1. Mondo Cane (1962)

What is it about?
The film consists of a series of travelogue vignettes that provide glimpses into cultural practices around the world with the intention to shock or surprise Western film audiences. These scenes are presented with little continuity, as they are intended as a kaleidoscopic display of shocking content rather than presenting a structured argument. Mondo cane was an international box-office success and inspired the production of numerous, similar exploitation documentaries, many of which also include the word "Mondo" in their title. These films collectively came to be recognized as a distinct genre known as mondo films.

What is it about?
Mr. Page and his two sons and two daughters live a primitive life in the woods in southern England. In their unlikely setting the daughters pursue traditional female roles while the men devote a great part of their time to maintaining and driving their ancient Allchin and Fowler steam engines around their land to no apparent purpose apart from the sheer enjoyment of it.

5. The Late Great Planet Earth (1979)

(Before the movie, there was a book which was a huge bestseller back then...)

What is it about?
It is a treatment of literalist, premillennial, dispensational eschatology. As such, it compared end-time prophecies in the Bible with then-current events in an attempt to broadly predict future scenarios. Basically, they try to convince us that the Judgement Day is coming and all... According to Hal Linsdey, the guy who wrote the book "the decade of the 1980s could very well be the last decade of history as we know it"....

6. Vernon, Florida (1981)

What is it about?
It intersplices random chatter they captured on film of the genuinely eccentric residents of Vernon, Florida. A few examples? The preacher giving a sermon on the definition of the word "Therefore," and the obsessive turkey hunter who speaks reverentially of the "gobblers" he likes to track down and kill.

7. Burden of Dreams (1982)

What is it about?
It is about the chaotic production of Werner Herzog's epic Fitzcarraldo (1982), showing how the film managed to get made despite problems that would have floored a less obsessively driven director. Not only does he have major casting problems, losing both Jason Robards (health) and Mick Jagger (other commitments) halfway through shooting, but the crew gets caught up in a war between Peru and Ecuador, there are problems with the weather and the morale of cast and crew is falling rapidly.

10. The Emperor's Naked Army Marches on (1987)

What is it about?
It revolves around 62-year-old Okuzaki Kenzo, a survivor of the battlefields of New Guinea in World War II who gained notoriety by slingshooting steel pinballs at Emperor Showa to protest against what he considered to be the ruler's war crimes. Setting out to conduct interviews with survivors and relatives, he finds the truth of the past to be elusive, achieving a breakthrough only when he confronts ex-Sergeant Yamada, who grudgingly admits the occurrence and instructional source of certain atrocities.

13. Dancing Outlaw (1991)

What is it about?
It introduces us to Jesco White, a hard-living, tap-dancing Boone County resident whose repeated run-ins with the law have interfered with his dream of becoming as renowned a "mountain dancer" as his late father, D. Ray White. We meet Jesco's three distinct personalities; the gentle and loving Jesse, the violent and dangerous Jesco, and the extremely strange Elvis. We also encounter various members of Jesco's family, all nearly as eccentric as Jesco himself.

What is it about?

15. Dream Tower (1994)

(Ron Mann, the guy who has directed 'Dream Tower')

What is it about?
Dream Tower chronicles Toronto's most notorious social experiment of the sixties. Inspired by cultural critic Paul Goodman, philosophies of alternative education, and the decade's political upheaval, a group of young idealists established Rochdale as a free university and student residence in 1968. Rochdale's founders envisioned an enlightened community of self-educators, and the first 100 or so students, earnestly studying subjects such as Heidegger and anarchism in eight-hour seminars, made the dream seem possible. But they didn't anticipate that some people wouldn't know what to do with freedom, that hippies kicked out of Yorkville would overrun the building, or that drug-dealing motorcycle gangs would camp out in the lobby.

17. Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies (1993)

What is it about?
GG Allin was easily one of the most unpleasant and untalented individuals in the annals of rock music. He was crude, violent and utterly insane. Seeing him live was more like seeing a side-show Geek than going to a show. He hurled fences, he assaulted the audience, he was usually beaten up or arrested before the show even started... This movie follows GG Allin in the last weeks of his short life as he drinks, swears, fights, defecates and generally lives by his own misguided conceptions that what he's doing will really shock the world.

22. Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (1997)

What is it about?
What do an elderly topiary gardener, a retired lion tamer, a man fascinated by mole rats, and a cutting-edge robotics designer have in common? Both nothing and everything in this unconventional documentary. Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (Referring to the robot specialist's strange philosophy of robot design structure, not Erroll Morris's documentary techniques!) interplays, overlaps, and interrelates these four separate and highly specialized documentary subjects in order to in truth study all of humanity, raising questions about the future of mankind.

26. My Best Fiend - Klaus Kinski (1999)

What is it about?
In the 1950s, when Werner Herzog was 13, he was sharing an apartment with Klaus Kinski, an ego-maniacal live-wire. In an unabated, 48 hour fit of rage, Kinski destroyed every piece of furniture in sight. From this chaos, a beautiful albeit volatile partnership was born. In 1972, Herzog cast Kinski in Aguirre, The Wrath of God. Four more films would follow. In this personal documentary, Herzog traces the often violent up and downs of their relationship, revisiting Munich apartment where they first met - and thrashed, and the various locations of their films.

Suicide and murder are commonplace. People in the town are haunted by ghosts, possessed by devils and terrorized by teenage outlaws and arsonists.

30. As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Bri... (2000)

What is it about?
Much like Prousts "A la recherche du temps perdue" Mekas's, it is a reflection on the years of his life past as seen through the eyes of a man who is perceiving his own death. Mekas beautifully edits together the scraps of film that fell to his cutting room floor while he was working on projects he "perceived" as important, not realizing that what was truly important were the details that he missed, that he left out in favor of the shot in focus, the shot in composition. He strings together these family films of his children, his wife, his friends, New York during a lightning storm, all while narrating the film from what seems to be "His Death Bed." It is an homage to life as much as it is a recognition that beauty lies in the places we least expect it and as we walk we may occasionally catch brief glimpses of it, if we are lucky enough to have our eyes that wide open.

What is it about?

33. The Sweetest Sound (2001)

What is it about?
After a number of "Egosurfs," (which is the word given to the act of looking up your own name on the internet,) Alan Berliner found twelve other owners of his name and flew them out to New York for dinner.
The bulk of the film is put together with stock footage, man-on-the-street interviews (What does the name Alan bring to mind? One woman's response: Fat!) and old home movies. At the end of the film, Mr. Berliner encourages the viewers to write to him and tell them if they've recognized any of the faces in the stock footage as their own relatives.

People who added this item 26  Average listal rating (10 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating 6.9
34. Hell House (2001)

What is it about?
It provides a look at the "Hell House" performed annually in October by the youth members of Trinity Church (Assemblies of God) in Cedar Hill, Texas (a Dallas suburb) - seen by over 10,000 visitors each year. We see the organization and planning of the event - including auditions, construction, scripting and rehearsals - largely through the involvement of one family: a single father with 4 children (one of whom suffers from cerebral palsy) including his daughter, a cast member.

Hell houses are haunted attractions typically run by American, fundamentalist Christian churches or parachurch groups. These depict sin, the torments of the damned in Hell, and usually conclude with a depiction of heaven.

A hell house, like a conventional haunted-house attraction, is a space set aside for actors attempting to frighten patrons with gruesome exhibits and scenes, presented as a series of short vignettes with a narrated guide. Unlike haunted houses, hell houses focus on occasions and effects of sin or the fate of unrepentant sinners in the afterlife.

36. Cinemania (2002)

What is it about?
This documentary about the culture of intense cinephilia in New York City reveals the impassioned world of five obsessed movie buffs. The filmmakers expose this delightfully deranged cult by capturing the daily lives of its members. Interviews in movie houses, on the street and in the homes of the subjects tell the story of each individual. Many cannot hold a job, or choose not to. All of them have demoted the importance of the real world, giving all of their attention to the fantasy world of the movies. These human encyclopedias of cinema see two to five films a day, and from 600 to 2,000 films per year. Many have no physical sex lives, living instead in a world of romance with stars like James Dean or Audrey Hepburn. In Cinemania, Hollywood's biggest fans become the true stars. This is the story of their lives, their memories, their unbending habits and the films they love.

(I will probably NEVER watch this one. Way too confronting...)

Here is a not weird suggestion but a very good documentary:
I Knew It Was You:Rediscovering John Cazale
http://www.listal.com/movie/knew-you-rediscovering-john-cazale
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 16 11:53
@propelas, it seems to be indeed a very interesting documentary.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 11:11
The Bridge maybe?definitely a very "weird" film.
Anyway very good job!
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 11:16
@propelas, added!
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 11:29
Wow, I've only seen six of them, though I've always been interested in watching Zoo, "weird" as that may make me seem. Good job, I'll have to look for some of these.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 11:34
@lotr23, I have seen also only 6. Wow, 'Zoo' definitely belongs among the 'weirdest'! I'm not sure I would dare watch it. Some of them sound way scarier than your average hardcore horror movie.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 17:51
Great list. I've seen 9 of 'em, all of which I enjoyed to various degrees, and have been meaning to check out a few others. LOTS I've never heard of though, and this list will be a great tool for finding new docs! Thanks for posting!

Umm, also reminds me that I never made that documentary list I've been meaning too, darn it.

Zoo... Well, I'll watch almost anything once.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 18:30
I've also seen 6 of these, with a handful sitting in my queue, and now some others to add to it.

Tarnation is annoying as hell to watch.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 18:41
Awesome collection. Only seen two, but some of these seem really unbearable to watch.

I'd love to see the one about the dog being mayor, though. And I might have to see Crazy Love just so satisfy my curiosity.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 20:16
Love it! I have to check some of these out :)
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 20:45
Very useful, thanks! :)
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 7:49
You should add Emperor's Naked Army Marches on. It's a cinema verite-doc where the film crew follows a psychopathic japanese WW2 vet who tries to uncover atrocities committed during the second world war, and he does this by visiting his old superior officers and threathening their lives, belittling them and in one scene, actually tries to beat the truth out of one. It's riveting stuff.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 8:42
@VierasTalo, thanks for the suggestion! It has been added.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 13:06
This is actually one of the best lists on Listal. Most of the films seem very interesting.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 13:08
@Nosoki, Wow! Great comment!! Indeed, many of those movies seem very interesting and many of them are award winners.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 14:08
If I only knew how to speak and read french.Looks interesting
http://www.artcrimefilm.com/

Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 14:18
@littlesprout, I do speak and read French and it seems to be interesting but I'm not sure if it really fits in this list and it is unknown in IMDB and Listal.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 16:07
first of all wow, for your research because i most of these, i have never heard of. so yeah wanted to watch list has just increased! :)
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 16:09
@Zaishe, I know you don't like 'immoral' movies so you should be aware that some of those flicks are quite hardcore. Bare that in mind before watching those!
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 19 8:18
@Alice, I'm not sure I will watch it... It seems to be a rather tough watch.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 19 15:18
nice list, i'm looking for one that is about an old man, and their sons says that he killed people and hide the bodys in the basement. But he says that is not true. Maybe you can help me find it, thanks!
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 19 15:48
@lus-k, I'm afraid I don't know which movie you are talking about but if I bump into it, I'll get back to you.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Aug 20 0:25
Fantastic list!
In the Realms of the Unreal and
Dear Zachary are both great as well. :)

Need to add "Best Worst Movie"
http://www.listal.com/movie/best-worst-movie

Great list! Gave me a few more documentaries that I need to watch.
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Sep 8 7:09
Awesome list but this film NEEDS Einstein's Brain. It's all on Youtube and one of the best documentaries ever made.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0192519/
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Sep 13 21:06
I have to say that this is one of the best lists around here. Great finds. Just finished watching Cowboy Del Amor. One suggestion, though.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1583323/

Steam of Life. Finnish documentary about men speaking from the heart in sauna. If you are not familiar with concept of sauna it is a small room, which we finnish heat really hot and sit there naked. And there, for example, these men share heartbreaking stories about divorce, past criminal life, becoming a father, abusive childhood and so on. And there is also a bear.
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Sep 24 16:41
brilliant list! i only miss the documentaries "Animal Love" and "Jesus, you know" about pretty weird people from Ulrich Seidl.
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Sep 24 16:46
Very useful awesome list.

Posted: 2 years, 5 months ago at Oct 28 19:48
Nice list. Many interesting films too see here. Got a suggestion.

Reindeerspotting (2010)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1584813/

A Finnish documentary about Jani, a 19-year-old drug addict, who dreams of travelling the world, but is stuck in Finland. Very interesting, because it's basicly just homevideo footage shot by Jani's friend.
Posted: 2 years, 3 months ago at Jan 8 23:04
Just letting you know I've linked to this list from my January 2012 list. Thanks for the recommendation on Man on Wire. I loved it!
Posted: 1 year, 11 months ago at May 23 14:44
I just want to suggest a few weird documentaries:
1.A Million in the Morning
2.Darwin's Nightmare
3.Dream Tower

your list has a lot of my favorites on it and it has been fun watching the ones i'd not heard about.
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 5 14:57
- A Million in the Morning. I haven't seen it but according to this website ( http://www.rapreviews.com/archive/2010_04D_amillioninthemorning.html ), it is a mockumentary.
- Darwin's Nightmare. Why do you think it is a weird documentary? It sounds interesting but not really weird.
- F for Fake. I have seen it and it is definitely a mockumentary.

mockumentary = fake documentary.
Fake documentaries don't belong to this list

I still have to check the other suggestions
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 5 15:08
The Late, Great Planet Earth might fit here. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079445/
It's a doomsday documentary where basically EVERYTHING is predicted wrong. The world ends in 2000, yada yada. It wasn't so cooky back in the day when it came out, but seeing it nowadays is definately a fine, novel experience.
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 5 16:59
A Hole in the Head (1998) also seems to fit the bill. Bunch of people drilling holes into their skulls. You know, for better life. Sounds like a perfect way to spend your weekend. Then again...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202909/
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 6 9:26
- 'Dream Tower' has been added.
- 'As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty' has been added
- 'Sans Soleil' has been added
- 'The Late Great Planet Earth' has been added.
- 'A Hole in the Head' has been added (totally weird, by the way...).

Love this list. So many I still gotta check out but this list definitely needs I Think We're Alone Now, doc on two obsessed 80s pop star Tiffany fans.
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 25 8:21
@JayTrotter, indeed, some really weird sh*t... Thanks for the suggestion! It has been added.
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 25 10:06
very interesting list, I also suggest "Titicut Follies" and "Les Maitres Fous" if u didn't already see those.
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 25 11:04
@Zenn, I checked both movies but they don't seem to fit. 'Titicut Follies' seems more to be shocking and controversial than weird. I couldn't find enough info concerning 'Les Maitres Fous'.
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 25 12:23
I dunno, I found "Titicut Folies" interesting, beside the controversial side, for how subtly and ambiguously describes the all institution; even without "Les Maitres Fous"'s voice over it comes out almost as sarcastic as that one (the other is more obviously ironic).
And what do u say about 'mondo-movies' such as "Mondo Cane", "Farewell Africa" etc.?
Posted: 1 year, 10 months ago at Jun 25 12:54
@Zenn, 'Mondo Cane' has been added. Good call!

Some suggestions, I hope at least some of them qualify:

1. The Future Is Not What It Used to Be

About Finnish electronic pioneer and musician Erkki Kureniemi who has for years documented his daily life in writings, tapes, photographs and other stuff so he can be revived mechanically in the future by scientists - he wants his memories to be the basis of an artificial intelligence.

2. Into Great Silence

A documentary about the most reclusive monastery in the Christian world and the lives of the monks inhabiting it. The results are breath-taking.

3. Cane Toads

A bizarre little film about Australian cane toads (a pest not native to Australia and introduced there by humans) and many people whose lives are intertwined with these animals. Has a lot of black humor, stylistically reminds quite a lot of Errol Morris and Werner Herzog. A more humorous companion for Darwin's Nightmare.

4. The Punk Syndrome

Four Finnish mentally handicapped middle-aged men start recording punk rock and become a success in punk circles and national celebrities.

5. Kumaré

An Indian guy (Vikram Gandhi, the director of the film) starts to perform as a sort of a religious guru and help desperate and sad people. His mission is, in the end, to reveal to these people who he really is and make them realize that the power to help them lies in themselves, not in Gods or gurus. The results are deeply touching, puzzling and surprising.

6. Dom kallar oss mods

A Swedish documentary classic, made in 1968. Follows very closely the lives of two teenage drug addicts and bums and their relationships with their families and friends. Has two sequels about their lives, made in 1979 (A Decent Life) and 1993 (Det sociala arvet).

7. Perverse Preachers, Fascist Fundamentalists and Kristian Kiddie Kooks

A collection of clips from bizarre Christian, hyper-conservative propaganda tv shows for adults and Children, edited together. A very surreal and completely outrageous experience (in a good way).

8. Wisconsin Death Trip

A documentary about the history of a one small American town with lots of bizarre and cruel happenings, filled with crimes, diseases and weird, eccentric people.

9. Gaea Girls

About the both physically and mentally hard and painful training of Japanese female wrestlers. If you don't want to see crying young girls getting kicked in the head by their enraged trainers without a warning, this is not for you.

10. Jesus Christus Erlöser

Klaus Kinski having a mental breakdown during a performance of his Jesus monologues. The audience starts to heckle him, he loses his temper and starts raging and screaming. This goes on for hours.

11. Talhotblond

I... can't say a lot about this without spoiling it. But if you see somewhere a synopsis about this you will understand why this definitely belongs to this list. A documentary about a weird, weird murder and the dangers of social life based solely on Internet.

12. ¡Vivan las Antipodas!

This film follows the lives of people and animals living in the complete opposite places on the planet Earth, hence the name of the film. 8 places which means 4 pairs.
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 13:06
@Lamourderer, you gave me a lot work! It's going to take ages to track down all those movies....

- The Future Is Not What It Used to Be. Not added, there is nothing about it on imdb and it is unknown on Wikipedia
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 13:17
Here's a pretty good, short explanation and details about The Future Is Not What It Used to Be, if you'd like to reconsider: http://icarusfilms.com/new2004/fut.html
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 13:20
@Lamourderer,

If the movie is too obscure, it won't be added sorry, buddy.
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 13:34
@johanlefourbe

Well, it's fine by me, of course, it's your list and all.

I just got confused because films like Rabbit Hash and Johnny Berlin are on the list though. They're pretty obscure films too.
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 13:54
@Lamourderer,

Of course, 95% of the movies on this list are obscure, that's the whole point but I have to draw a line somewhere. My rule is that if there is no information on Imdb or on Wikipedia, I don't add the movie. Do you know how time consuming it is to update this list everytime someone gives a suggestion? I'm not going to surf the whole web to find something about this flick, especially if you drop a list of 12 movies on me...

This flick has been seen by 32 imdb users, there is no synopsis, no review, sorry, I'm not interested...
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 14:20
I think I have a hunch how time consuming it is. We all have our crosses to carry and so on.

I will save a bit of your troubles and tell not to check about Perverse Preachers, Fascist Fundamentalists and Kristian Kiddie Kooks either because you won't find anything about it from wikipedia and not a lot from imdb either.

I'd also kindly recommend adding those rules about wikipedia and imdb to your list description so you wouldn't have to check out so much stuff.

Cheers, mate.
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Jul 31 14:45
@Lamourderer,

- Into Great Silence. Not added, following what I have read about it, it doesn't sound really weird to me. Maybe if I see it, I will change my mind though.

- Cane Toads. Not added,, following what I have read about it, it seems to be above all funny instead of weird. It is difficult to judge it without seeing it.

- The Punk Syndrome. It has been added.

- Kumaré. Not added. It sounds more sad than weird. Again, difficult to know without watching it.

- Dom kallar oss mods. Not added. It seems to be an interesting documentary but I don't see what is so weird about it.

- Perverse Preachers, Fascist Fundamentalists and Kristian Kiddie Kooks. It has been added.

- Wisconsin Death Trip. it has been added

- Gaea Girls. Not added. I couldn't find much information about it. Closed call though on this one.

- Jesus Christus Erlöser. Not added. I couldn't find much information about it. Too bad it really sounds pretty cool.

- Talhotblond. It has been added.

- ¡Vivan las Antipodas!. Not added. It sounds interesting but not really weird.

Budo: The Art of Killing (1979)
Superman of Malegaon (2008)
Eat the Sun (2011)
Posted: 1 year, 7 months ago at Aug 28 7:49
I gotta watch all of these.

And Cane Toads MUST be added. Why can't weird be funny? Many of the docs on here are funny as well as weird. It's Herzog's favorite movie of all time so that says everything.

Here's some info on Jesus Christ Savior:
Back in 1971, Klaus Kinski wanted 'to tell mankind's most exciting story - The story of Jesus Christ'.
But he couldn't. The stage performance of the scandal-ridden actor kept being interrupted
by an audience that did not want a sermon, but a discussion instead.

'Jesus Christ Saviour' shows a tumultuous evening of back and forth insults, the struggle of an actor
to have his say, a theatrical happening in a time critical of authority and the spectacular failure
of an attempt to better the world through literary means.

Making use of all available picture and sound clips from the evening, the documentary creates
an intimate impression of the live experience, a testimony to an extraordinary moment
and an exceptional artist.

And two pics
