La La Land (2016)
Emma Stone - Best Actress Nominee and likely to be the winner

How dare they put Emma Stone in the same category as such great ones like Meryl Streep and Isabelle Huppert!

Matthew McConaughey - Best Actor Winner

A sure sign that the Oscars have gone downhill. Previous winners have included Denzel Washington, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn, Tom Hanks, Robert DeNiro . . . .

Yes, I'm aware that the picture is from Magic Mike. I used it because it displays the real reason why Matthew McConaughey is successful.

Jennifer Lawrence - Best Actress Winner

Really? Out of all of the actresses in all of the films that year, Jennifer Lawrence was the best that they could find? Every time I've seen her in a movie, she has been pretty much the same. At least Zooey Deschanel (who was up for the role) can play diverse roles.

The Departed (2006)
Mark Wahlberg - Best Supporting Actor Nominee

Mark Wahlberg is easily the worst thing about the Departed. He is the same in practically every fucking role! He doesn't seem to have changed much since his Marky Mark era.

Gwyneth Paltrow - Best Actress - Winner

Gwyneth Paltrow, (aka nepotism personified) acually beat both Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep! That was no joke, but it should have been.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

John Travolta - Best Actor Nominee
Maybe my memory sucks, but didn't John Travolta basically play just another stereotypically John Travolta role?

Uma Thurman - Best Supporting Actress Nominee
Oh, come on! You've got to be fucking kidding!

Quentin Tarantino - Best Original Screenplay - Winner
Really? Francis Ford Coppola could probably pull a better script out of his bunghole!

I have to agree with you on Pulp Fiction's unnecessary nominations and Mark Wahlberg's supporting nom was a bit of a stretch. But the other four nominees certainly deserve their titles. Emma Stone was phenomenal in La La Land. Ever since Birman, her film projects have gotten more serious and critically acclaimed. She's transitioning out of the popular teen films and I believe she is shaping herself as the exquisite actress that she is.

McConaughey may be famed for his physique, but he was spectacular in Dallas Buyers Club. I wouldn't have minded had Chiwetel Ejiofor won over him for his role in 12 Years a Slave, but I don't have many complaints about McConaughey.

Likewise, Jennifer Lawrence was exceptional in Silver Linings Playbook. Although I do believe she may be a little too hyped up within the Academy, she delivered with this film and rightfully earned Best Actress. Her performance was real and felt authentic, which is why she won. Jessica Chastain was great in Zero Dark Thirty and Emmanuelle Riva could have snagged the Oscar with her performance in Amour, but Lawrence was the one to win in 2012.

Gwyneth is kind of iffy. She did give an excellent performance in Shakespeare in Love, but I would have personally chosen Blanchett as the winner. She still deserves some recognition and I'm content with her having garnered one.

Overall, I think it depends on the performance and the year, not the actor themselves.
