1. Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

What I dig about it:

✔ Fantastic atmosphere. Like all Tim Burton movies, this movie is wonderfully surreal.

✔ Great writing, with some great, memorable dialogue.

✔ Fantastic adventure. Every kid should see this at least once. It's essentially about a kid, his favourite bike, and the adventure he goes on to retrieve it, when it's stolen. Except the "kid" is a man-child. Weird, yes, but somehow it works (at least for me).

2. Big Meat Eater (1982)

People who added this item 308  Average listal rating (179 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 6.8
3. Repo Man (1984)

What I dig about it:

✔ Great writing.

✔ Great soundtrack.

✔ Punk as f---, without overdoing it. A lot of punk rock inspired movies, about punks, like to throw "punk" in your face. This movie seems to respect the subculture a bit more.

✔ Gritty, just how I like it.

Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 12  Average listal rating (3 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating 5.9
4. Rituals (1977)

What I dig about it:

✔ Good writing.

✔ Good suspense, and atmosphere.

✔ Goofy yellow hats.

Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 50  Average listal rating (21 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 6.6
5. Road Games (1981)

What I dig about it:

✔ Very Hitchcockian. Think Rear Window, except taking place in a moving semi truck.

✔ Mixes classic Hitchcockian styles/themes with touches of the 80's slasher craze, that Hitchcock is oft credited for grandfathering, with Psycho.

✔ Jamie Lee Curtis. Another connection to Hitchcock (Curtis is the daughter of Janet Leigh, who played Marion in Psycho), as well as the slasher subgenre (Curtis was in Halloween, as well as a few other 80s slashers).
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 72  Average listal rating (23 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 6.8
6. Suburbia (1983)

What I dig about it:

✔ Properly punk. Feels like the real deal, which is helped along by the sort of "docu-drama" style of it, and the fact that the "actors" were "real" punks, and not actors.

✔ Good writing.

✔ Decent, "true-to-life" drama, even if the acting is sub-par.

✔ Great soundtrack.

✔ Suburbia in turmoil. It's always good to peer under the nice glossy top coat of suburban life.
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 77  Average listal rating (39 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 6.1
7. Parents (1989)

What I dig about it:

► Surreal atmosphere. I am a sucker for movies with a surreal atmosphere, and this movie definitely has that.

► Some good cinematography.

► Great performances from the children - especially considering they are "unknowns". The boy in particular. Surprised he didn't go on to do more.
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 20  Average listal rating (7 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating
8. Mondo Trasho (1969)

What I dig about it:

✔ An interesting experiment in film/sound editing, and could even be considered "artistic" - depending on who you ask. There is almost no dialog, but Waters has used snippets of pop music, and sound to sort of create the "mood" for each scene. Pretty cool.

✔ Trashy, as the title, and director suggests.
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 180  Average listal rating (112 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating 6.7
9. UHF (1989)

What I dig about it:

✔ Awesome movie spoofs and skits.

✔ Good writing overall.

✔ Weird Al.

✔ Michael Richards.

Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 573  Average listal rating (280 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 6.2
10. Gummo (1997)

What I dig about it:

✔ Bizarre / seemingly nonsensical. Surreal at times.

✔ Trashy / gritty.

✔ Odd, almost poetic narration, and imagery.

✔ Shot documentary style, lending some realism to the absurd situations and characters. To be honest, I'm not even sure they are "characters". They could all very well be real people, just being themselves. Some of them certainly seemed pretty genuine.
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 1  Average listal rating (1 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 5.7
11. The Lunatic (1991)
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 51  Average listal rating (33 ratings) 5.2  IMDB Rating 4.4
12. Transylvania 6-5000 (1985)

What I dig about it:

✔ Michael Richards. He is great in this, if you ask me. Easily my favourite character. The scene with the doll is sidesplittingly hilarious to me.

✔ Overall fairly funny. Does have a few misses, but I think there are more hits than misses.

✔ Vaguely has the feel of a Mel Brooks film, which isn't surprising, considering it's written & directed by Rudy De Luca, who has acted in, and written at least a few Mel Brooks films.
Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 261  Average listal rating (183 ratings) 5.4  IMDB Rating 5.8
13. Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)

What I dig about it:

✔ Contrary to most people's opinions, I think Chevy Chase made a pretty good Invisible Man.

✔ Narration. I am a sucker for narration. I really don't know why.

✔ Some damn good effects for the time.

✔ Overall pretty entertaining, like pretty much all of John Carpenter's films.

Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 42  Average listal rating (17 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 6.1
14. Just Before Dawn (1981)

What I dig about it:

✔ Awesomely eerie whistling/synth theme.

Grisly Atoms's rating:

People who added this item 158  Average listal rating (104 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating 5.9
15. My Bloody Valentine (1981)
Grisly Atoms's rating:

A list of some movies that I think are underrated. Some more underrated than others.

I should note that I am basing this list on the ratings on IMDb, as it's one of the most used movie sites around (Rotten Tomatoes is used more), with a public rating system. So, in other words, these are all movies that I think should have a higher rating on IMDb.

I may attempt to explain what I like about each movie at some point. I won't promise anything though.

Our ratings are mostly close on the ones we've both seen, so I guess these are underrated for me too! Nice to see Drop Dead Fred on here haha. About half these I haven't seen, so maybe I'll give some of them a look.

Yes, I noticed that too. I have to give some of the movies on your underrated list a watch as well. Thanks!

Nice to see "Parents" and "Meet the Applegates" two films that very few people I know have watched :)

If I had to choose a 'most under-rated horror film from the 70's' it would definitely be The Sentinel. Good job!

Great list dude! But if you could add bullet points to each flick, THIS LIST WOULD RULE THE FUCKING PLANET!!!

I have only seen 5 of these. Nice list though!

Heh, I wouldn't call them classics but they do have their place in the history of cinema.
