The Darkness - Xbox 360
One of the best first person games I have ever played. Playing as a mafia hitman who gains this dark power makes it feel like some fantasy filled weird version of Goodfellas. The powers you have truly make it feel like something out of hell. Everything from the darkness tentacles to black holes being summoned to stop enemies combined with guns make you feel unstoppable. But more than that is how great the world feels and the characters. The lead character Jackie is also a great protagonist as he is the classic criminal with a code.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - GameCube
I'm a sucker for a good Lovecraftian story or anything dealing with cosmic horror. This game delivers on that while giving us some of the most inventive gameplay I have ever played. The game is a great survival horror but throwing in the sanity meter and actually having it effect the game in interesting ways was perfect. Everything from a blurred screen, to hallucinations, or just the game straight up messing with you it made for one of the best experiences I ever had. Even something as small as having the ghosts/demons whisper everytime you enter a room was perfect.
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time [Collector's Edition]... - PlayStation 3
This really includes the whole series but "A Crack in Time" is probably my favorite. It basically felt like a Pixar movie come to life. Meaning it was funny, had a great story, had fun characters, and delivered an emotional story. Plus, just going around the galaxy with different weapons and collecting bolts is just plain fun. This series to me had the consistently best games in a video game franchise ever.
The Walking Dead - Game of the Year Edition - PlayStation 3
Also including season 2. Never before have the choices I have made in a game felt like they would have actual consequences. This truly feels like a journey you are on with Lee Everett. He is one of the best protagonists in a game ever as his back story and what he does in the games make him complex. His relationship with the girl in the game Clementine is one of the sweetest and most authentic in a game ever. The action in the game also is very exciting as you often have to make quick split second decisions. Then playing as Clementime for the second season is very different from most games and it adds a whole new level to this game. You feel much more vulnerable and it feels harder to trust people. And like the first one, the choices in the game feel like they are actually important. The final decision you have to make is one of the hardest ones I have ever had to do.
Psychonauts - Xbox
One of the funniest games I have ever played. I laughed out loud so much playing this game. Everything from the characters to the story that keeps getting weirder and weirder. It also has a very cool and original idea. You delve into the minds of the characters in the game, literally. Going inside their brains and seeing what makes them tick is so funny and provides great variety in the gameplay.
Grand Theft Auto IV - PlayStation 3
The GTA series changed the way we played games. The freedom you had and the open world aspect really forever changed games for the future. GTA IV though perfected it and gave a great story to match. The missions in the game offer a great variety and are very thrilling as well as the side things you can do. From going on dates to just stealing cars and having fun on your own.
inFAMOUS Collection - Playstation 3 - PlayStation 3
Never before has a game perfectly captured what it must feel like to be a superhero. You really feel powerful and each time you use a power it makes you feel like you are in a comic book. Your powers of electricity from doing things like striking a bolt at someone to powering up a city make you feel like a badass. It helps that the story and characters feel like something out of a comic book story.
Condemned: Criminal Origins - Xbox 360
This game seems to have been forgotten and that is a shame. It has some of the best atmosphere of a game I have ever witnessed along with fantastic first person combat. The second one was good but there is something about this one that is just wonderful. I think it's because it largely keeps it set in the real world with questioning your sanity and trying to figure out what the hell is going on. I just loved too finding clues and investigating these killers. The school level is a classic.
BioShock Infinite - PlayStation 3
This really includes the whole series but I loved the way they reinvented the BioShock series with Rapture and this one is my favorite. Having an actual character with personality really helps. This is truly one of the more immersive games I have ever played. The world of Columbia looks beautiful and feels real. I wanted to sometimes just stop and stare at what was on screen. But more than that are the themes presented in the game. Themes of religion, patriotism, war, etc. And to top it all off are the exciting battles you fight in. The powers you gain and the wide range of weapons you get help to add variety to the ways to fight enemies.
Heavy Rain - PlayStation 3
This game feels very cinematic. It feels like a great mystery thriller where everyone is racing to save a young boy from a serial killer. The story is very engrossing and the atmosphere is unlike anything I have ever played. You play four different characters and each one feels different and exciting. My favorite I think is Scott Shelby as the private investigator as his are very warm hearted and leave you with surprises. Trying to figure out who is the killer also feels different from most games and it will leave you guessing till the end.
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - PlayStation 4
This is not only one of my favorite games now but one of my favorite pieces of art in a long time. I know that might sound like hyperbole but there hasn't been something like this that has affected me in a long time. Some might call this a walking simulator but it really is an experience everyone needs to try. It reminds me of one of those BBC radio dramas and it will keep you guessing as to what is going on to the end. This is why I don't even want to leave a screenshot so everyone can discover this on their own.
Life Is Strange - PlayStation 4
I will admit that this game has flaws but the experience of playing this game is one of the best I have ever had. It has a great atmosphere and an intriguing story that keeps you playing. The gameplay mechanic of rewinding time is very cool and interesting. But ultimately it's the characters that will keep you engaged. These are complex characters and you will enjoy interacting with them. This game made me feel so many emotions and I hope this team makes more games.
The Sly Collection - PlayStation 3
This game feels like you are playing a Saturday morning cartoon and each one has gotten better as the series has gone on. There are so many wacky characters and it is so much fun to play as Sly Cooper. It is a very light hearted and humorous which is refreshing to have with a game filled in a market with dark and gritty games. Trust me when you play it you will have a good time.
The best of the Max Payne series and the best detective noir game. The first Max Payne game introduced the bullet time concept and the slow motion power to games and it totally changed gameplay mechanics. But the second one perfected it and gave the game a great story and world to use it in. It is truly a dark and messed up world in this game and every character you encounter in it feels like they belong to the world.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - PlayStation 3
This really includes the whole series but this one is probably my favorite. The best action adventure game of all time. There are times in this game that feel almost like a movie. A sequence on a train is a classic. Nathan Drake feels like a classic cinema action hero and the villains in this feel like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. But more than that, the story and the characters make the action matter.
The Suffering - PlayStation 2
My favorite horror game of all time! Of course any game set in a prison is going to be scary but it is more of the psychological horror behind it. It's the not knowing if you are really in the middle of hell or if you are losing your mind. The monsters in this game are terrifying as each one is based on a style of execution used in prisons. The game also features one of the best video game villains of all time. That being Hermes, the ghost of a former executioner who is made completely of the gas used to kill death row inmates. Your encounters with him are truly unforgettable. The gameplay also keeps you on your toes and the action is very engaging.
Beyond Good & Evil - PlayStation 2
This game may be short but it has one of the best stories in a game ever. In this game you are working with an underground rebel group to fight an oppressive government. You sneak into bases and facilities and take pictures of evidence that the government is abusing its people. It really feels like you are doing something big and important. The game looks beautiful too as the world looks like something out of a sci-fic movie and the characters look cool and original. The dynamic between your friends also is special and the lead character Jade is a great hero. It is also nice to see a woman as a lead in a game.
The Last of Us - PlayStation 3
This game more so than movies or tv, has captured what it must be like to live during a post apocalyptic world. It really feels like you are trying to survive and sometimes will barely make it out alive. Fighting the humans in the game really feels like you have to make a plan on how you will take them out. And sometimes it may come to a bloody hand to hand fight. But it is the monsters in this game that are the most memorable. Some of them may look human but when they spot you will run at you like a rapid dog. And then there are ones so mutated by a virus they resemble a fungus and can only detect you by sound but are no less terrifying. But more than the gameplay, the story and characters make it feel real. Probably one of the more emotional experiences I have had playing a game.
Red Dead Redemption - PlayStation 3
This game so perfectly captures the Western and cowboy mythology. You feel like a badass cowboy and feel like you are in a Spaghetti Western. The lead character, John Marston, is one of the best video game characters of all time. He is a classic outlaw with a code and you really feel like you are building a legend around him as you travel from America to Mexico. All the characters have their own personality and you want to spend time with each of them. You even sometimes just want to take a break from the story and just explore the world.
Mass Effect Trilogy - PlayStation 3
If I had to choose my favorite game of all time this would be it. I enjoy the gameplay of traveling and exploring space while shooting the bad guys. But what I really love is the story, the characters, and the choices the game presents to you. It really feels like the choices you make will affect your adventure and have lasting effects on the game throughout the entire trilogy. The game is also very emotional. The relationships and friendships you form trying to save the galaxy take you on such an amazing journey.
These are 20 of my favorite video games of all time. I am not a fanboy to one console so a lot of these will be from the system I played them on. I know there is no Nintendo games on here and I wish I could have more but so many of the current console games have stuck with me and I have not had a Nintendo system since a GameCube. Honorable mentions go to the God of War series and the game Sleeping Dogs.
