"How to get an Hourglass Figure"
(the ORIGINAL most widely googled article now expanded only on Super Amanda blogger)
http://superamanda.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-get-hourglass-figure-indepth.html
The "measurements" issued by PR people are almost always fake which is why few are included here. The definition of what an hourglass figure is has changed over the years so to be clear, this list focuses on the classic hourglass shape of the late 1940s and early 1950s. It starts with women from that era to women who today still bring to mind this same very figure. Whether they were hourglasses, athletic, boyish, petite, heavy or very buxom, all women of the 40s and 50s had very defined waists. One need only glance at any old photo of the public pools or beaches. Clothing was better constructed and overall people were smaller than today. So if you do not see your favourite star on here it is not because the author does not think they are curvy or tiny waisted, this is simply my own interpretation of the classic Hourglass figure. This list should not be seen as a guide to "what the best body is" or how you should look. These are strictly my own opinions and I can't stress enough how I think ALL female body types are wonderful.
I have an almost 5'10 hourglass figure of myself, I wrote one of the most widely Googled articles on the HGF and I''m at the end on this mostly chronological list. I've found far too much misrepresentation of what an hourglass figure is by the media, fashion magazines, many PR agencies and even the celebs and models themselves. Furthermore, most fashion writers or designers who write about or design clothing for an hourglass figure don't have one of their own. This is evident in how little decent reproduction vintage clothing exists despite a boom in recent years unless bespoke. Most of what I've seen is cut incorrectly through the torso with the waist usually either too high, too wide or too low. Often in structured pieces there is also not enough delineation and/or length between the bust, ribcage and waist. The natural, nipped in waist in fashions for all body types is now mostly gone.
This list is comprised of women who look literally like an hourglass and do not need heavy corsets and photo shop to create this natural effect. Virtually all these photos show the form unencumbered by computer retouching and photo shop. Some subtle lighting was used in many old school photographs of hourglass bombshells but as you can see, unlike almost all magazine/paparazzi/swimsuit photo today, the photographer did not create what is not there and NOTHING was resized. These HG figures range in height, weight, frame and proportion; some are athletic dancers or soft and very, very busty and voluptuous. Some are more petite, small busted and fine boned, some shorter and stockier while others are tall and thin or tall and fuller figured or/and Amazonian while other women on the list have literally PERFECTLY symmetrical figures.
The often discussed subject of how many of these woman would "not be hired today in a skinny hard body obsessed media" is simply false; the media could only dream of women like the first portion of the list reappearing and indeed many are constantly imitated by Madison Ave in bad photo shoots by cultural illiterates like Steven Meisel.
Finally, many feel an hourglass figure is only really possible with a corset-not true at all. Natural hourglass figures simply do not gain or store much weight in the upper torso or waist, we carry it in either the hips, legs, shoulders and/or arms. Our weight and breast size can fluctuate due to child birth, age etc but we nearly always have hips and busts that are about 9 to 12 inches or so than our waist when measured at the fullest point of both the bust and the hips. Cup and breast size can vary. The hourglass figure is associated with higher fertility rates for obvious reasons but it is a trickier shape to get back after childbirth for some.

If you like them, write me back ;)
Although they´re not worldly famous, i think emilia attias and carla conte are hourglasses. But i couldn´t find a picture of emilia that shows those sexy curves since she now works in tv show for kids and teenagers
"In some articles...so I'm a little bit confused :)))"
The media lies about what woman's shapes nearly all the time so I would start ignoring them and read the independent opinions of those who are not being paid to sell you something. :)
I was wondering how I might contact you for more information about hourglass figures :)
In most of my videos and pics online I'm (42.5)34FF bra-28-40 and 165. In my early 20's before I filled out and grew to my current height of almost 5'10 I was 37(34D+ bra)-22-37 and 5'8.5 which was awesome because I could wear almost anything and my waist was crazy tiny.
Kudos, this list is excellent, along with your other lists, my favorite being the list of Most overrated bodies. My sentiments exactly, it felt very liberating to read that I am not alone with my views, especially regarding Katy Perry. As a feminist myself though, I have to ask why you decided to include Kim Kardashian in this list alongside these naturally drop dead gorgeous, talented, articulate and genuine women... it comes off a tad hypocritical and like you are working against your own cause. You yourself wrote the following in the comments when Harumi Namoto was suggested: "Harumi is far too top heavy plus I believe in having lists that are porn free/manga free. I'm not anti-porn, I just would never put porn stars in the same league as the women on this list who have made it on not just looks but talent, personality, charm and not giving away "the store." Porn stars are not celebrities and models to me. I think they belong on hard drives not in the mainstream. Mystery is where it's at. "
Kim Kardashian is Paris Hilton's ex-bff whose claim to fame is a "leaked" sex tape, in which she actually goes as far to receive a golden shower. Classy lady :] Not to mention that her entire family is addicted to plastic surgery, her included( just of course she is the only one who hasn't admitted it yet, but it's just so noticeable, especially now that she is going overboard with the facial surgeries).. on Keeping up with the Kardashians( early episodes) I believe there was a discussion about her breast implants, and of course plenty of rumours regarding liposuction and butt implants. Yes I have seen the picture she posted of herself as a youngin, and I don't deny that she had breasts to begin with, but hey, many everyday women with perfectly sized breasts still decide to go under the knife, and when it is encouraged by your entire family whose sole purpose in life is chasing fame no matter the cost, why would you be the exception? Since you omitted other contenders from the list due to plastic surgery, corsetting, porn, etc and generally reading your views on mass media and pop culture, I really feel she should be removed. And in my opinion, even with her surgeries, to my eye, she is still closer to being pear-shaped, than hourglass. Other than this, awesome job on the lists, and kudos, you have amazing curves, I'm sure your husband is a happy man :)
Good call sister!

Also, any word on if Sofia Vergara has had implants? When she was on a Spanish TV show in the 90s, Control, it seems like her chest was a lot smaller. Could it have naturally grown drastically from then and now?
As for Vergara? No she's 100% natural. Your bust can get bigger as time goes by, with children, weight etc. Mine definitely has!
PS: I agree, I liked your list better than that guys, he had some top heavy and fake/altered women in there for sure.
Also, one of us should start a clothing line with smaller waisted jeans that we can fit over our hips and butts! Haha. Seriously, its even harder when your in a size one, they figure who could possible have more than a stick figure at that size...
Bardot, Scar Joh, Ava Gardner, Joan Collins, Dorothy Dandridge and yes, even Marilyn Monroe are all woman who are somewhere between a B and C and who more than qualify are smaller than the current average which is about a 32/34/36D (new sizing, NOT old school). You have great measurements and agreed just beacuse an hourglass is associated with a full bosom in pop culture terms does NOT automatically mean everyone who is an hourglass has to be busty. Good point! Cheers!
Too-ta-loo
Ah, here it is. But yes isn't that surprising. I have just about the same measurements but I am 3 inches shorter, and not nearly shaped the way she is. Ha, I wish I had money to completely waste so I could buy the dress and see what it looks liks. I always liked that plum purple colored dress with the like ruffle ties in the front if you recall.

Don't know if you'll be able to view it, though.
Btw are ALL kinds of dance good for hourglass figure? Regarding my previous questions, how does ballet help to achieve hourglass figures? Because to me, most ballerinas are column? As a matter of fact, I thought that professional ballerinas must be skinny enough so they can dance/move more easily.. just like models should be skinny enough so they can be a perfect human mannequin that shows the clothes to its best advantage.
Another question, why should women who want to achieve hourglass figures limit swimming? Swimming is a cardio exercise, right? I thought that all kinds of cardio workout is good for you whatever type/shape your body is.
Remember the guidelines in my article are for those who want to perfect the hourglass they already have or who want to make a more linear or rocket shape body look closer to an hourglass. If you are an HRG and swimming is working for you then by all means don't give it up.
Belly dancing is of course great as is Ballrooom. Ballet dancers all vary as all dancers do ( the best hourglass figure I've ever seen is classically trained ballerina, though she is a rare beauty on off the stage) but my point was NOT to call all of them hourglasses, my point was that it is a great way to get in shape if you have an hourglass -not to become a ballerina which is like being an athlete-but to compliment your current cardio, waist sculpting and weight regimen
The majority of the ballet exercises strengthen inner thighs, quads and arms without building. Four hours of ballet a week will sculpt an hourglass figure much better than swimming or kick boxing- guaranteed. There is a lot of waist work and a lot of elongation work for natural grace and lengthening. Women really see their body make amazing changes and i know many pus size woman who take it can even teach. The stringent demands on the weight loss do not exist unless you are at a company. that is not what I'm suggesting at all.
Not all cardio is created equal. If someone is going to invest hours of time a week then you should no what your doing and which type of muscle specific training you are putting your body through. The stair master built up many woman's quads and calves as did Step aerobics which is why both are no longer popular.
Betty Weider has been known to many of us Pinup aficionados and for her era and in/throughout the world of fitness she has always been very famous. The movies are not for everyone, even if you have a flawless body. She dedicated her life to fitness and strength training along with her husband Joe who changed the face of fitness. With only a few free weights and a healthy diet ANYONE can resculpt the exact body they want. It's funny how many gadgets and pills people thing they need when it is so simple!

are not as famous today as Bettie Page though should be as their physiques are still unrivalled. Page had that black hair, bangs and unlike the others, she did very explicit films and photography plus she showed both sides (good girl wholesome AND hardcore bondage. SnM at that point was 100% underground so as fetish has moved into the mainstream so did Page. It is amazing though, she has the smallest bust of the pinup queens and is not a blond but she is almost as well known as Monroe now and she single handily defines the term pinup along with Varga. Like Monroe she new how to maximize a smaller bust and use her tiny waist to work the camera and give the impression of being mega busty.
I also think with the new emphasis on the booty which started with Beyonce and JLo, Page with her fantastic hips to waist ratio and backside seems more modern as well. It never ceases to amaze me how many terrible imitators are out there pretending and ripping her off. Page did not need a corset either-that was her true figure. Without a corset and implants Dita von Teese for example is no hourglass which is fine but she's ripped of so much that Page has done that it has become ludicrous and offensive to Page's fan. A tribute is one thing but lifting an entire carer is another:

Anyway, I never really get the hype of Dita von Teese. She's pretty for sure, but I thought she's a bit overrated.
What a great list of very beautiful women! I have a question about high waisted shapes. A few times you have mentioned some women who are considered too high waisted to be an hourglass shape. I am just wondering what shape they could be considered? My measurements are 37-28-38 but I have high hip bones (but narrower than the butt level hip bones) and a shortish waist . This is difficult to dress because even if I have a waist high waisted jeans that hit my navel make by butt look disproportionally large/wide and my top half short. This is the same for skirts too. I find wearing lower rise jeans and a snug fitting t-shirt or a top with a belt at my waist works okay. Am I doing my self no favors wearing the lower rise jeans?
Also, I have the Callanetics dvds and they are pretty cool but incorporate pilates type exercises such as 'the hundreds' sort of sit ups. Will these square off the waist?
Would you consider her an hourglass? I think she's more of a column but she does have very small waist, full breasts and hips. Her body kinda reminds me of Kelly Brook's. What do you think? Is she an hourglass or not?
A guitar, eh? Well that's pretty interesting. Thought she was a cross between an hourglass and column. But her bust doesn't seem that small to me. I mean, compared to her waist, she seems to have full breasts/BWH ratio. Most guitars that I know are usually small/average-sized bust, like Beyonce or J.Lo.
EDIT : in your pic, her bust does seem pretty small (but not that small though), but if you watch her during the swimsuit segment, her bust seems pretty full. But then again, I'm always curious to know if they're actually surgically enhanced or not. At some point, they look a bit "fake". Perhaps she underwent plastic surgery prior to Miss Universe? Who knows... Check on her videos in youtube to see what I mean.
RIP Elizabeth. You will be sorely missed.
Since u r the expert. I have been wondering am

I'm surprised that you said Mansfield was not that well endowed. I thought that she had a D cup (I heard that her bust even expanded to a DD when she was breastfeeding). Doesn't it qualify as LARGE? And what about Monroe? She may not be as large as Mansfield, but I'm pretty sure hers must be minimum a D. Do you still think of her (and all the other girls you've mentioned) not that well-endowed?
Btw what is your definition of a large and not-so-large bust? Is D still considered large to you? Well, what about smaller cup size such as C, B or even A? Can a woman be an hourglass with cup size less than D?
Thank you, Amanda.
Can a body's type change through years (7-13 years) in this case?
I still want to post that pic but I don't know how.
Thnx
Oh btw, yeah I know that your question is not meant for me alone, so to anyone else here, feel free to add anything to the discussion.
Many of the names you mention are really athletic with nearly linear physiques or are not busty and or small waisted enough to have an hourglass. They are still 100% lovely as are all body types.

Anyway, perhpas you can also make an article on breasts/bra sizes (in regards to hourglass figures) since I see that you're quite obsessed with it and like to talk about it all the time LOL (not trying to insult you here). A lot of people still don't understand about brassiere measurements. I read that a lot of women wear the wrong bra sizes their whole life. It seems that everytime we hear of cup D or more (say 28DD or 30H in US size), we automatically assume that the lady must have giant knockers. That's not always true (not to say that 28DD and 30H are small but there are also other factors that can make a breast look big or small, such as body height & weight, proportions of the body etc; I'm sure you understand better). That could be an inspiration for you. I always love reading what you have to write. =)
Here's a picture:

Also, would wearing a shaper or corset at night or all day help to make my waist smaller? Thank you!
Is there any of them whom you feel is an hourglass? Or are they all basically column?
I am not questioning either lady's body type and I love their work as much as ever. They look absolutely amazing. The only reason I am saying what I am saying is that their natural figures are not quite so unbelievably unusual (but still enviable).
Here is Doris MayDay uncorseted:

Gia Genevieve uncorseted:

On a sidenote, many have claimed that Betty Brosmer had the typical shape of someone who has undergone extensive, long-term corset training. Do you think this is true? Here is Mr. Pearl, whose torso/hips are the same shape and probably look pretty much the same with his corset off. It is not even worth saying that there is not an ounce of natural about this man's shape*
[Link removed - login to see]
*that said, from what I have read, Mr Pearl's talent is unquestionable; his corsets are works of art.
Simply WEARING a corset can't give you an hourglass figure if you were not endowed with a wthr or if one's waist is naturally thick (even if you are an hourglass who has been over weight for a few years), only Corset TRAINING can take it down.
Regarding Doris or Gia I do not agree that they are photoshop hourglasses. The photoshop on their pics is minimal in comparison to other public figures-in some cases like madonna, virtually non existent. They are proper hourglass figures.
Betty Weider's figure is 100% natural too and she did not corset train. I had a waist that was 15 inches smaller than my bust and hips when I was 19-21 years old. Betty is a very small boned woman who has scrupulously maintained her teenage figure for over 40 years. Liz Taylor had a tiny waist uncorseted too as did Bardot, Welch, Newmar and Mansfield. Why do you think they were famous? Many on this are very talented but it was those unrivalled figures that caught the attention of movie studios and top photgraphers. Discipline does NOT always mean corsets:
http://www.operagloves.com/vidcaps3/NakedGun3313/RaquelWelch/raquelwelch-nakedgun054.jpg
That is Raquel in a screen cap, no corset and she is 54 years old!! I think you are SEVERELY underestimating the amount of discipline and exercise that many stars go through.
http://www.ironguru.com/images/stories/betty-weider-vince-gironda.jpg
Even with photoshop, implants and an extreme amount corset training Dita's figure is not an hourglass. Her hips are naturally too narrow:
http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2008/08b/Teese02_450x575.jpg
Betty's hips are natural, rounder and wider:
http://a1.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/24/888163d51e5b44027b9079a3b0f0db6e/l.jpg
It depends, it has to with where it falls in proportion to the hips and the ribcage. The higher your natural waistline the higher your waist is.
Agreed the majority of clothing is for very thin women or the waist is cut really high and the bust is cut to small.

She ships worldwide and can do ANYTHING! A true artist.
Hey you change your avatar pic again LOL.
Well anyway, regarding that Dita von Teese's vs. Betty Brosmer's waist-to-hip ratio, since you're such an expert in hourglass figure, then of course I have no doubt that you can see the difference straight away. But for the untrained eyes (like mine), all I see is that they both have very similar waist and hip width. I'm sorry but I have to be completely honest when I say that I can't tell the difference between that pic of Teese vs. Brosmer. Yes I know that Brosmer has much much smaller waist and rounder, curvier, shapelier hips/buttocks but in my eyes, I don't think Teese looks that "flat" although you said she's not an hourglass (eventhough it could probably because of photoshop, I have no idea TBH). Besides, no other ladies on your list who also have such small waist and such round hips as Brosmer's so if I take any of their pics and put them side-by-side with that Teese pic above, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference either.
Btw just like ninjachic, I'm still a bit confused about the definition of short waist vs. high waist. What is the meaning of "short" and "high" in this context so I won't misunderstand?
Btw does this mean you don't think that Jessica Simpson is an hourglass? Because many people (incl. myself) tend to believe she is one....
p.s: Since you're such a pin-up aficionado, thought you might like this: http://www.listal.com/list/vanities-girls-50sstyle-pinup
Their bodies may not be able to match the real glorious pin-up stars of the '50s or '60s but the way I see it, they give a nice tribute so I applaud them for their effort.
Just wondering SuperAmanda, do you think the hourglass figure is really in decline? Or was it always rare? I read an article suggesting that women working has caused the change in their body shapes - that career driven women produce more testosterone and prevents women storing fat around the hips/thighs and chest. I'm not convinced by that argument. What do you think?
Can a hourglass have a small ribcage? Example hips shoulders bust equal big boobd butt small wait but a rib cage that is small but not as small as the waist. Someone with a 28f cup asked earlier.
BethJT: Height does not seem to play a part.
Btw is Monica Bellucci (back when she was young) an hourglass or not?
I don't think measurements matter really, as anybody can just take off a full inch or two.
An hourglass is just and hourglass in any outfit (not with padded bra, waist cincher/corsets/scosmetic surgery tricks), I agree.
However,EVEN in this list where women are in bikinis, they have been asked to pose as hourglasses (see the classic "one leg in front of the other" that would round any cone's or pear's hips to the right ratio). I'm not buying the photoshopped and the posing/corseting either way.
I'm a natural hourglass (athletic because I do/have always done lots of sports) and I've never worn any of the high waist skirts/trousers and all those moulding shapers/ people go through to achieve the "european" ideal (I'm african, so I couldn't care less about this fuss). I find it funny how those "celebrities" go through hell on the rood to impossible figure measurements. Utter nonsense.
I live in the Uk, and contrary to what is somehow said, there are women with amazing body shapes that are NOT hourglass or even size 14 (understand they are size 16+)! There is more truth and beauty in real life than what come from the media.
The more I see these altered and artificial human beings(NO ONE can put their hand to the fire and swear that none of these so called hourglass celebrities DIDN'T go through "cosmic" surgery) the more I love the people around me.
If you read the intro, I rarely included measurements on this list. The 95% of celebrities and models bold face lie about there stats. Until I see them on camera, in form fitting clothing take a measuring tape and measure I do not believe a word.
You wrote: "(see the classic "one leg in front of the other" that would round any cone's or pear's hips to the right ratio)."
very clever!
@Rocket: Yes, that is Lady gaga!
"A WHR of 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men have been shown to correlate strongly with general health and fertility. Women within the 0.7 range have optimal levels of estrogen and are less susceptible to major diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and ovarian cancers (tenuous).[6] Men with WHRs around 0.9, similarly, have been shown to be more healthy and fertile with less prostate cancer and testicular cancer." - wikipedia 2011

At the bottom of the page wikipedia lists all the studies that were done by qualified researchers to get this information.
In my opinion, unless you are a child, or have an extremely small frame all around, a waist of 17 inches is unhealthy and should not be glorified.
http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_laasmuI7aj1qa70eyo1_r1_500.jpg
JLH's has a very similar body to Bettie Page but with a slightly longer waist and a bigger bust line. Her body may have shifted weight a bit (as all hourglasses do) but like Jennifer Connelly the bulk of her time spent famous has been for being a charming screen entity and having a full bust. JLH does not pad either and often has gone braless and yet still looks busty-even in clothing like slip dresses. A guitar shape's bust will usually vanish visually without being accentuated. JLH wears clothing cut down at the hip as well and still has a tiny waist. She simply has too many curves going on to not be an hourglass! Being 5'2 1/2 she photographs wider than she actually is as well.
Also one more question is Victoria's secret model Candice Swaenpoel Hourglass? Cause she made to hourglass lists, however without the push up bra she is not that busty, but could be that she is slim hourglass?
http://www.kineda.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/esq-candice-swanepoel-bikini-WI-1109-lg.jpg
http://cdn.bardotbrigitte.com/wp-content/gallery/black_white/brigitte%20bardot%202.jpg
And now I see the difference between Slim hourglass such as Bardot and Candice:)
What do you think of it? Would you believe it?
I know that you said we shouldn't believe in "measurements" issued by those celebs' PR but considering these are all old/vintage artists (so the chance of them lying about their measurements is probably slimmer), are you willing to accept these numbers?
And another article discussing about Barbie dolls. I find this pretty interesting. This has nothing to do with hourglass figures but it does refer to Barbie's measurements and how people often slander it. Plus it has a picture or Brigitte Bardot in it so it piques my interest a bit (okay I admit, I was initially looking for some Brigitte Bardot pics and I eventually ended up with this LOL).

Those shots were of Bardot after her baby and her waist is still pretty small there despite the lowrise clothing not doing it justice. She personified a very tiny waisted petite hourglass figure (35C/D-20-35) on a classically trained ballerina body for the bulk of her fame so she has a place that is more than assured on any hourglass list. Once again, her figure is so perfect and unique that she's not a good example for inspiration. You can see many women in the everyday with similar figures to Scar Jo, Jane Russell and Doris Mayday but no one has looked like Bardot since Bardot. As with Jennifer Connelly who after three children is now very slim B.B. still qualifies despite having a slightly more linear figure after childbirth (happens to some extent to most hourglass figures). The list is based on the figure they had at the height of their fame.

Love your list i like how you are educating people on what's really an hourglass and not some fake.
Recently i told a girl that she's not an hourglass since she was bragging about having the measurement.
Her midsection isn't tiny compare to her Hip and Bust.
I would know an hourglass since my sister is one.
She have broad shoulder, tiny torso, tiny waist and wide hips.
Her measurement is 38 24 36 though her measurement are changing since she's losing weigh thanks to the brace which limit her diet.
Anyway this person now is attacking me about her claim which is false since she look a bit more like an rectangle.
Which my youngest sister have, she look like an hourglass yet at the end her bone structure don't meet the criteria at the end. Since she gain weight at midsection as well as other part of the body.
Anyway this is the girl pic, be warn it's nude pic.

If she somehow reading this comment i bet she will rant about this too since she already quote me from my previous comments.
I wasn't rude to the person, i was just telling her a fact and other people have mention about it earlier.
Anyway i hope you can give me your opinion since you seem to know about this stuff. I know I'm not wrong because if an hourglass were to gain weight the fat will go especially to the bun/hip and bust while their waist/midsection stay smaller. Anyway please comment back and thank you for reading this comment!
or straight more since I like everything to be clingy and not baggy.
@Ninjachic: as long as they are not low rise than all jeans are fine. Some skinnies tend not to work on wider hips and more voluptuous statuesque legs not because they don't look good but because they are not comfortable. If you have to wear low rise keep it to a few hours a week at the most.
@Nke: Hi, Jennifer Love Hewitt is not a guitar shape (don't like to use "pear") my views on JLH are addressed a half dozen comments above with lady Mara. Scarlett Johansen's recent nude pics proved she is not a guitar shaped and very busty despite many claiming she too is a guitar. JLH is in that same realm. Rarely do both actresses pad their bras or wear corsets. Being busty is not something they talk about incessantly in every interview as well. Like Monroe both are not HUGELY busty but then most hourglass figures are not. Once again, the list is based on what the figure that the model or actress has been known for during the duration of their fame.
it's ok I understand, I'll just ignored the person and let her believe what ever she believe. Though she shouldn't title herself hourglass but just "curvy". =p
I was looking through your other lists and couldn't find your Katy Perry one, which I also like to look at occasionally. Where did it go?

She's an hourglass in both photos:

Can hourglasses wear body con dresses and skirts? These are my favorite besides a-line and pencil.
Kelly Brook is NOT even slightly "bottom heavy", she's virtually symmetrical. Full hips which all hourglass figures have, don't mean "heavy".

June Wilkinson has a bust measurement of about three inches over her hips but like Uschi Digard she was still a proper hourglass because most of it is in the front. Nicole and Marisa Miler are definitely not hourglass figures (I go by unretouched photos):

I have never heard of Kenya Moore but she surely must have one the greatest bods ever. I cannot find any unretouched photos of her so I'm currently not able to give you an opinion.
Where exactly do you measure bust, waist and hip. I measure directly under the bust, underneath ribcage and low at the hipbone (where a really low rider jean would sit, a la Britney Spears' 'Slave for you Days'). I see so many alternative measurments now, for example the measure at the widest part of the hip, for me that would include the butt (which is how I think Jessica Alba, Gisele Bundchen and the like cook up their number - cos they do kinda have round butt that would up their slim hipped numbers).
Also do you actually measure the fullest part of the breast? (This I imagine also boosts Jassica & Gisele's numbers). I've also noticed some people claiming the waist is right above the navel (as in mere mm), I'm pretty sure this is too low for the waist; and that the real waist is just where the ribcage ends.
I hope this wasn't too long, I just really want to know where to measure.
I measure right across the fullest point of the breasts and the fullest part of the behind and hips, usually the halfway point. Waist will be different on everyone because of height and torso length.
Are martial arts okay to do? I do karate, and have done it my whole life except for 4years, although I did ballet as well. Are there types one shouldn't do?

@Bettiepage: I would not include Luci on this list but those are great shots.

She's bone thin with an eating disorder not a healthy person and a foul role model for young girls.

I, however, disagree with some of the women on the list, such as Scarlett and Jennifer Connelly. Scarlett is a column with big breasts and thighs but no waist definition and Jennifer Connelly seems like a ruler:

I remember you said that body type changes with age and that it true to some point, you can become skinnier or fuller, but fat distribution doesn't change so much and even if it did, waist and hips are pretty important to determine someone's figure, but those are bones (small ribcage and big pelvic/hipbones) and only change during teen years. Many fuller figured women accentuate their curves with certain clothes, but doesn't mean they are necessarily hourglasses.
What about skinny hourglasses such as Nina Dobrev?

and jennifer connelly doesnt really look like an hour glasss
