Those who worked with Sturges said one of their favorite things about him was that he was an "Actor's Director". He'd begin shooting each scene by making the actors watch him act out every part (even the women). His ability to "Do It All", the fact that he churned about 7 hits in 4 years, all while writing intelligent scripts that made the Hays folks' heads spin right off their shoulders. Sturges was the man.
CRT's rating:
Anderson combines, perhaps, better than anyone, the mixture of great characters and great atmosphere that makes film such an enjoyable medium. He also reminds the weird part of us that our flaws are what makes us beautiful and unique.
CRT's rating:
Lubitsch is Film Comedy. He is to Screwball what Hitchcock is to Suspense. He created it, he changed it, and all that came after him either would not exist or would be different people without him.
CRT's rating:
You don't become the most famous filmmaker to ever come out of the only country to have influenced film as much as the United States without being able to succeed at all genres, make your audiences question themselves and their world, and reinvent yourself over each decade.
