Not only one of the best Vietnam war movies, but one of the best war movies full stop.

2. Full Metal Jacket (1987)
One of the best from the late great Stanley Kubrick, has become a real cult classic, following a platoon as they train and finally go into action in Vietnam. Unmissable.

5. Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

6. Rescue Dawn (2006)
Christian Bale plays a US fighter Pilot who is shot down over Vietnam and attempts an escape. Based on a true story. Bale is excellent, a suprisingly little known movie that is well worth checking out.

7. Casualties of War (1989)
Michael J. Fox plays a soldier who is put into an awful predicament in which four of his squad mates rape a vietnamese girl. He however refuses, making his life very difficult. A film not everyone seems to enjoy, I personally really enjoyed this one, based on a true story also.

Phil_Sump's rating:

People who added this item 684  Average listal rating (453 ratings) 6.6  IMDB Rating 7.1
8. We Were Soldiers (2002)
More of a 'pure' war movie with some great action scenes based on The Battle of Ia Drang. Good film, but the war cliches are laid on a bit too thick.

Phil_Sump's rating:

People who added this item 267  Average listal rating (168 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating
9. Tigerland (2000)
Focusses on the trainnig leading up to Vietnam and a relectant recruit played by Colin Farrell, who dispite wanting nothing to do with the army, has standout leadership skills in his ability to make people follow his cause. I enjoyed this one, worth a look.

13. Hamburger Hill (1987)
Follows the story of a Platoon that helped in the taking of what was nicknamed Hamburger Hill. Nothing special in my opinion, but a solid flick.

Phil_Sump's rating:

Only the best of the Vietnam war movies that focus on the military aspects.

It's in no real order other than the obvious 'Big Four' at the top.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Have thought about adding movies such as Forest Gump and Taxi Driver that feature the war, let me know what you think.

Other Vietnam War films:

-84C MoPic
-Bat*21
-Uncommon Valor
-A Bright Shining Lie
-Flight of the Intruder
-A Rumor of War
-The Green Berets
-Under Heavy Fire
-Tunnel Rats

When I was younger I absolutely loved We Were Soldiers. I bought it on Blu-ray and watched it again after probably eight or so years. Got to tell you, wasn't anywhere near as impressed as I was initially. The battle scenes were good even though the blood looked a bit like fruit punch in spots, and Mel Gibson was great as Hal Moore, but the movie as a whole was just too needlessly sentimental and melodramatic.

I seem to remember thinking the same when I watched it back again, like you said the battle scenes are pretty decent, I'll have to check it out again soon. You seen Rescue Dawn? Thought that was pretty decent, often forgotten about

Unfortunately I haven't. I've heard many good things about it though. Then again, it IS Werner Herzog.

Forrest Gump? Even though the Vietnam War was only about a teeny bit of the movie...
