The Get Down (2016)

I am an unapologetic Baz Luhrman fan. Yeah he has his faults with his work, but I can't help but love the camp and sentimentality. This show brought everything I love about his work and set it in the South Bronx during the 70s as hip-hop is coming along. The cast for this was great with Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore, Herizen F. Guardiola, and Jimmy Smits being favorites. More importantly, the music was fantastic and it put a smile on my face the entire time. It is also one of the more sincere shows I have seen in a long time.

Portlandia (2011)

This season of Portlandia had one of the consistently funniest seasons of a show I have ever seen. Everything from music festivals, a theme song band, an odd OBGYN, and a feminist book store making it big brought me laughs till I cried. To put is simply, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are geniuses.

One of the best Stephen King adaptations ever. It was a very thrilling time travel series in which James Franco stops the JFK assassination. Along the way he stops a horrible murder and falls in love. The performances in this were all wonderful with Daniel Webber as Lee Harvey Oswald being a stand out. This also was one of the best Franco performances I have seen in a long time. I loved the way in which the time travel rules were incorporated into the show and it made everything all the more tense.

Bosch (2014)

With this season, Bosch consistently turns out some great stories, acting, and characters that come from classic mystery and detective shows. After the second season which was even better than the first, this season somehow surpassed season 2. With an intriguing mystery at the center and Bosch facing obstacles even from the loved ones in his life, it was an exciting season. I loved too how this show has given Lance Reddick some great stuff to work with as he is one of the most underrated actors working today. I highly recommend people give this show a shot as it is one of the more underappreciated shows on right now.

Narcos (2015)

Even better than season 1! Wagner Moura's performance as Escobar continues to be amazing and this season was no exception. Moura was able to convey his intense paranoia and fear that he is on his last leg was nothing short of Emmy worthy. The show also focused less on Boyd Holbrook and spent more time on Pedro Pascal, Escobar, and other characters which was a good move. The final episodes also showed when the tension that has building up all season finally blows up, why it makes for great tv.

So messed up yet so brilliant. Danny McBride and Walton Goggins both brought a different level of hilarity to the show. McBride with his manbaby tantrums and Goggins with a sassy, almost sociopathetic, Southern gentleman. This story went to so many unexpected places and I loved every minute of it. But it was Kimberly Hebert Gregory who stole the show. Her performance as an intelligent principal in charge who is increasingly under pressure was both funny and heartbreaking. She definitely will be winning some awards for this performance.

Longmire (2012)

After finishing this season, I finally figured out why I love this show so much. It might not be at the level of Breaking Bad or The Sopranos (not every shows needs to be that) but it's just a classic story of good vs evil. Walt feels like the classic cowboy from movies and Malachi, although complex, is a great bad guy. It's always about people trying to right wrongs while also trying to survive all that life throws at you. You can't help but root for the good people on this show and even the more morally gray characters. Nighthorse got a lot of good stuff this season and I love how much more Matthias became a prominent character. The finale this season is setting up for a hell of a final season.

Baskets (2016)

One of the best things Zach Galifinakis has done in a long time. An often hilarious but sad dramedy about a man whose life is at a place he did not expect. Many of the characters on this show at first appear to be one way but then will surprise you with their complexity. Louie Anderson's performance as the mom of Galifinakis is a great example of this. He gave her not only a hilarious streak but a vulnerability that you start to notice less and less that it's Louie Anderson. The show goes into so many bizarre territory yet it always feels real and never too much. It is going to be cool to see where the show goes to in the second season but I am very excited.

Search Party (2016)

I am a sucker for a good gumshoe, detective story and this one filled the need for a good one. It was funny, surreal, mysterious, and tense(sometimes often within one scene). The cast brought their A game all around with even the supporting actors making characters you want to spend more time with. I especially loved a private detective played by Ron Livingston who kept me guessing about his true motivations. John Early stole the show though as a narcissistic hipster, as he was able to balance the drama and comedy very well. I am hoping this gets a season 2 as I really want to see where else these characters can go.

This spin-off of Breaking Bad continues to be awesome while being its own show that expands the Breaking Bad universe. There is no weak link in the cast as each one brings something great to the table. Odenkirk slow descent into Saul Goodman as he still tries to be good is something to behold. Jonathan Banks as a cynical, jaded ex cop continues to be a badass. Michael McKeen finds the sweet spot to being sympathetic and also antagonistic. Michael Mando's understated performance as a gangster who is trying to take the fast lane to being the king is a blast to watch. But it was Rhea Seehorn's season this year. She is the heart of the show and she is able to be earnest without it seeming forced. Can't wait to see what they have planned for season 3 especially with how season 2 ended.

This season had so many great moments it's hard to choose which one was the best moment of the season. From the Battle of the Bastards, the return of The Hound, to Cersei's assault on the High Sparrows; there was so much to love. The season had so many MVPs with Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, and Peter Dinklage all giving Emmy worthy performances. The final two episodes of the this season also may have been not only the best of the series but some of the best television has to offer. Heading into the series' final two seasons, it is going to be interesting to see where they take the characters as The White Walkers draw closer and closer.

This show just keeps getting better and better. With a focus on a corporate take over of the prison and all the horrible things it brings with it, it is amazing how the show balances out all the comedic and dramatic moments. The show has a great cast with Jessica Pimentel, Lori Petty, Natasha Lyonne, Kimiko Glenn, and Uzo Aduba being some of my favorites this season. The new additions to the cast also brought a lot of focus on social issues such as rape, racism, sexism, economic class, mental illness, and sexuality. An especially emotionally devastating ending brought the season to a cliffhanger that will have lasting ramifications for the rest of the series.

The Night Of (2016)

This is a show where you could make a spin-off of any character and it would be compelling. Bill Camp, Michael K. Williams, Jeannie Berlin, Amara Karan, and Poorna Jagannathan all created characters you cared about and each one had their own motivations and seemed like real people. But this was all Riz Ahmed's and John Turturro's show. Ahmed was able to really show the development of Naz's transformation from a timid nerd into a harden, crack smoking prisoner. He was able to convey so much with just a look on his face. Turturro's performance of a sad man who feels he has a renewed chance of redemption was both charming and heart felt. The case and trial itself was compelling and I never knew what would happen. This was such a good show it was able to make a sub-plot about feet compelling.

Black Mirror (2011)

A Twilight Zone-esque show with a focus on technology and how it impacts our world. It is often hilarious but horrifying at the same time. The move to Netflix increased the budget but it didn't stop the show from being so brilliant. Every episode this season was strong with Nosedive, Playtest, San Junipero, and Hated in the Nation being my favorites. I think one of the biggest things I love about the show is I never know what to expect next. It makes the show almost like a horror movie while also providing great social commentary.

Lady Dynamite (2016)

I have been a Maria Bamford fan the instant I first saw her perform stand up. So it is no surprise that I loved this so much. The show touches on a lot including mental illness, racism, sexism, and sexuality all the while being hilarious. I think though it was the show's way of discussing mental illness that might be its greatest accomplishment. The way in which Bamford developed the story and her character was nothing short of amazing and if there is no season 2 then that will be fine as it ended on a high note. But, I am hoping for a season 2 as I want to see what else she can come up with.

Westworld (2016)

This is a show I could rewatch again and again and find something new to love each time. It was able to discuss complex things without it being alienating and it had some of the most meta commentary on entertainment I have ever seen. Its fantastic cast also certainly helped a lot. I am hoping Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and Sir Anthony Hopkins will all get the awards they deserve. Wood especially was given so much to do and she was able to perfectly perform that. This show also showed you how you do twists and surprises for a show that also make sense within the story. It will be a long wait till season 2 but it will be worth it.

One of the fastest binges I have ever done. Everything about this was charming to the cast, to the story, and to the music. Speaking of the cast, the kid actors on this show were some of the best acting I have ever seen from young actors. Millie Bobby Brown and Gaten Matarazzo especially stole the show with Brown giving the best performance sometimes with just an expression on her face. The adults as well were great with David Harbour giving a great performance as a sheriff who feels he has a shot at redemption. The show made excellent homages to 80s films while still being its own. The story had an excellent atmosphere and I was glued to the screen the entire time. Season 2 can't come fast enough.

Atlanta (2016)

Donald Glover described the show as "if David Lynch made a show about hip-hop". That is a perfect description for this show that blends surrealism with issues of identity. Glover's performance of the straight man of the show shows you how you can make characters like that interesting and funny. Brian Tyree Henrey as the introverted rap star Paper Boi was something to behold as I loved every minute he was on screen. He had some of the best facial reactions from a character ever. Keith Stanfield's Darius though might be my favorite new character of the year. He was an odd man who often is going on his own adventures and you never quite know what he is going to do next. Like a lot of shows this year, it balanced the comedy and drama well and I laughed my ass off often.

The Americans (2013)

After the revelation their daughter had at the end of season 3, I was not sure what to expect from season 4. It ended up being my favorite season of the show so far. More people should watch this show as it perfectly builds up tension at a slow pace till the perfect moment it needs to go off. Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell give some of the best performances on tv that I hope they get more Emmy love in the future. Holly Taylor was given a lot of material this year and she performed it wonderfully. The addition of Dylan Baker brought some much needed comic relief and I loved just seeing him interact with the cast. The show is heading towards its conclusion and I don't know what to expect but I am expecting it is going to be excellent.

FX was truly on a role this year and it says something that I still think about this show even though it came earlier in the year. A show that touched on everything from racism, sexism, domestic abuse, police brutality, and the American criminal justice system it couldn't have come at a better time. Filled with brilliant performance after brilliant performance practically anyone could have been nominated. But it was Sterling K. Brown, Sarah Paulson, and Courtney B. Vance who deservedly won the Emmys for their acting. Seeing Paulson be a badass who truly believes in what she is doing was nice to see and Vance's showmanship and charisma was something to behold. Brown especially stole the show for me with a subtle and heartbreaking performance. The series did a great job of making the court scenes thrilling while also perfectly showcasing just what was at stake. Everyone knows this real life crime story, but this series was able to make it exciting and one of the best things I have ever seen on tv.

This year was a great year for tv. So many great and unexpected shows that it was hard to put this list together.

I normally do a top 10, but since there were so many good shows this year I decided to make a top 20 since a lot of shows deserve a mention this year.
