Top 10 Underrated Superhero/Comic Book Movies

10. Watchmen (2009)

While it was pretty well received critically, it didn't do that well at the box office. It didn't bomb, but with how good this movie is it should've done a lot better. Those facts are why it's at the bottom of the list. It's not the worst film on the list, but it was well received and did turn something of a profit.

9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

A largely forgotten movie, that many now denote as being just cheesy fare. While it does come off the way because of the outlandish costumes, I thought that this movie did a good job blending the goofiness and camp of the television series with the darker material of the comics. (Something that would be perfected in the 2003 cartoon series) The second movie was alright, but definitely veered much closer to being like the cartoon. And do I really need to say anything about the third? It did very well at the box office on original release though.

8. Darkman (1990)

It is interesting that DARKMAN is a superhero movie (well sort of) that was created specifically for the screen. He's largely a vengeful hero like the Punisher. What's interesting about it is that it is a lot like a superhero movie, but has the Raimi stamp on it with well done horror and comedy. Plus Liam Neeson is always awesome.

Critics gave it pretty good reviews and it did pretty well at the box office, but Has a really divided response with general moviegoers.

7. The Rocketeer (1991)

This film is generally well liked, got decent reviews from critics, and did make a (very) small profit at the box office. It's been lost in the annals of time nowadays, and I wish more people would check it out. It's a fun ode to the old pulps and serials from the early half of the 1900's.

6. Punisher: War Zone (2008)

I am a huge fan of the 2004 film, and was really disappointed when I heard they were going to reboot it. But I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It does resemble the comics (Particularly MAX) more than the 2004 film, and I thought Ray Stevenson did a good job in the role (although I probably do like Jane a little better). It bombed at the box office, and was smashed by critics, with a mixed audience reaction. Though I think most fans do, or would if they haven't seen it yet, enjoy it.

5. The Shadow (1994)

Skip ahead and read what I say in the next one, because I have the same sentiments about both.

4. The Phantom (1996)

No I'm not kidding. By this point you've probably lost faith in me, or are thinking about leaving. I mean even the Nostalgia Critic thrashed this film!

Seriously though, this and THE SHADOW are both very hit or miss movies. Both appearing on WORST OF lists constantly. But here's why I like them both. Both find their roots in the pulp magazines, serials, and radio shows of the 1930's and 40's. And both did their best to emulate them, and did very good jobs staying true to the material. (Sure they weren't exactly like them but how man adaptations are) Sure elements of both are over the top and silly, but that's what the old film serials were like. Neither THE SHADOW or THE PHANTOM is trying to be something more than they are. Both are pure entertainment without being stupid (like let's say TRANSFORMERS 2, seriously how does that have such a high rating here and at IMDB?) Taken for what they are, both films are a lot of fun and deserve second chances. Just don't expect THE DARK KNIGHT or SPIDER-MAN 2.

(I have this a spot higher because THE SHADOW is somewhat liked a little bit more)

3. Hulk (2003)

This film got a large backlash from fans because of it being too dark, depressing, and confusing. Surprisingly though critics liked it a ton more. I liked it's darker psychological approach. A side of the Hulk's character from the comics that not so many people think about. I do like that they took the chance to do that, and I though that the lead cast members all did very well.

As I said it did well with critics, but has been taken generally negatively with audiences. It did alright at the box office though.

TMNT made my list of comic-book inspired movies, if you'd like to check it out. Been meaning to watch Darkman for years now & have yet to get around to it. Interesting list!

Spiderman 3 and Watchmen were extremely underrated.

Watchmen was a mediocre movie, very unfortunately. Making a panel by panel screen version of the book doesn't translate into good movie by any means. The book needed a bit of interpretation, which the director had no imagination for.

Watchmen is my current favorite movie, so I'm agreed with you on that one (I love Batman Forever too). Zack Snyder brought TONS of imagination - look no further than the opening credit sequence and the intensely accurate production design - he was faithful to Moore but still brought his own vision through the minimal changes he made as well as the purely awesome visuals. But I suppose people will disagree.

I LOVED Spiderman 3. I will never understand why people hate it. I found it amazing

Respect. You put Hulk, which is the most original and groundbreaking comicbook movie. And has total respect of the charachter himself.
Hulk and Darkman are probably the best ones here

I don't get what's wrong with The Phantom.. it's pretty decent and as you said it just doesn't try to be more than it is. 4.6 stars is harsh.
Batman Forever is overrated, though.
