![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Having recently watched I Saw the Devil, I was curious to check out another film by the same director. While the film was a completely different tone than Devil and A Tale of Two Sisters it was still an enjoyable ride. The action set pieces were wonderful and it was a fun film to start out the new year. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD I had been hearing a bit of buzz around this film a few times over the last year and figured I would give it a try. While I cannot state that it is a wonderful film or even a great one at that, it still had some bits I really enjoyed. Overall, I felt the joke was bit stale halfway through but I couldn't help but enjoy the last 20 minutes or so. Worth checking out if only for a quick chance to see Benedict Cumberbatch in a small role. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD A film that's been on my radar for quite a while and can I say it did not disappoint. Bergman's style is unmatched and finally seeing the chess game I've heard about for quite some time is a real treat. A great film for cinema fans and continues my love affair with black and white. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Owned DVD I have a love/hate relationship with Stuart Gordon. I love Re-Animator as a film, and I love Stuart's love for all things Lovecraft, but I cannot seem to get into his other films. For being a film made in 1995 it looked rather dated and the normally amazing Jeffery Combs was underused in a rather bland role. Don't waste your time on this clunker spend it rewatching Re-Animator or Gordon's recent Masters of Horror Episodes, Dreams in the Witch House or The Black Cat. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Not sure why on earth it took me this long to watch this film. It was quirky and miles above the level I expected. I had heard it was quite good but it was better than I could ever have imagined. The love story is great and you can't help but smile ear to ear the entire film. A film like this allowed me to notice the beauty of small things in life and how far a great script and wonderful directing can take you. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() Third Viewing Personal Collection DVD Finally got to watch this with the gal and she enjoyed it up until the end much like I do. While I cannot hate the film for the last 20 minutes and I do have respect for what takes place and the unraveling I cannot help but feel that it is rather implausible. Although this time around I was able too see some hints that I had missed the first two times giving it a better feeling in the end due to nods to the end along the way. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD I adore cats because they are adorable. =) That being said this type of flick was right up my alley. I had never even heard of it until I randomly came across it listed somewhere. That being said, it was actually a pretty strong flick with some great characters throughout adding to the fun. It was enjoyable for what it was which was nothing more than a movie about a cat from outer space. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD While not the best film I've seen in a long while certainly not the worst. It had a lot of wonderful ideas going for it when it came to reversing roles and concepts the genre loves to use time and time again. A great little horror flick with enough funny spots throughout. A lot of references through make it a fun little experience. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD I'm a bit new to Woody Allen films. I watched Match Point in my younger years but remember nothing about it so I might as well just say I've only seen Purple Rose of Cairo and this for now. While not a great film I really enjoyed what it was trying to do. Black and white is great to see in modern ways and this was no exception. The cast did a great job including my girl Mia Farrow and great men like John Cusack and John Malkovich. Woody Allen has some great comic timing and I look forward to watching Annie Hall and Manhatten in the near future. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Having heard so many good and bad things about Red State I was willing to give it a try, and it wasn't much. The first 20 minutes or so seemed to have some life but it went downhill from there and never managed to catch my attention again. Far too many things going and on and obvious messages being spouted towards my eardrums. The real saving grace of the film is the performance of Micheal Parks he steals the show every second he's on screen, I just wish it was in something a lot better than this. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() No Idea On The Viewing Personal Collection DVD I really needed something to wash that horrible taste of Red State out of my mouth and mind so I turned to an old friend I hadn't seen in years. Sadly...it didn't hold up too well. The dialogue is oh so dated and I couldn't help but feel that my nerd fanboy idol Johnny 5 deserves better. I understand that he needed a way to be brought to life on the silver screen but couldn't they have tried a little harder, I mean christ Steve Gunntenberg...really? My ultimate guilty pleasure film is Short Circuit 2 and I find it strange that I can't muster much love for this first outing. Meh. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() Third Viewing I Believe Personal Collection DVD I adore the Ramones more than I can ever explain so watching a film with them involved is a dream come true. It's quite cheesy but that's the beauty of it, it has it's charms and that keeps the viewer entertained and the soundtrack is top notch. A worthy watch along with the Ramones albums. Any fan of the band should appreciate the film for it's quirky humor and all out fun atmosphere. If you like the Ramones this for you, but if you love Roger Corman and low budget films that are barrels of fun then watch this you won't regret it for a second. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Had merely heard about this film in passing and figured I would give it a try. After checking it out from the library twice and not watching due to being far too busy, I made it my duty to give it a watch. It ranks very high up for me at least in it's genre and sets the bar a lot higher. The story is all kinds of bizarre but all kinds of awesome. You cannot help but get hooked on what is going on and be rather impressed by the effects and the general fun to be had. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD I gotta flat out admit this flick pissed me off beyond belief. The first 15 or so minutes had me by the balls and took me on this visual mind trip of angles and other shenanigans until I thought I would pass out from exhaustion. But then like a leaf floating past the window the greatness disappeared only to return in the last ten minutes when it was too late. I don't doubt the directors involved have talent that was shown to me by the tense opening, but where on earth did that go? Why change up the pace to the point of inducing an early sleep? I lost interest quick and realized how great this could have been. The only reason I rate it so high is due to the impressive visuals that held it up right for the rest of the film. Worth a shot if you love visuals that scream homage to great directors and overall creativity but if you're looking for story worth drooling over you sure as hell won't find it here. ![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Having been a film I've been wanting to see for quite a while and never actually getting around to it until now, it might my expectations and nothing more. It is not a bad film by any means, overall I rather enjoyed it, but it just had something stopping it from being great. It was a beautiful film to look at and Hanks does a great job among with the rest of the cast. Definitely worth a look for noir fans. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD A very insightful documentary about a great author with some great interviews throughout from the likes of Neil Gaiman, John Carpenter, and Del Toro, whom are all great fans of his work. Nice to learn a few things about his life I wasn't already aware of. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Borrow From A Friend's Personal Collection I love Mr.Campbell and try my best to see almost everything he takes part in. While this not a horrible effort compared to say My Name is Bruce it wasn't entirely memorable. Though it was nice to see some Evil Dead nods and seeing Mr. Campbell play goofy is always a sight to see. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Netflix Streaming My first film over Netflix and it was worth a watch. While I didn't find it groundbreaking or anything it was an interesting look inside the food industry. I tend not to like films of this manner because I've found that many are outraged when this type of behavior comes to light, and I am not really suprised by it I suppose. It's a business and business is not always the nicest in terms of kindness and what just seems right. It's a hard subject matter to swallow..no pun intended and I would rather not think into it too much or I will just get annoyed by it. It happens and it's avoidable until someone else starts doing it nuff said. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Not my favorite Coen film, but certainly not a bad film by anyone's standards. Overall, I found it a rather strange watch ( In a good way) but I tend to like the goofy side of the Coen's a bit more so it wasn't entirely up my alley, but it's a nice high note for the brothers and shouldn't be missed for anyone that loves their filmography. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
First Viewing Netflix Streaming I decided to use the title card simply because the word Scarecrows is a hell of a lot scarier than this entire film. Personally, scarecrows scare the hell out of me and while this movie made me uncomfortable due to it's subject matter I couldn't past how horrible of a film it really was. The premise is beyond horrible and the acting is bottom notch. I bet they walked into a Denny's yelled wanna be in a movie? Hands went up, and alas this film was made. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
First Viewing
Netflix Streaming ![]() Gene Wilder is the man, but that alone couldn't save this film. It had it's comic moments that held up rather well but other than that it's a real forgetablefest. I didn't remember much when it was done and I'm not sad about that. Gene's presence held this wreck together and when he was absent it crumbled. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD Really enjoyed the film until the ending then felt a little less excited about my enthusiasm before hand. It was a film that caused me a great deal of pain mentally and it had it's cringe worthy moments. The two leads do a wonderful job and this film just goes to show the talent of Mr. Fassbender. I look forward to see him a lot more in the future. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing For a few minutes I was sitting and thinking how ridiculously self aware this film was compared to the first. They both are borderline insane at times, but this sequel didn't know how to leave well enough alone. It would take a wonderful idea and run with it for far too long. I loved seeing Bruce Campbell pop up and that segment worked for me because it didn't stay too long, but the medieval section just would not end. I'm not saying it's not worth checking out because it certainly is I just wish it knew when something was getting stale. The last 20 minutes are a hell of a lot of fun though much like the first film. PS. Be sure to watch the credits they have a thrilling rap song for your enjoyment. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Rented Library DVD A very insightful doc on slasher films. I watched a lot more in my teenage years and it reminded me I need to get back to that. I enjoyed a lot of the interviews and any horror fan will love it. Beware though as it enjoyed showing spoilers from Slasher Films a bit more than I would have liked, for the films I hadn't actually seen no less. Hootsaidtheowl's rating:
![]() First Viewing Not for me, as simple as that. I did not hate it by any means, but I would never watch it again. I had some great imagery, my favorite being the picture above with the sharks, but I didn't much care for anything else. It was far too long and I couldn't help but want to do other things while watching it. You may enjoy it and I will never have an issue with that. People may like what they like but I couldn't help but feel it was nothing more than something pretty with nothing between. It was an Oreo with two beautiful cookies and no cream filling. I went through a minor Bergman kick last year, but didn't sit down with The Seventh Seal. I ought to correct that one of these days...
Of Stuart Gordon's stuff I also love his Masters of Horror eps & Re-Animator so I'll take your advice & avoid Castle Freak. If you haven't seen his Pit & Pendulum adaptation you should give it a look.
Great pacing so far, one movie a day that's really impressive even if you end up skipping a few days!
I've never watched Dracula Dead & Loving It due to all the negative feedback I've seen/heard over the years (despite my love for the majority of Mel Brooks's films), so your rating will definitely encourage me to continue avoiding it.
Also glad to see Paranorman will be worth watching whenever I get out to see it. Been looking forward to it since I first heard about it.
Awesome that you finally watched Gojira and Wait Until Dark. Both excellent films.
