People who added this item 1297  Average listal rating (745 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.4
1. Irreversible (2002)
Disturbingly beautiful and cruel with some absolutely fantastic camera work. Backwards storytelling really messes up your emotions.

People who added this item 748  Average listal rating (401 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 8.1
2. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003)
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 4248  Average listal rating (2692 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.8
3. Lost in Translation (2003)
Peaceful but still full of suppressed tension. Depicts really wonderfully life's crossroads.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 5768  Average listal rating (3807 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.4
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Another gem from Kaufman's endlessly deep and meaningful stories. Really broke the romantic genre's mould.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 2350  Average listal rating (1408 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 8.1
5. There Will Be Blood (2007)
Without a doubt the best epic big budget Hollywood film of the noughties. A real tour de force performance by Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 1458  Average listal rating (835 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 8.1
6. Before Sunset (2004)
This and the predecessor are one of those films that possess so many outer movie elements to me personally that they are really hard to evaluate on an objective manner. That is why I won't even bother. But despite those elements this is still a wonderfully simple and intensive film with some really convincing acting by Delpy and Hawke.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 5643  Average listal rating (3776 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 8.2
7. Sin City (2005)
Beautiful, tight and generally great movie version of the graphic novels. After seeing The Spirit I am really frightened what will happen to the sequel.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 136  Average listal rating (49 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 7.1
8. The Man from London (2007)
Another great one from Tarr. Has of course some really great and beautiful long shots. Never thought that a crime movie could be done in this way.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 441  Average listal rating (222 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.7
9. Dolls (2002)
The only thing I really remember about this film was the visual greatness of it. Suppose it was beautiful on the inside too. Yeap, it must've been.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 3748  Average listal rating (2407 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.6
10. Spirited Away (2001)
Miyazaki has created such an unbelievably mysterious and lovable story and environment for this movie that I just can't understand people who don't praise this.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 1722  Average listal rating (961 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating
11. Dogville (2003)
Stripping the set to a floor with some paint on it brought this movie to a whole new level where you only really focus on the actors and their relations.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 857  Average listal rating (440 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.4
12. Synecdoche, New York (2008)
Another Kaufman, yes indeed. This movie-within-a-movie-within-a-play-within-a-life? (or something like that) is so utterly meaningful and beautiful that it breaks me even to think about it. In a good way.
upidipi's rating:

Beats The Departed to the ground. That's all I have to say.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 1524  Average listal rating (832 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating
17. Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Harsh, cruel and sometimes (oddly) just so wonderful. Especially the ending is a straight kick to the stomach and the movie is built up to it fantastically.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 1650  Average listal rating (1010 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 7.3
18. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Extremely realistic (I would suppose) view of the final days of Hitler in his bunker. Great performance by Bruno Ganz.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 2881  Average listal rating (1952 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 7.6
24. Watchmen (2009)
Never was a fan of the superhero genre but this blew me away. Brutal fight scenes and the depth of the story are only one of the few aspects that make this a great movie.
upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 2459  Average listal rating (1611 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.6

upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 50  Average listal rating (28 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.3
29. Ping-Pong (2002)

upidipi's rating:

People who added this item 7856  Average listal rating (5047 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.9
30. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the Kin... (2003)
LOTR did something that Harry Potters and other fantasy films based on books don't usually accomplish: it brought the books to life on the screen. I guess this installment represents the whole series.
upidipi's rating:

My top 50 of the noughties. I acknowledge that I have kind of a deficiency on some of the (probably) great movies - especially from outside of the U.S. - but haven't had that much time or energy or interest to sink into the films of the noughties. Some brief comments of those movies that I still can remember something insightful (hah).
