2337 8.2 8.41. Oldboy (2003)
Overall, it was a good movie even if it was completely predictable and borrowed the concept from The Count of Monte Cristo. I loved some of the camera angles and visual imagery.
1289 7.5 7.82. Scent of a Woman (1992)
Once again, Pacino does a fantastic job. He steals the show in this heartwarming movie with real truths.
806 8.1 8.23. A Trip to the Moon (1902)
This movie was fantastic even if it was only about 10 minutes long. I was impressed by the technological aspects of it, such as the disappearing martians and fade-outs.
571 7.9 84. Duck Soup (1933)
Slapstick routines and funny dialogue abounds, and I actually found myself being entertained even though this kind of comedy isn't normally my thing.
1236 7.5 7.85. Dark City (1998)
Although it has fantastic atmosphere and a decent plot, I was surprised at the fairly high level of cheesiness (both in acting and dialogue).
4119 8.1 8.66. Memento (2000)
I loved this movie even more the second time around.
2987 8.1 8.67. Apocalypse Now (1979)
I can see why many would consider it one of the greatest movies, but I personally don't like it. It's weird that I was so bored watching this considering I love the novel.
3392 7.7 8.18. 12 Monkeys (1995)
Another virus-wipes-out-everyone dystopian tale. It was good, but had a very predictable ending.
4846 8.2 8.49. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Uh...what? I'm not exactly sure what kind of story Kubrick was attempting to tell here, but the movie tried way too hard to make Alex sympathetic - which is ridiculous.
1700 7.9 8.210. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
This movie is still cute the second time around. Even though it abounds with cliches and bad dialogue, I can forgive the faults because of its huge amount of charm.
2626 7.8 8.211. Fargo (1996)
I have to admit, I was mildly entertained. Black comedies are hard to do successfully, and this does a great job.
504 7.4 7.612. Following (1998)
This was a nice little neo-noir film that sets up the plot, explains the characters' motives, and wraps up all the loose threads within an hour.
3171 8 8.413. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
This film hasn't aged a bit, and the special effects still look spectacular. Its story is told more through cinematography than dialogue, and the most brilliant sequences were the space ships floating around to Strauss's music. The ending literally left me speechless, and a movie has never done that to me before.
This is the best sci-fi film I have ever seen.
1429 6.9 7.414. The Bucket List (2007)
It was a fairly predicable "feel good / sad" movie, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. As always, Nicholson and Freeman do a great job.
1136 7.2 7.615. First Blood (1982)
Heh, I might have enjoyed this movie a bit more if I was an adolescent male. A guilty pleasure movie, to be sure.
912 8.4 8.416. Rashomon (1950)
Another fantastic Kurosawa movie. This crime drama leaves it up to the viewer to decide who is telling the truth. Can any man be trusted?
2197 6.7 7.117. Chicago (2002)
This is a pretty decent screen adaptation of the famous musical, but I don't think it deserved a best picture Oscar.
3200 7.7 818. Shutter Island (2010)
To be honest, the plot of this psychological thriller was a bit weak and cliche, but the movie overall was fantastic due to DiCaprio's acting and Scorsese's direction.
1466 6.9 7.419. Poltergeist (1982)
It kinda feels like a big budget Spielberg-directed horror movie from the 80's. Which is pretty much exactly what it is.
2113 8 8.120. The King's Speech (2010)
Firth left me s-s-speechless.
57 7.5 7.321. African Cats (2011)
This documentary was actually pretty good. It had some great footage of African scenery and animals.
763 6.9 6.922. Water for Elephants (2011)
Romantic dramas are a dime a dozen these days, but this movie had a rather original plot. In my mind, that puts this movie slightly above the average fare.
822 7.1 7.723. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
A really great family drama. There needs to be more movies like this.
5238 8.1 8.724. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
In many ways, this film lives up to the hype. There are some things left unexplained in the plot, but this problem is minor in light of the fact that everything else is done so well.
1390 7.5 7.825. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
This is one of those rare movies that does the novel justice. I think the plot is overrated, but the main theme of the movie (violence against women) is portrayed throughout in interesting ways.
1459 6.3 6.426. Salt (2010)
I was expecting average action / thriller fare, complete with government conspiracies, but what I saw was actually a little better than average.
240 7.3 7.827. Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)
Whoever says "cartoons" are only for kids has been living under a rock the past several decades. This movie has good animation and action sequences as well as a narrative script that is better than most non-animated movies.
1579 7.1 7.528. The Fly (1986)
A decent sci-fi horror film with fantastic special effects. Although CGI can look very nice, this film was all the more believable for using well-made costume and makeup effects.
4197 8.2 8.429. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Leave it up to Quentin Tarantino to make a movie interesting by mere dialogue alone. I'm still not a huge QT fan, but I liked this more than all of his other movies except Pulp Fiction.
3372 7.9 8.230. The Big Lebowski (1998)
Even though I'm not a part of the movie's target audience, I still found it quite funny and original. It's a shame it doesn't have a real plot, but that's kinda the point, isn't it?
974 5.7 5.831. Green Lantern (2011)
Not good, but not bad. A fun way to pass a couple of hours even though it had a cliche plot and cheesy dialogue.
1706 6.6 7.232. Insomnia (2002)
A different kind of detective thriller. Great acting all around.
991 7.7 833. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
The cover art isn't lying when it says it's the funniest rock movie ever made. Fans of rock n' roll from the 60s through the 80s would love this, and also fans of mockumentaries. Although this spoof movie isn't for everyone, for those who 'get' it, it's great.
1308 6.9 7.134. Super 8 (2011)
I loved this. Those who don't like the last act were probably expecting this to be an epic sci-fi alien movie. Instead, it's an homage to film-making and a family drama with some sci-fi on the side.
1159 6.8 735. Red (2010)
The plot for this movie is about as threadbare as they come, but I enjoyed watching it due to some spectacular action sequences and some genuine attempts at comedy.
2577 7.8 8.536. Aliens (1986)
Consider my mind blown. This movie surpassed the original in every way possible. What surprised me more than anything was the fact that all the major players here were female - Ripley, Newt, and the alien hive mother all have an epic showdown at the end. Brilliant!
2197 6.9 7.237. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
What were they smoking when they made this?!
2270 7.5 7.738. The Machinist (2004)
This wasn't so much an interesting psychological drama as it was a chance for Christian Bale to show his dedication to acting. Even with a cliche plot, the movie works due to the powerful visual imagery - both in the setting and in Bale's skeletal form.
759 7.8 7.839. The Fall (2006)
The Fall impressed me even more the second time around. You can tell that the director had a specific vision in mind when he created it, and he didn't stop until he achieved this vision.
227 6.9 6.840. Exam (2009)
Not bad for an indie psychological thriller. The setting and general atmosphere reminded me a lot of 12 Angry Men. Not a lot of movie makers have the guts to make a movie like this, and I applaud them for trying.
72 7.2 6.741. A Bucket of Blood (1959)
This black comedy still holds up well today, especially because it makes fun of beatnik society and because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Yep, there are still people who think like that today.
3383 8 8.142. Black Swan (2010)
Natalie Portman continues to amaze me, and this film took me in unexpected directions emotionally. I wasn't even quite sure what to make of it when it ended, but I know it'll be worth a rewatch years later.
244 8.3 7.843. Love Exposure (2008)
Love Exposure is the strangest movie I've ever seen, and that's saying something. This four hour epic can be described as a drama / comedy / romance / psychological / philosophical piece. It also involves betrayal, religious symbolism, and plenty of panty shots.
1366 7.2 7.544. Source Code (2011)
You know, this was actually pretty good. Rather than focus on how some sci-fi gadget works, this movies cuts right to the chase and shows the ramifications of such technology.
115 5.5 5.845. Suspect Zero (2004)
This wasn't terrible, but it was extremely cliche for a serial killer movie. The movie revolved around a rather unbelievable psychic ability, which seemed oddly out of place when it was trying so hard to be realistic.
5987 7.7 8.246. V for Vendetta (2005)
Man, I had almost forgotten how awesome this movie is.
2458 7.9 8.147. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
Rewatched 7/15/11 (again!)
Oh how I cried at Snape's flashback! What an epic way to end an epic series. Standout performances from the whole cast can be seen here, especially Alan Rickman.
3380 7.7 8.348. Die Hard (1988)
For an action thriller, this was really good! It had a predictable ending, but most of the fun was in getting to that point in the first place.
417 8.5 8.249. Tokyo Story (1953)
What more can I say about this masterpiece that hasn't already been said? This drama is as relevant today as it ever was... in any country.
179 7.8 7.850. The Man from Nowhere (2010)
I thoroughly enjoyed this action thriller from Korea. I've officially decided that Korean genre films are usually superior to Hollywood ones in just about every way possible.
