would rather not have them on my list of movies to watch.
Posted: 5 years, 6 months ago at Feb 26 15:18
Thank you for including TED. I thought I was the only person in the world who thought that movie was a piece of shit.
Posted: 5 years, 6 months ago at Feb 26 15:21
I thought Chronicle was ok, nothing special, but not too bad either. Contraband was pretty decent, in my opinion. As for the rest, I have no intention of seeing any of them, especially Ted.
Posted: 5 years, 6 months ago at Mar 21 23:34
Finally, I found a list where someone hates Chronicle. The moment I saw the trailer, all I felt was sheer annoyance, so I passed it up. You probably consider me lucky.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll barricade the doors and windows.
