"How to get an Hourglass Figure"
(the ORIGINAL most widely googled article now expanded only on Super Amanda blogger)

The "measurements" issued by PR people are almost always fake which is why few are included here. The definition of what an hourglass figure is has changed over the years so to be clear, this list focuses on the classic hourglass shape of the late 1940s and early 1950s. It starts with women from that era to women who today still bring to mind this same very figure. Whether they were hourglasses, athletic, boyish, petite, heavy or very buxom, all women of the 40s and 50s had very defined waists. One need only glance at any old photo of the public pools or beaches. Clothing was better constructed and overall people were smaller than today. So if you do not see your favourite star on here it is not because the author does not think they are curvy or tiny waisted, this is simply my own interpretation of the classic Hourglass figure. This list should not be seen as a guide to "what the best body is" or how you should look. These are strictly my own opinions and I can't stress enough how I think ALL female body types are wonderful.

I have an almost 5'10 hourglass figure of myself, I wrote one of the most widely Googled articles on the HGF and I''m at the end on this mostly chronological list. I've found far too much misrepresentation of what an hourglass figure is by the media, fashion magazines, many PR agencies and even the celebs and models themselves. Furthermore, most fashion writers or designers who write about or design clothing for an hourglass figure don't have one of their own. This is evident in how little decent reproduction vintage clothing exists despite a boom in recent years unless bespoke. Most of what I've seen is cut incorrectly through the torso with the waist usually either too high, too wide or too low. Often in structured pieces there is also not enough delineation and/or length between the bust, ribcage and waist. The natural, nipped in waist in fashions for all body types is now mostly gone.

This list is comprised of women who look literally like an hourglass and do not need heavy corsets and photo shop to create this natural effect. Virtually all these photos show the form unencumbered by computer retouching and photo shop. Some subtle lighting was used in many old school photographs of hourglass bombshells but as you can see, unlike almost all magazine/paparazzi/swimsuit photo today, the photographer did not create what is not there and NOTHING was resized. These HG figures range in height, weight, frame and proportion; some are athletic dancers or soft and very, very busty and voluptuous. Some are more petite, small busted and fine boned, some shorter and stockier while others are tall and thin or tall and fuller figured or/and Amazonian while other women on the list have literally PERFECTLY symmetrical figures.

The often discussed subject of how many of these woman would "not be hired today in a skinny hard body obsessed media" is simply false; the media could only dream of women like the first portion of the list reappearing and indeed many are constantly imitated by Madison Ave in bad photo shoots by cultural illiterates like Steven Meisel.

Finally, many feel an hourglass figure is only really possible with a corset-not true at all. Natural hourglass figures simply do not gain or store much weight in the upper torso or waist, we carry it in either the hips, legs, shoulders and/or arms. Our weight and breast size can fluctuate due to child birth, age etc but we nearly always have hips and busts that are about 9 to 12 inches or so than our waist when measured at the fullest point of both the bust and the hips. Cup and breast size can vary. The hourglass figure is associated with higher fertility rates for obvious reasons but it is a trickier shape to get back after childbirth for some.

thanks for the reply and the schooling. i see what you mean, especially the high waisted thing! :)
Posted: 8 years, 9 months ago at Jan 5 9:28
Prelude already nailed this one in a far more scientific way - by using measurements!
Posted: 8 years, 9 months ago at Jan 5 15:23
"Measurements?" "science?" you're kidding me? Those "measurements" that PR people issue are about as natural and real as a blue skittle. I helped prelude with a good portion of the list if you read the comments. This is much more concise and there are no implants or extreme corsets and almost no photoshop.

SuperAmanda! I don't even know what to say! My friend brought your list to my attention and I am simply stunned! Thank you SOOOOO much for including me on this amazing list, I am humbled beyond words. To be listed among the women that I have always idolized brings a tear to my eye! Here is a big huge internet HUG for you! Actually, I will message you privately, as I would love to send you a signed 8X10!

I´m will recomend you also a couple of argentine hourglasses,
the erotic actress Isabel "Coca" Sarli
And the former model Karina Mazzoco
If you like them, write me back ;)
Posted: 8 years, 8 months ago at Jan 23 2:09
OF COURSE! ISABEL SARLI! One of dearest fellow film buff friends actually gave me one of her dvds and I must have just have forgotten my brain cells temporarily by not including her. Karina is awesome but I would put her on the higher waisted, buxom list with Eva Amurri and Maria Grazia Cucinotta. cheers again mate!

You´re welcome again, and thanks for voting in my list of argentine women. You could check some of the ladies there.
Although they´re not worldly famous, i think emilia attias and carla conte are hourglasses. But i couldn´t find a picture of emilia that shows those sexy curves since she now works in tv show for kids and teenagers

Hello!!! I would like to know wich body shape I have...:))My measurements are 36C- 29-39.... My shoulders are the same width as hips, but they are straight... My waist is long, but looks smaller than you would think when u see it is 29 inches.... I have big thigs, but my butt isn't that big..... So, pls help me :))))
Posted: 8 years, 8 months ago at Jan 28 15:00
Hi Lisa, any pictures?
Posted: 8 years, 8 months ago at Jan 29 14:05
Temporaly, I'm not able to send u a pic... My shape is something like Kate Winslets...... I have long waist as she has and relation between her waist and hips doesn't look that dramatic like hourglasses have.. Her butt isn't that big like hourglass shaped women have... In some articles it is said that she is apple shaped, in some she is a pear and many people say that she is hourglass...so I'm a little bit confused :)))
Posted: 8 years, 8 months ago at Jan 29 15:11
I can't tell without a photo.

"In some articles...so I'm a little bit confused :)))"

The media lies about what woman's shapes nearly all the time so I would start ignoring them and read the independent opinions of those who are not being paid to sell you something. :)

I was wondering how I might contact you for more information about hourglass figures :)

Hi, you can email me through listal. Just go to message on my profile. Thanks
Posted: 8 years, 5 months ago at May 18 18:28
just wondered what ur measurements are superAmanda?
Posted: 8 years, 5 months ago at May 18 21:21
In the above photo I was 38(34EE bra)-26.5-38 which was when I was doing hardcore pilates so my waist was proportionately bigger and I weighed about 150 ish. You can see the waist muscle sticking out on the left side which is why I stopped core workouts; I was not ok with my oblique muscles protruding even slightly.

In most of my videos and pics online I'm (42.5)34FF bra-28-40 and 165. In my early 20's before I filled out and grew to my current height of almost 5'10 I was 37(34D+ bra)-22-37 and 5'8.5 which was awesome because I could wear almost anything and my waist was crazy tiny.

Hi Amanda!

Kudos, this list is excellent, along with your other lists, my favorite being the list of Most overrated bodies. My sentiments exactly, it felt very liberating to read that I am not alone with my views, especially regarding Katy Perry. As a feminist myself though, I have to ask why you decided to include Kim Kardashian in this list alongside these naturally drop dead gorgeous, talented, articulate and genuine women... it comes off a tad hypocritical and like you are working against your own cause. You yourself wrote the following in the comments when Harumi Namoto was suggested: "Harumi is far too top heavy plus I believe in having lists that are porn free/manga free. I'm not anti-porn, I just would never put porn stars in the same league as the women on this list who have made it on not just looks but talent, personality, charm and not giving away "the store." Porn stars are not celebrities and models to me. I think they belong on hard drives not in the mainstream. Mystery is where it's at. "

Kim Kardashian is Paris Hilton's ex-bff whose claim to fame is a "leaked" sex tape, in which she actually goes as far to receive a golden shower. Classy lady :] Not to mention that her entire family is addicted to plastic surgery, her included( just of course she is the only one who hasn't admitted it yet, but it's just so noticeable, especially now that she is going overboard with the facial surgeries).. on Keeping up with the Kardashians( early episodes) I believe there was a discussion about her breast implants, and of course plenty of rumours regarding liposuction and butt implants. Yes I have seen the picture she posted of herself as a youngin, and I don't deny that she had breasts to begin with, but hey, many everyday women with perfectly sized breasts still decide to go under the knife, and when it is encouraged by your entire family whose sole purpose in life is chasing fame no matter the cost, why would you be the exception? Since you omitted other contenders from the list due to plastic surgery, corsetting, porn, etc and generally reading your views on mass media and pop culture, I really feel she should be removed. And in my opinion, even with her surgeries, to my eye, she is still closer to being pear-shaped, than hourglass. Other than this, awesome job on the lists, and kudos, you have amazing curves, I'm sure your husband is a happy man :)
Posted: 8 years, 4 months ago at May 26 14:05
I so agree with you. I struggled with that had her on the first incarnation of the list and removed her and then put her back in. Yeah, you're right she essentially is a porn star. Going to delete now!

Good call sister!

sorry for another question .next month i will be joining college.amd i m a failure in choosing a right bra for myself.if i choose cotton innerwear it will make my figure edgy with an unnatural designed curve,it will have bulges from side and if i choose a soft materialised bra it wud be useless after a month or two .it gives me a saggy appearance.what sud i wear to enhance my figure.i live in india where salwar suits are also common, its my favourite outfit ,after that i prefer tops and jeans...by mistake i got a low rise jeans in gift.i have already thrown another of that type because my sweetheart(him) disliked me showing my back whenver i bend especially with small shirt or top if i wore.they only have disadvantages.but u only give idea for the variety i can wear for my college.also what a corset can do for me.i have zero knowledge about innerwear or corset...help needed for these .......thankful to u amanda for this great list

Hi Ekta: Thanks so much for your kind notes and have no fear! You seem to have nothing to worry about. You are the best age and the best time in life to pretty much shape you body anyway you choose. It does not look or sound like you are high waisted, especially with that hip measurement even if you are don't worry about as you are in great shape.

Give me some time and I'll happily answer all your questions, best I can!

Wow, my mum and grandma were curvy like that...I am 37 at the shoulders 27 or 26 at the waist, depending on the time of day and 37 at the hips, if i gain weight 39...what is that considered? My mum makes me feel bad because she says I don't have a nice body like hers.

oh, can I recommend somone for you list? aisha tyler she is really curvy
Posted: 8 years, 3 months ago at Jun 30 3:57
I like both your list and the one done by Prelude. I give you an extra point though, for including Vampira. You should probably include her real name, though: Maila Nurmi. Her story is quite fascinating; she recently passed away in 2008. In her prime, she was 38-17-36. Now THAT'S an hourglass figure! Check out other photos on her Facebook fan page, at: [Link removed - login to see]

Well Super Amanda, you now being the Internet Queen of HGFs: Is this an hgf? 34B(36?)-26-35. I think the waist might be too high. What do you think?

Also, any word on if Sofia Vergara has had implants? When she was on a Spanish TV show in the 90s, Control, it seems like her chest was a lot smaller. Could it have naturally grown drastically from then and now?
Posted: 8 years, 1 month ago at Aug 23 13:27
Hey, just to let you know, I'm in the middle of updating my Queens of Burlesque list at the moment and I'm adding references to this one in the related lists sections. ;)

Hi Angie, regarding personal photos and questions, can you please email me privately? I'm trying to keep track of the people I give HGF advice to for a project I'm working on.Thanks

As for Vergara? No she's 100% natural. Your bust can get bigger as time goes by, with children, weight etc. Mine definitely has!
Posted: 8 years, 1 month ago at Sep 1 3:59
Hey love the list this was very helpful. I'm a little confused though, you say that same size hips and bust with little waist makes an hourglass, but then that small chested women aren't hourglassed. I'm not busty but my hips and chest are both 34 with my waist 24 and I'm 5'5 115 (yup, im aware the measurements sound generic/fake hahaha). Why would a b cup disqualify you, im pretty sure even if you are skinny and so have smaller breasts you can be an hourglass? Or am I misunderstanding something :)? Since you don't seem to mind I'll try and get a decent pic of myself and email it to you so you can see what I mean. Thanks!

PS: I agree, I liked your list better than that guys, he had some top heavy and fake/altered women in there for sure.

Also, one of us should start a clothing line with smaller waisted jeans that we can fit over our hips and butts! Haha. Seriously, its even harder when your in a size one, they figure who could possible have more than a stick figure at that size...
Posted: 8 years, 1 month ago at Sep 1 5:00
Hi Stacy M: Feel free to message me. If you are referring to a commenter who sent her measurements but no pics and I asked me to guess, I should be clear that yes, having small breasts does NOT at all in anyway disqualify you from having an hourglass figure.

Bardot, Scar Joh, Ava Gardner, Joan Collins, Dorothy Dandridge and yes, even Marilyn Monroe are all woman who are somewhere between a B and C and who more than qualify are smaller than the current average which is about a 32/34/36D (new sizing, NOT old school). You have great measurements and agreed just beacuse an hourglass is associated with a full bosom in pop culture terms does NOT automatically mean everyone who is an hourglass has to be busty. Good point! Cheers!

Christina Hendricks is one of my new obsessions. I watch Mad Men really to see her clothes and, ha, how she fills them out so fabulously. Anyway, she was selling one of her dresses from Mad Men on eBay and her measurements for the dress are 39-30-39. I guess that goes to show you that measurements don't always mean everything. I just thought I would share this tidbit of news with you since I know you adore hourglass figures. I'll look for the link again to and post it.
Posted: 8 years, 1 month ago at Sep 2 3:51
Thanks! I agree she is the sexist woman in the world, as much for her humility and class as her unrivalled body.

Posted: 8 years, 1 month ago at Sep 2 19:43

Ah, here it is. But yes isn't that surprising. I have just about the same measurements but I am 3 inches shorter, and not nearly shaped the way she is. Ha, I wish I had money to completely waste so I could buy the dress and see what it looks liks. I always liked that plum purple colored dress with the like ruffle ties in the front if you recall.

Here is one that's not a prominent actress. She is all natural too. Sadie Marquardt is a bellydancer.

Is the young Kathleen Battle (opera singer) an hourglass? I once saw a video of her in youtube on a recital wearing a pink gown and to me she looks kinda hourglassy. What about Melyssa Ford? Karina Jelinek (Mexican model)? Nicole Neumann (Argentinian model - they say she has the perfect measurements of 90-60-90)?

Btw are ALL kinds of dance good for hourglass figure? Regarding my previous questions, how does ballet help to achieve hourglass figures? Because to me, most ballerinas are column? As a matter of fact, I thought that professional ballerinas must be skinny enough so they can dance/move more easily.. just like models should be skinny enough so they can be a perfect human mannequin that shows the clothes to its best advantage.

Another question, why should women who want to achieve hourglass figures limit swimming? Swimming is a cardio exercise, right? I thought that all kinds of cardio workout is good for you whatever type/shape your body is.
Posted: 7 years, 11 months ago at Nov 17 3:32
I have to disagree about swimming, and I wrote LIMIT not omit. It builds the arms. If you are hourglass you do not want to build your arms nor square off at the waist and shoulders which is a consistent look with all female swimmers.

Remember the guidelines in my article are for those who want to perfect the hourglass they already have or who want to make a more linear or rocket shape body look closer to an hourglass. If you are an HRG and swimming is working for you then by all means don't give it up.

Belly dancing is of course great as is Ballrooom. Ballet dancers all vary as all dancers do ( the best hourglass figure I've ever seen is classically trained ballerina, though she is a rare beauty on off the stage) but my point was NOT to call all of them hourglasses, my point was that it is a great way to get in shape if you have an hourglass -not to become a ballerina which is like being an athlete-but to compliment your current cardio, waist sculpting and weight regimen

The majority of the ballet exercises strengthen inner thighs, quads and arms without building. Four hours of ballet a week will sculpt an hourglass figure much better than swimming or kick boxing- guaranteed. There is a lot of waist work and a lot of elongation work for natural grace and lengthening. Women really see their body make amazing changes and i know many pus size woman who take it can even teach. The stringent demands on the weight loss do not exist unless you are at a company. that is not what I'm suggesting at all.

Not all cardio is created equal. If someone is going to invest hours of time a week then you should no what your doing and which type of muscle specific training you are putting your body through. The stair master built up many woman's quads and calves as did Step aerobics which is why both are no longer popular.

I have pics but I have to have them scanned and then edited for content as most are nudes so they'll go on my website eventually. Yes, dancing for exercise, even daily, is NOT the same as dancing as a professional. Professional dancing is a whole other world on an athletic level.

Betty Weider has been known to many of us Pinup aficionados and for her era and in/throughout the world of fitness she has always been very famous. The movies are not for everyone, even if you have a flawless body. She dedicated her life to fitness and strength training along with her husband Joe who changed the face of fitness. With only a few free weights and a healthy diet ANYONE can resculpt the exact body they want. It's funny how many gadgets and pills people thing they need when it is so simple!

June Wilkinson,

Irish McCalla,

Meg Myles

and Diane Webber:

are not as famous today as Bettie Page though should be as their physiques are still unrivalled. Page had that black hair, bangs and unlike the others, she did very explicit films and photography plus she showed both sides (good girl wholesome AND hardcore bondage. SnM at that point was 100% underground so as fetish has moved into the mainstream so did Page. It is amazing though, she has the smallest bust of the pinup queens and is not a blond but she is almost as well known as Monroe now and she single handily defines the term pinup along with Varga. Like Monroe she new how to maximize a smaller bust and use her tiny waist to work the camera and give the impression of being mega busty.
I also think with the new emphasis on the booty which started with Beyonce and JLo, Page with her fantastic hips to waist ratio and backside seems more modern as well. It never ceases to amaze me how many terrible imitators are out there pretending and ripping her off. Page did not need a corset either-that was her true figure. Without a corset and implants Dita von Teese for example is no hourglass which is fine but she's ripped of so much that Page has done that it has become ludicrous and offensive to Page's fan. A tribute is one thing but lifting an entire carer is another:

Awww.. that's too bad! Hey maybe you can draw an imaginary bikini on your nude body like the one you did above? LOL, just kidding.. ;-)

Anyway, I never really get the hype of Dita von Teese. She's pretty for sure, but I thought she's a bit overrated.

Hi SuperAmanda, I'm really curious to know if I'm an hourglass or have the potential to be. My measurements are 38-30-38. Would you mind if I sent you a photo? Thanks so much

Hi SuperAmanda,
What a great list of very beautiful women! I have a question about high waisted shapes. A few times you have mentioned some women who are considered too high waisted to be an hourglass shape. I am just wondering what shape they could be considered? My measurements are 37-28-38 but I have high hip bones (but narrower than the butt level hip bones) and a shortish waist . This is difficult to dress because even if I have a waist high waisted jeans that hit my navel make by butt look disproportionally large/wide and my top half short. This is the same for skirts too. I find wearing lower rise jeans and a snug fitting t-shirt or a top with a belt at my waist works okay. Am I doing my self no favors wearing the lower rise jeans?
Also, I have the Callanetics dvds and they are pretty cool but incorporate pilates type exercises such as 'the hundreds' sort of sit ups. Will these square off the waist?

Btw Amanda, do you know Elisa Najera? She was Miss Mexico 2008 who competed in Miss Universe 2008. She finished 5th place and is also the winner of Best in Swimsuit. Google her up to see her pics/videos.

Would you consider her an hourglass? I think she's more of a column but she does have very small waist, full breasts and hips. Her body kinda reminds me of Kelly Brook's. What do you think? Is she an hourglass or not?
Posted: 7 years, 8 months ago at Feb 15 17:55
Huh, surprised that you actually know about Elisa Najera LOL. Thought I was the only one who knows who she is. Most of my friends have never heard of her (can you blame them?).

A guitar, eh? Well that's pretty interesting. Thought she was a cross between an hourglass and column. But her bust doesn't seem that small to me. I mean, compared to her waist, she seems to have full breasts/BWH ratio. Most guitars that I know are usually small/average-sized bust, like Beyonce or J.Lo.

EDIT : in your pic, her bust does seem pretty small (but not that small though), but if you watch her during the swimsuit segment, her bust seems pretty full. But then again, I'm always curious to know if they're actually surgically enhanced or not. At some point, they look a bit "fake". Perhaps she underwent plastic surgery prior to Miss Universe? Who knows... Check on her videos in youtube to see what I mean.

Howcome no one here mentions about the recent passing of Elizabeth Taylor? She's on the list too.

Hi Rocket: In answer to your above question, Monroe and Bardot as well as Joan Collins, Mimi Van, Julie Newmar, Dors and yes even Mansfield and Scar Jo are or were not hugely endowed like Ekberg, Wilikinson, Loren and others. A small waist makes any size bust look bigger.

Thnx 4 the reply. Ok so let's say am an hourglass shall I lose more weight I heard an hourglass weight shall vary from 130-140. Is that true.

More recent pictures of Scarlett Johansson would suggest she is not an hourglass but more of a column, or am I wrong? She is in workout gear if it makes any difference. I do not see a nipped-in waist and her waist to hip ratio does not look very high.

The list is based on women who's fame was established by having an hourglass which fits her despite becoming more athletic recently. Jennifer Connelly as well. Ageing, childbirth can change an hourglass figure and there is little one can do to stop this though that does not negate the established years of having said figure.
Posted: 7 years, 6 months ago at Apr 13 15:00
@Amanda: Oh okay, thanks for your answer. Btw do you happen to know the brassiere/cup size of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Joan Collins, Mimi Van, Julie Newmar, Diana Dors and Jane Mansfield & Scarlett Johansson?

I'm surprised that you said Mansfield was not that well endowed. I thought that she had a D cup (I heard that her bust even expanded to a DD when she was breastfeeding). Doesn't it qualify as LARGE? And what about Monroe? She may not be as large as Mansfield, but I'm pretty sure hers must be minimum a D. Do you still think of her (and all the other girls you've mentioned) not that well-endowed?

Btw what is your definition of a large and not-so-large bust? Is D still considered large to you? Well, what about smaller cup size such as C, B or even A? Can a woman be an hourglass with cup size less than D?

Thank you, Amanda.

@MegaWombat : I love your list, but I think you left out Betty Brosmer. I have to agree with Amanda, Betty Brosmer has the BEST hourglass figure thus why she is #1 on this list. She is by far the true definition of "small waist-to-hip ratio". You should check out her pics here in Listal. Seeing is believing. =)

Well, that pic of Amy was when she was 23 and not on crack. What a waste! And Im talking about Brody Dalle not Allen. I dont know who that even is so maybe you have the wrong person. And Betty is on almost everyone else's list so i thought she was widely considered an hourglass. Jillian has great muscular hips and some (not me but some websites)consider her an athletic one. All of these questions and comments were meant for everyone to comment on not just you. I was just posting them not sending them for your consideration , rocket. But Brody (Dalle) is no column. Or an hourglass but i just wanted to bring her to everyone's attention bc shes not that famous.
Posted: 7 years, 5 months ago at Apr 29 17:59
@vada_lee : Well it's up to you. If you refuse to take my words, then fine. I don't mind. Why should I even bother? I can't control what's in your head. If you think that Brody Dalle is an hourglass, then hey more power to you. I'm just simply stating my opinion. I may be wrong myself but that's not the point. The point is that's MY opinion. Whether you agree or disagree with me, that's your business. Cheers!

Oh btw, yeah I know that your question is not meant for me alone, so to anyone else here, feel free to add anything to the discussion.
Posted: 7 years, 5 months ago at Apr 30 7:27
Hi Vada, An Athletic hourglass in Lynda Carter or Welch. Jillian is the near opposite of hourglass figures. You may be confusing a toned wash board stomach and a small/average chest with an hourglass. Brody is not an hourglass, not even close which is fine she has a FAB body, she's not an hourglass though. Neither is Beyonce who has a proportionately very small bust. Check out the "Guitar Shaped Perfection list."

Many of the names you mention are really athletic with nearly linear physiques or are not busty and or small waisted enough to have an hourglass. They are still 100% lovely as are all body types.

Bettie Page, who has THEE best backside of all the Pin ups, was very small busted so therefore not an hourglass but a Guitar. Honestly, she's in a class all her own. I tell girls who complain about having "small boobs" to google BP. She has out classed and lived on for decades longer than hundreds of much more busty women-even women who were HUGE stars of their era. Few have lasted like Page has!

Damn, Amanda! Where did you get that picture of Bettie Page??? LOL
Posted: 7 years, 5 months ago at May 2 6:19
Btw what do you think of Victoria Silvstedt? Yeah I know her boobs are fake. But pretend they were REAL. If that's what her body looks like in real life, would you say she's an hourglass or not? I think she's more of a column. But I'm not too sure.
Posted: 7 years, 5 months ago at May 2 15:56
VS is DEFENITELY a column!
Posted: 7 years, 5 months ago at May 20 0:22
Amen, Amanda! I also hate those so-called crappy reality shows. God how I miss the early '90s and ANY era before that. At least TV and music in that era were not as crappy as todays. And most importantly: NO crappy reality shows. Hooray for that. And those were also the days where people still focus on TALENTS rather than looks and most artists (esp prior to the '70s) still put emphasis on substance over style, unlike today where most popular "artists" only think of their looks/performance rather than their art/body of work. Nowadays, you can't make it in the industry without a "gimmick" (e.g. having hot looks/bodies, or if you have sad sob inspirational story about your background that will encourage people to text message your name in American Idol, over-the-top outfits/fashion, dancing in your every music video, or adding rap to your music just to sell more records, etc). I like the old era better due to its originality and simplicity it brought and most importantly its devotion to TRUE art. Now everything is all about making everything into reality shows or 3D, booty-shaking, mind-blowing videos, pyrotechnics/laser, designer's dresses on the red carpet, lyrics containing profane words e.g. "b*tches" and "hoes" and "f*ck" everywhere, etc. Sorry I'm ranting here & it has nothing to do with hourglass figures, I know LOL. But you get my point.

Anyway, perhpas you can also make an article on breasts/bra sizes (in regards to hourglass figures) since I see that you're quite obsessed with it and like to talk about it all the time LOL (not trying to insult you here). A lot of people still don't understand about brassiere measurements. I read that a lot of women wear the wrong bra sizes their whole life. It seems that everytime we hear of cup D or more (say 28DD or 30H in US size), we automatically assume that the lady must have giant knockers. That's not always true (not to say that 28DD and 30H are small but there are also other factors that can make a breast look big or small, such as body height & weight, proportions of the body etc; I'm sure you understand better). That could be an inspiration for you. I always love reading what you have to write. =)

Hi SuperAmanda, I was just wondering, would I qualify as an hourglass? And if not, could you tell me what it is? I am 36-27-38, 5'9'' and 135 pounds; I've had a lot of issues with my body in the past and extreme dieting, but reading your blog and comments have helped me feel more confident about myself. (:

Also, would wearing a shaper or corset at night or all day help to make my waist smaller? Thank you!
Posted: 7 years, 4 months ago at Jun 12 20:20
Hi Brielle, Thanks for writing! I think you easily have the potential to have any shape you desire. I would not get into corset training as you already have a VERY small waist-lucky you! Wearing clothing that hits at the natural waist would be enough for you. If you have an issues with extreme dieting you will want to address those BEFORE embarking on any of the fitness regimens I write about. I understand your situation as do many who write me. Creating this list was not to pronounce some superiority in having an hourglass figure as ALL body types are wonderful. Best wishes and stay in touch, Super Amanda

Have you seen this list before? www.listal.com/list/bend-over

Is there any of them whom you feel is an hourglass? Or are they all basically column?
Posted: 7 years, 3 months ago at Jul 4 8:19
I'm sorry I am still a bit confused =) So if someones waist appears shorter or higher that has to do with how small it is? By the way thanks for you site it has helped me alot. According to all the sites I read and my measurement I am hourglass, and others say so to. You site really helped me because when I get to see all these hourglasses and recognize my body type in them its a very helpful. I know its supposed to be a rare shape so I wasn't so quick to believe it. But I dislike that its sooooo hard to fine clothes. Especially the styles that are in right now don't suit my body type.
Posted: 7 years, 3 months ago at Jul 6 12:39
Neither Doris MayDay or Gia Genevieve are as dramatically hourglassy as the pictures above show. Doris has admitted to waist training and wearing corsets in nearly all photoshoots. Both she and Gia are wearing corsets in the photos above. By the way, there is very visible use of Photoshop's Liquify tool in Gia's picture in the list. Otherwise, these are some unusual blinds.

I am not questioning either lady's body type and I love their work as much as ever. They look absolutely amazing. The only reason I am saying what I am saying is that their natural figures are not quite so unbelievably unusual (but still enviable).

Here is Doris MayDay uncorseted:
(probably) [Link removed - login to see]
(definitely) [Link removed - login to see]

Gia Genevieve uncorseted:
[Link removed - login to see]

On a sidenote, many have claimed that Betty Brosmer had the typical shape of someone who has undergone extensive, long-term corset training. Do you think this is true? Here is Mr. Pearl, whose torso/hips are the same shape and probably look pretty much the same with his corset off. It is not even worth saying that there is not an ounce of natural about this man's shape*
[Link removed - login to see]

*that said, from what I have read, Mr Pearl's talent is unquestionable; his corsets are works of art.
Posted: 7 years, 3 months ago at Jul 6 21:16
Mr. Pearl has definitely carved out a niche hasn't he? But no, he looks NOTHING like Betty. Some women have naturally VERY tiny waists. It isn't fair but that is the way it is and it can't always go back to some trick like corsets.

Simply WEARING a corset can't give you an hourglass figure if you were not endowed with a wthr or if one's waist is naturally thick (even if you are an hourglass who has been over weight for a few years), only Corset TRAINING can take it down.
Regarding Doris or Gia I do not agree that they are photoshop hourglasses. The photoshop on their pics is minimal in comparison to other public figures-in some cases like madonna, virtually non existent. They are proper hourglass figures.

Betty Weider's figure is 100% natural too and she did not corset train. I had a waist that was 15 inches smaller than my bust and hips when I was 19-21 years old. Betty is a very small boned woman who has scrupulously maintained her teenage figure for over 40 years. Liz Taylor had a tiny waist uncorseted too as did Bardot, Welch, Newmar and Mansfield. Why do you think they were famous? Many on this are very talented but it was those unrivalled figures that caught the attention of movie studios and top photgraphers. Discipline does NOT always mean corsets:

That is Raquel in a screen cap, no corset and she is 54 years old!! I think you are SEVERELY underestimating the amount of discipline and exercise that many stars go through.

Even with photoshop, implants and an extreme amount corset training Dita's figure is not an hourglass. Her hips are naturally too narrow:

Betty's hips are natural, rounder and wider:

Ninjachic: You wrote: "So if someones waist appears shorter or higher that has to do with how small it is? But I dislike that its sooooo hard to fine clothes. Especially the styles that are in right now don't suit my body type."

It depends, it has to with where it falls in proportion to the hips and the ribcage. The higher your natural waistline the higher your waist is.

Agreed the majority of clothing is for very thin women or the waist is cut really high and the bust is cut to small.
Posted: 7 years, 3 months ago at Jul 10 23:48
Okay thank you! Yes I'd say my waist is neither long but not short either. But Yea I have a hard time with dresses and shirt due to the bust is to high or small and the waist gaps. I just can't wait til I start sewing and tailoring my own clothes.

Just got back from a trip.

Hey you change your avatar pic again LOL.

Well anyway, regarding that Dita von Teese's vs. Betty Brosmer's waist-to-hip ratio, since you're such an expert in hourglass figure, then of course I have no doubt that you can see the difference straight away. But for the untrained eyes (like mine), all I see is that they both have very similar waist and hip width. I'm sorry but I have to be completely honest when I say that I can't tell the difference between that pic of Teese vs. Brosmer. Yes I know that Brosmer has much much smaller waist and rounder, curvier, shapelier hips/buttocks but in my eyes, I don't think Teese looks that "flat" although you said she's not an hourglass (eventhough it could probably because of photoshop, I have no idea TBH). Besides, no other ladies on your list who also have such small waist and such round hips as Brosmer's so if I take any of their pics and put them side-by-side with that Teese pic above, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference either.

Btw just like ninjachic, I'm still a bit confused about the definition of short waist vs. high waist. What is the meaning of "short" and "high" in this context so I won't misunderstand?

Btw does this mean you don't think that Jessica Simpson is an hourglass? Because many people (incl. myself) tend to believe she is one....

p.s: Since you're such a pin-up aficionado, thought you might like this: www.listal.com/list/vanities-girls-50sstyle-pinup

Hi Rocket, Listal pulled the bikini top close up as it simply vanished but then I was ready for a change despite whatever a stalking hater did to have it removed. A shorter waist figure is not a negative label., it just means one does not have an hourglass figure in the traditional sense because the waist to hip ratio is not that dramatic.

Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 22 10:55
I measure 35-23-35, guess I'm an hourglass :) Also, I think its quite common for hourglass figures to have small ribcages - my bra measurement is 28F.

Just wondering SuperAmanda, do you think the hourglass figure is really in decline? Or was it always rare? I read an article suggesting that women working has caused the change in their body shapes - that career driven women produce more testosterone and prevents women storing fat around the hips/thighs and chest. I'm not convinced by that argument. What do you think?
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 22 14:18
Those daily Mail pieces are bogus. I feel it is due to a severe change in clothing and workouts. I mention on my blog via the link in the intro. Cheers!
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 25 0:50
Lemme just check something...you don't have to have massive boobs and a huge butt to be an hourglass? You just have to have the measurements?
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 25 2:34
That is a tricky question and a good one. 90% of the measurements that celebrities and models issue are fake. Unless the celeb actually gets on camera and measures themselves you can never be sure. In my experience it based on a waist to hip ratio first.
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 25 7:58
Ahh now I'm being told I'm not an hourglass fairly often just because I'm a modest C and my butt isn't as fleshy as it could be! I am only in my mid teens though so I guess I've still got time to grow. My measurements are 35-26-35 which I think would just make me one. The lying celebs do humour me though!
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 25 7:59
Oh and does height ever play a part? Just a random question!
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 29 18:34

Can a hourglass have a small ribcage? Example hips shoulders bust equal big boobd butt small wait but a rib cage that is small but not as small as the waist. Someone with a 28f cup asked earlier.
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 29 20:13
@Ninja: A small ribcage is nearly always seen on an hourglass. Mansfield is an exception.

BethJT: Height does not seem to play a part.
Posted: 7 years, 2 months ago at Jul 29 23:13
Okay thank you I got everything that says hourglass including a F but I have a small ribcage so I had to be Sure . Plus my teacher she's a nurse said people with small waist usually have a small ribcage anatomically speaking.

Hi, I have a question about the hourglass figure and I think I just found the best place. I have an hourglass figure without a doubt, albeit a bit plus sized - 42-28-42 on mere 5'5 are my numbers. I'm 22 and wonder what time and possible future childeren do to women of my shape. A lot of the shape comes from the bone structure, so I suppose that as long as I don't gain an awful lot of weight I should be able to keep a trace of it regardless of hormone changes and having kids could even enhance it from what I've read... At what age we ussually look our best? Is this it (I hope not)?

Posted: 7 years, 1 month ago at Sep 7 20:34
The Hourglass shape is so controversial. Tons of speculations exist about it, with every body trying to define, but not coming up with a definite answer. Why 9/10/12/15 inch waist difference to hips/bust?
I don't think measurements matter really, as anybody can just take off a full inch or two.

An hourglass is just and hourglass in any outfit (not with padded bra, waist cincher/corsets/scosmetic surgery tricks), I agree.
However,EVEN in this list where women are in bikinis, they have been asked to pose as hourglasses (see the classic "one leg in front of the other" that would round any cone's or pear's hips to the right ratio). I'm not buying the photoshopped and the posing/corseting either way.
I'm a natural hourglass (athletic because I do/have always done lots of sports) and I've never worn any of the high waist skirts/trousers and all those moulding shapers/ people go through to achieve the "european" ideal (I'm african, so I couldn't care less about this fuss). I find it funny how those "celebrities" go through hell on the rood to impossible figure measurements. Utter nonsense.

I live in the Uk, and contrary to what is somehow said, there are women with amazing body shapes that are NOT hourglass or even size 14 (understand they are size 16+)! There is more truth and beauty in real life than what come from the media.
The more I see these altered and artificial human beings(NO ONE can put their hand to the fire and swear that none of these so called hourglass celebrities DIDN'T go through "cosmic" surgery) the more I love the people around me.

@SuperAmanda : is that Lady Gaga? LOL
Posted: 7 years, 1 month ago at Sep 15 20:34
Nach: I too live in the UK and yes I can and WILL put my "hand to the fire and swear that none of these so called hourglass celebrities DIDN'T go through surgery. :)

If you read the intro, I rarely included measurements on this list. The 95% of celebrities and models bold face lie about there stats. Until I see them on camera, in form fitting clothing take a measuring tape and measure I do not believe a word.

You wrote: "(see the classic "one leg in front of the other" that would round any cone's or pear's hips to the right ratio)."

very clever!

@Rocket: Yes, that is Lady gaga!

"Hip spring is calculated by subtracting the waist measurement from the hip measurement. However, this calculation fell into disuse because it is a poor indicator of attractiveness; for example, a hip spring of 10 inches (250 mm) would likely be considered quite attractive for an average-sized adult woman, but a child or petite woman with the same number would more likely be seen as malnourished." - wikipedia 2011

"A WHR of 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men have been shown to correlate strongly with general health and fertility. Women within the 0.7 range have optimal levels of estrogen and are less susceptible to major diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and ovarian cancers (tenuous).[6] Men with WHRs around 0.9, similarly, have been shown to be more healthy and fertile with less prostate cancer and testicular cancer." - wikipedia 2011

At the bottom of the page wikipedia lists all the studies that were done by qualified researchers to get this information.

In my opinion, unless you are a child, or have an extremely small frame all around, a waist of 17 inches is unhealthy and should not be glorified.
Posted: 7 years ago at Oct 13 14:51
WTHR is not what this list is and most of that wikipedia page is crazy false and I agree, the numbers named are unhealthy!

Hi Lady Mara, Thanks for your comment but I simply don't agree. Many have tried to place Scarlett Johansen in a similar place (small bust, wide hips) yet the recent pics of Scar Joh prove that she's a true hourglass and very busty. Like JLH she's not into heavy padding and accentuating her body and bust with corsets and body shapers. Jennifer Love Hewitt is known as "Jennifer Love HugeT*its". Guys the world over worship guitar shapes like Shakira and columns like Olivia Munn but JLH is known for her bust. The figure you are referring to is closer to Bettie Page:

JLH's has a very similar body to Bettie Page but with a slightly longer waist and a bigger bust line. Her body may have shifted weight a bit (as all hourglasses do) but like Jennifer Connelly the bulk of her time spent famous has been for being a charming screen entity and having a full bust. JLH does not pad either and often has gone braless and yet still looks busty-even in clothing like slip dresses. A guitar shape's bust will usually vanish visually without being accentuated. JLH wears clothing cut down at the hip as well and still has a tiny waist. She simply has too many curves going on to not be an hourglass! Being 5'2 1/2 she photographs wider than she actually is as well.
Posted: 6 years, 11 months ago at Nov 9 3:36
Well whatever shape JLH's body is, she's still a beautiful woman and that's what we ought to celebrate.

Hi super Amanda,I am really happy to see this list because all my life I always felt I was fat because most of the girls around me were slim (bananas) I am 37-26-37 ,I think I am hourglass what do u think.(Bust 34D)?
Also one more question is Victoria's secret model Candice Swaenpoel Hourglass? Cause she made to hourglass lists, however without the push up bra she is not that busty, but could be that she is slim hourglass?
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 5 21:38
Hi Skyisblue, you sound like a classic. Candice Swanpoel is a very, very dangerously underweight fashion model. She is not an hourglass. Bardot and Halle Berry are slim hourglasses.

Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 6 19:40
Thanks super Amanda its great to hear it from you.But I feel sometimes that pears have even more slender waists then hourglass.
And now I see the difference between Slim hourglass such as Bardot and Candice:)
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 12 2:49
Hi Amanda, I just found this from the internet : www.lovelyish.com/724553207/how-they-measured-up-measurements-of-vintage-hollywoods-leading-ladies/

What do you think of it? Would you believe it?

I know that you said we shouldn't believe in "measurements" issued by those celebs' PR but considering these are all old/vintage artists (so the chance of them lying about their measurements is probably slimmer), are you willing to accept these numbers?

And another article discussing about Barbie dolls. I find this pretty interesting. This has nothing to do with hourglass figures but it does refer to Barbie's measurements and how people often slander it. Plus it has a picture or Brigitte Bardot in it so it piques my interest a bit (okay I admit, I was initially looking for some Brigitte Bardot pics and I eventually ended up with this LOL).
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 12 3:11
10 inches difference between the waist and the hips/bust. Even if it's a tall, slender 35-20-35 body with no fat rolls everywhere (like Bardot's, only that she's not tall at all), those measurements should fit a dress no less than size 4, am I right? What do you say on this, Amanda?
Edit: 6 years, 10 months ago
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 12 16:11
That Daily Mail article is wrong or at least misinformed. Bardot was a prima Ballerina before being discovered by Roger Vadim. First "size zero" was Twiggy not Bardot. Bardot had simply a figure in a million. Not a good barometer for any kind of sizing or inspiration! Wil check out your old Hollywood links. HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 12 20:33
Well it's still a bit too early to say that but oh well, MERRY CHRISTMAS too Amanda, and to everyone here...!!!!!!

May you all have a joyful blessed holiday....!!!!!! =D

Here are two bikini shots of Bardot where her waist is not as tiny in comparison to the rest of her small frame. She looks very young in the first one, but perhaps in her thirties in the second photo.

Those shots were of Bardot after her baby and her waist is still pretty small there despite the lowrise clothing not doing it justice. She personified a very tiny waisted petite hourglass figure (35C/D-20-35) on a classically trained ballerina body for the bulk of her fame so she has a place that is more than assured on any hourglass list. Once again, her figure is so perfect and unique that she's not a good example for inspiration. You can see many women in the everyday with similar figures to Scar Jo, Jane Russell and Doris Mayday but no one has looked like Bardot since Bardot. As with Jennifer Connelly who after three children is now very slim B.B. still qualifies despite having a slightly more linear figure after childbirth (happens to some extent to most hourglass figures). The list is based on the figure they had at the height of their fame.

Hi, FML It is really hard to tell without photos but you sound like an hourglass to me. Thanks for visiting!
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 19 2:48
Just out of curiosity, what exactly qualifies as a "small" ribcage? Would the rib cage need to be say, 5 inches smaller in circumference than the hips? Or smaller?
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Dec 19 20:07
Hi Mommyof2, Not sure there is a formula. I think it is simply small in-proportion to the actual bust measurement. Bust is measured across the bust and around the back while ribcage is the underbust number aka band size.
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Dec 30 10:36
Hi SuperAmanda
Love your list i like how you are educating people on what's really an hourglass and not some fake.
Recently i told a girl that she's not an hourglass since she was bragging about having the measurement.
Her midsection isn't tiny compare to her Hip and Bust.
I would know an hourglass since my sister is one.
She have broad shoulder, tiny torso, tiny waist and wide hips.
Her measurement is 38 24 36 though her measurement are changing since she's losing weigh thanks to the brace which limit her diet.
Anyway this person now is attacking me about her claim which is false since she look a bit more like an rectangle.
Which my youngest sister have, she look like an hourglass yet at the end her bone structure don't meet the criteria at the end. Since she gain weight at midsection as well as other part of the body.
Anyway this is the girl pic, be warn it's nude pic.
[Link removed - login to see]
If she somehow reading this comment i bet she will rant about this too since she already quote me from my previous comments.
I wasn't rude to the person, i was just telling her a fact and other people have mention about it earlier.
Anyway i hope you can give me your opinion since you seem to know about this stuff. I know I'm not wrong because if an hourglass were to gain weight the fat will go especially to the bun/hip and bust while their waist/midsection stay smaller. Anyway please comment back and thank you for reading this comment!

Should hourglass women be wearing skinny/straight jeans or bootcut/flare? I find both are fine, but I tend to like skinny
or straight more since I like everything to be clingy and not baggy.
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 3 13:29
Nice list but Jennifer Love Hewitt is a pear. She may have big boobs but when you take into account her whole body structure you see she's a pear with boobs. She have very narrow shoulders and she puts on most of her weight on her legs. She also lacks the knee and ankle definition that hourglasses have.
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 3 15:10
@Stellablue: Thanks for saying hello. I can't get into the deviant art site. Sounds like no big deal and I would not be worried about it. I actually have so many requests that I currently have no time to do figure analysis unless the request is really personal.

@Ninjachic: as long as they are not low rise than all jeans are fine. Some skinnies tend not to work on wider hips and more voluptuous statuesque legs not because they don't look good but because they are not comfortable. If you have to wear low rise keep it to a few hours a week at the most.

@Nke: Hi, Jennifer Love Hewitt is not a guitar shape (don't like to use "pear") my views on JLH are addressed a half dozen comments above with lady Mara. Scarlett Johansen's recent nude pics proved she is not a guitar shaped and very busty despite many claiming she too is a guitar. JLH is in that same realm. Rarely do both actresses pad their bras or wear corsets. Being busty is not something they talk about incessantly in every interview as well. Like Monroe both are not HUGELY busty but then most hourglass figures are not. Once again, the list is based on what the figure that the model or actress has been known for during the duration of their fame.
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 3 17:22
Thanks. I didn't think that JLH padded her bra or wore corsets. The fact that she is busty doesn't really put her in the hourglass realm. Most women are combinations of different body shapes and JLH is more of an hourglass/guitar combo. She's busty but the rest of her body structure says guitar to me. Yes, I agree that JLH has been known for being an hourglass but then so has Eva Mendes! Well, I stand by her being a guitar. I saw above you wrote something about hourglasses being B-C cups even. Are you talking UK sizes?
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 4 5:58
it's ok I understand, I'll just ignored the person and let her believe what ever she believe. Though she shouldn't title herself hourglass but just "curvy". =p
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 6 5:33
I love to come back and look through this list. It's probably my favorite but I love all your lists.

I was looking through your other lists and couldn't find your Katy Perry one, which I also like to look at occasionally. Where did it go?

Stella: I will check it out at some point. always best to ignore when in doubt!
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 6 6:03
NKE: No, until I get into using terms like F which is in between a DD and DDD, I don't refer to UK sizing even though that is all I wear. With JLH I'm going primarily on her most famous years:

She's an hourglass in both photos:
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Jan 8 2:40
Yes I agree JLH is a hourglass. People forget that with a hourglass figure certain clothes can throw you off. If I wear the wrong outfit I look top heavy,if I wear the wrong outfit I look pear shaped. If I wear a balanced outfit,or a all over clingy outfit you see my shape and it is hourglass. Adding bulk to the upper or lower half on a figure with equal hip and bust will trick the eye and allow you to think they are something else.

Can hourglasses wear body con dresses and skirts? These are my favorite besides a-line and pencil.
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Jan 21 9:44
commenting on lisas comment from over a year ago you are same as me.what kate winslet is. A vase which is a streched hourglass. if you are comfused look up trinny and suzanna 12 body shapes 3 of them fit into the hourglass catagory. there is the typical hourglass, the cello that is slightly bottom heavy, and the vase that is an hourglass thats slightly streeched the waist is longer and you dont go in and out as much but are curvy, kelly brook is also under that catagory though she looks more like and hourglass in this pic..
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Jan 22 2:30
Thanks for posting Mel, I actually don't agree with Trinny and Suzanna's body shapes at all nor do I use them in my work. I use Hourglass, Guitar, Diamond, Column or Rocket. When what gets down to individualized body types than there is literately a different type for each woman as it should be. Two women with the same measurements and body types can look and fit completely different in the same clothing.

Kelly Brook is NOT even slightly "bottom heavy", she's virtually symmetrical. Full hips which all hourglass figures have, don't mean "heavy".
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Jan 22 5:48
sorry i wasnt implying that kelly brooke was bottom heavy at all. Just that her body type like kate winslet if you look it up dosent have the typical short hourglass waist its sort of a streched hour glass to the variation comment i posted earlier. A bottom heavy hourglass would be kim kadastrian
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Jan 22 19:43
No worries, I see what you mean. I personally would place KK as an hourglass though she does not qualify to be on this list because she's largely known for doing a hardcore sex tape and reality TV and this list is porn free.
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Jan 24 12:03
Okay so I know Demi Lovato was brought up a while back already. But now that shes in a eating disorder/purging state she has come back alot more full/curvy. What body shape do you think she is? guitar, hourglass, column?

SuperAmanda, I read your article on the hourglass figure and I wanted to ask you a question about pilates. I have considered taking it up to define my legs but at the same time I don't want to lose my waist. My waist has natural definition but I'm afraid of boxing it out, as you pointed out for pilates. You mentioned that you do pilates but that you do not combine leg work with core work? Is it possible to isolate the two? Any tips on how to do pilates for the legs and keep my waist? Thanks
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Jan 27 14:32
Easier to do as long as you are on the apparatus (Trap Table or reformer) not as simple if you are doing mat work. I believe in the essay that I explain what to tell your trainer and what to avoid in Pilates. To difficult to explain beyond that without demonstrating but in very short: avoid long stretch, plank stretch, frog, climb a tree on the reformer and ALL Wunda chair and Barrel work. Seated weight machines are far better just keep the weight load to 75 to 80% and 12 to 15 reps instead of 100% and 8 reps. Always stretch afterwards.

What is your take on this lady, Ioana Spangenberg, "the Romanian model with a 20-inch waist"? In the DM article all shots have her wearing a corset but on the other site there are a few without. She is very underweight (claiming naturally so, benefit of the doubt), but that aside, is she an actual hourglass?

I saw. Do note that Bette Brossmer was 39-19-35 at 5'5 in her teens/20's, 30's and 38-21-35 in her 50's etc and weighed 112 to 125 pounds which (while very unique) IS very healthy. The model has a metabolic disorder and what looks like some form of early onset arthritis or a congenital issue like early osteoporosis. She has low muscle tone on her legs and arms. This list is of physically healthy women not just women who look like Hourglasses.
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Mar 10 3:59
Hello, I want to ask if you ever consider the side view (profile) of these women. They're all perfect hourglasses frontally (is that a word?) And measurement wise. But I've noticed some don't really have butts (eg. Jennifer Conelly). To me it looks great when an hourglass figure's profile view is not disproportionate with regards to the fullest part of the breast and the fullest part of the butt, like most of the ladies on this list, especially the newer hourglasses(Sofia Vergara). The older, pinup ladies seem to be disproportionate in profile (not all), eg. June Wilkinson. What about Kenya Moore, Nicole Scherzinger, and Marissa Miller as hourglasses?
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Mar 11 2:43
Hi Zariah , This is list is based on the definitive smallness of the waist primarily in proportion to the rest of the figure and a bust and hips that are within the same proportions. Side view is not what I use to qualify an hourglass because then you can't see the hip lines or shoulders. I know that some have called the figure you refer to as "the S curve" body or even a modernized take via calling that figure "an Hourglass" but that's not my criteria which is why Beyonce, Bettie Page and JLO are on the Guitar Shaped perfection List.

June Wilkinson has a bust measurement of about three inches over her hips but like Uschi Digard she was still a proper hourglass because most of it is in the front. Nicole and Marisa Miler are definitely not hourglass figures (I go by unretouched photos):

I have never heard of Kenya Moore but she surely must have one the greatest bods ever. I cannot find any unretouched photos of her so I'm currently not able to give you an opinion.
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Mar 15 1:41
Thanx. I wasn't sure about Nicole and Marissa because they're always posing strategically. I'm pretty sure though about Kenya Moore (having seen her nearly nude in a movie).
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Mar 15 2:02
Oh I see now (just looked at pics), although they both have (T & A) and would no doubt have an S shape from the side, th actual torso is quite columnar.
Where exactly do you measure bust, waist and hip. I measure directly under the bust, underneath ribcage and low at the hipbone (where a really low rider jean would sit, a la Britney Spears' 'Slave for you Days'). I see so many alternative measurments now, for example the measure at the widest part of the hip, for me that would include the butt (which is how I think Jessica Alba, Gisele Bundchen and the like cook up their number - cos they do kinda have round butt that would up their slim hipped numbers).
Also do you actually measure the fullest part of the breast? (This I imagine also boosts Jassica & Gisele's numbers). I've also noticed some people claiming the waist is right above the navel (as in mere mm), I'm pretty sure this is too low for the waist; and that the real waist is just where the ribcage ends.
I hope this wasn't too long, I just really want to know where to measure.
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Mar 15 4:20
Gisele's measuremnets are 100% fiction. Jessica Alba whom I like had her's unfairly inflated in a fake study.

I measure right across the fullest point of the breasts and the fullest part of the behind and hips, usually the halfway point. Waist will be different on everyone because of height and torso length.
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Mar 15 5:42
Thanx again. Using your method of measurement, I was 37-22-36. Than I gained weight and had 44-33-44 measurements, I lost weight and now have 39-26.5-40 measurements. The way I was measuring, my current measurements would be 32.5-26.5-34. I had always thought I was an apple/rocket because although my hips are wide, my bum was "flattish", and I gained a lot of weight on my waist and stomach. But my shape is quite clear in slim fitting clothes. Your articles and notes on both your blog and here, are very informative, because I had no idea how to maintain the body now that I have it back. I did do pilates while losing weight but I wasn't super intense about it (once a week only). I mostly did cardio (lots of boxing), but did. And still do dancing (especially belly dancing) and hula hooping.
Are martial arts okay to do? I do karate, and have done it my whole life except for 4years, although I did ballet as well. Are there types one shouldn't do?

I'm so glad I came across your article today. I used to be very self conscious of my body growing up. My "friends" always had snarky comments about my size and weight which caused me to hate my body to the point which I would've done anything to be a size 2 like them. Being Asian, if you're not petite and short, then you're fat and a giant. I've been called fat, big-boned, and many other mean names throughout my life. Only until recently have i learned to love myself and my body. I am 5'7.5", weighing 150lbs, with measurements of 40 - 30 - 41, size 9 to 11 jeans (depending on the brand) and for the first time ever I'm actually proud to admit that. I didn't really consider myself to have an HGF before because I assumed if my hips are larger than my bust then I would automatically be a pear shape. Anyway, what do you think..am I an hour glass in your expert opinion?

Amanada this blog is amazing. I have a question for you. My meausrements are currently 41-32-41 1/2 Do you think I have what it takes to scuplt my body into an ultimate hourglass? I love too see curvy women, but theres a difference with curves and being overweight (I actually think Christina Hendricks fall into this and relies on good underwear to help her). I have always got loads of compliments about my figure. I have no idea if am hourglas, as I hought you had to have a waist, bust hip ratio with a difference of at least 10 inches? Im a 36dd, my waist is 26 and my hips are 34-35 so, I thought my hips were too small?
Posted: 6 years, 1 month ago at Aug 30 0:01
Hi Sereia, I beg to differ. Hendricks is not overweight she's trim and uniquely built compared to 99% of Hollywood where woman are very underweight and small chested and narrow hipped. Hendricks is not where she is today because she's "overweight" she's in great physical condition and very healthy. I would need to work with you to be able to give you a figure analysis. I ask a nominal donation on my blog and then you have me at your disposal to answer all your questions etc. All my best, Super Amanda

Ah I saw those too! But which women with curves apart from Kelly Brook and a few others in their early 20s look great in a swimsuit compared to the fake images we see repeated in the millions of underweight linear woman? Few women. They had her bending over in longshot too! camera adds loads of weight!

I have seen a lot of articles about her in the media lately and lots of comments about her figure. I have to say, shes very unusual looking and striking but her figure is awful. I dont get the fuss with Victoras Secrets Models? When I see curvy women modelling underwear (curvy to me is a shape with curving hips, waist and boobs) then it makes me want to buy the underwear. If I see it on someone who is straighter and a bit boney, it doesn't make me want to buy it -no matter how pretty they are.

Interesting list, most of your choices are hourglass or very curvy cones or pears, but some of them, like Bardot's case, were wearing corsets or belts that made the illusion of an impossibly tiny waist, not to say that they're not hourglass, though.

I, however, disagree with some of the women on the list, such as Scarlett and Jennifer Connelly. Scarlett is a column with big breasts and thighs but no waist definition and Jennifer Connelly seems like a ruler:

I remember you said that body type changes with age and that it true to some point, you can become skinnier or fuller, but fat distribution doesn't change so much and even if it did, waist and hips are pretty important to determine someone's figure, but those are bones (small ribcage and big pelvic/hipbones) and only change during teen years. Many fuller figured women accentuate their curves with certain clothes, but doesn't mean they are necessarily hourglasses.

What about skinny hourglasses such as Nina Dobrev?

Hi, Jennifer Connelly was an hourglass like no other. To provide you with any kind of consulting and figure analysis you'll need to go here. I ask for a donation and then I can design a programme for you and/or answer any questions. Thanks

The donation button through Pay pal can be reached on the front of the blog . Thanks

I love this list! I'm an hourglass, though on the larger side but I'm trying to subtract a couple of those hours. :) In addition to taking tango and samba dance classes, I also try to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps in a day as many days a week as I can. Obviously some days/weeks afford more time than others. I bought myself a pedometer and I've noticed a difference.

Great group of girls. Carol Vorderman is a natural wonder.

I think Meagan Good sports the best hourglass in Hollywood today.

We have much more in Italy than Sophia Loren. In all of Italy the form of the woman is very much the same as a Coca bottle!
