Banshee (2013)

The first season of Banshee felt like a great start to a graphic novel series that you know you are going to have a blast with. The second season continued it and made for one of the best action shows in a long time. You can tell the cast has fun with it and it never gets too self indulgent. The introduction of Chayton Littlestone too brought another great antagonist to the series as another one comes to an end. But even more than that, the fight scenes and shootouts made for some real intense and cool moments.

The Affair (2014)

This feels like one of those novels everyone talks about and you just give in and read. And I mean that as a compliment. The acting of course was great and unfortunately didn't get a lot of notice like other shows, with Ruth Wilson giving a very raw and real performance. The use of the POV narrative with each story having little and big differences really did emphasize how people's interpretations of events change stories. I also like how it never excused the affair and didn't portray it as this sexy fling that most things portray it as. There were real consequences as a result of this adultery.

Mike Judge has made a lot of great stuff. He is able to tell great stories while still making you laugh your ass off. This one was no exception. I don't know a lot about Silicon Valley and the bros that operate there but you don't have to, to find it hilarious. The great scripts help but the cast especially helps to elevate it. Zach Woods and Kumail Nanjiani were my favorites but I had fun with everyone. What's even better about this show is that if you took out the comedy it would still be a great drama.

Longmire (2012)

Thank God Netflix picked this up especially after this finale. But even more than that, the characters and this story made this show very compelling. The Dog Soldier storyline with Branch was especially great giving the show an almost horror like quality to it. Bailey Chase really did help you actually kind of like Branch and enjoy his redemption. The other stories as well were just as good with showing just how satisfying long form storytelling can be.

The Bridge (2013)

Season 1 of The Bridge introduced us to two great characters with Det. Marco Ruiz and Det. Sonya Cross. Both Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger are some of the most underrated actors on tv right now. The world it created and the characters that inhabited were original and a welcome change of pace from typical cop dramas. However, the serial killer story line was not as interesting as the issues it explored with the border. Season 2 changed that and gave use two great villains for the cops to take down, Fausto Galvan and Eleanor Nacht. Ramon Franco gave a great performance of a man that Hollywood typically does a terrible job at. He gave a quirky and sense of humanity to a ruthless cartel leader. Franke Potente as Eleanor also was one of the scariest and creepiest characters in any piece of entertainment. Like Franco, she still gave a sense of humanity and pain to a character. It was such a shame that this was cancelled. Hopefully another network will pick it up.

Ray Donovan (2013)

The first season of Ray Donovan was fantastic. The second season brought a lot of great new stories and gave us a great new antagonist in the form of Hank Azaria as an ambitious FBI agent. It truly did feel like Ray and the family could be brought down at any minute. Omar Dorsey also was fun as a Suge Knight like villain this season. Wendell Pierce and Vinsessa Shaw were welcomed additions as well. This season also showed why this show is the best thing Jon Voight has done in years.

Utopia (2013)

It's such a shame this show never continued on cause it had some of the best cinematography of any show on tv. The bright colors really helped highlight the dark and violent nature of all that was under it. But more than that, the atmosphere of the show had a feeling of a great graphic novel/comic book with an overarching story of a secret evil organization. Along with great characters (Wilson was my favorite) and some truly messed up villains, this was a great show. Really hope we get another one like it soon.

I remember joking with my friends when the Dumb Starbucks story caught fire in the media, that it would be funny if it turns out to be a Nathan For You prank. Not only did it turn out to be, it also gave us one of the funniest episodes of a show I have ever seen. The other episodes were great but that one was an all time classic.

Final seasons of a show are hard to do. Wrapping up characters' journeys while also finishing the larger story is a task not a lot of shows can pull off. At first, I was curious to see how this show would do that especially with the flashbacks. But the final episode revealed just how important they were and it made all sense. Steve Buscemi made the typical anti-hero character feel different and I like how he showed the slow corruption of a politician into a gangster. The other stories wrapped up were nice with Michael Shannon especially shining as Van Alden. It was sad to see the show go but it was worth it to see the awesome ending.

Justified (2010)

There really isn't a bad season of Justified. Even with this one was less bad and just more of a disappointment after the amazing season 4. Having said that, there was still a lot of great stuff this season. Wrapping up the Detroit Mob story, Boyd's venture into Mexico, and even some of the Crowe stuff was fun. Michael Rapaport might not have been the best Big Bad of the season but people like Alan Tudyk, The Harris Brother, and Danny Crowe made for some fun and compelling villains. And still Rapaport was fun to watch tangle with Raylan,Boyd, and Dewey. The end to this season also set up some excellent stories for the final season.

The Leftovers (2014)

This show is the best example of why you should stick with a show. It was one of the most bizarre and surreal shows I have seen in a while. The show offers no easy answers and it is often times very sad. It has a very large cast with Justin Theroux going from being an asshole to someone suffering from incredible lost. But it’s Carrie Coon as a woman struggling to cope with lost and Christopher Eccleston as a minister struggling with faith that give the best performances. I hope season 2 is just as weird as season 1.

Louie (2010)

FX allowing Louie full creative control is one of the smartest things this network has done. Every episode felt like a short film and it said something about life and love. Love was a big focus of this season with Louie focusing on the love for his daughters, comedy, and for his friend Pamela. The episodes where Louie flashbacked to when he was kid and started smoking pot were great but it was the one where he tried to woe his friend Pamela and where he went on a date with his friend played by Sarah Baker that were the best.

Mad Men (2007)

Breaking up the final season into two parts seems odd, but it makes sense once you watch it. The first half continued the tradition on the show of award worthy performances, complex storylines, and movie like atmosphere. The loss of a beloved character was a heart-breaking one but it signified that the times are changing and the end of this show was truly near.

Broad City (2014)

Just hilarious. There is nothing I can really add to this. One of the few shows that made me laugh out loud each episode. Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have great chemistry and look to be the great new comedians of our generation. Just watch it and laugh. You will not be disappointed.

This season had some of the best moments of the television season. From the Battle at the Wall, to the Viper vs. The Mountain fight, and a certain death for a character that everybody had been wanting for a long time. All the actors and actresses brought their best work yet this season. Peter Dinklage was wonderful as always. But it was Maisie Williams who was the best actor this season. She gave Arya a sense of a child who has had to harden herself to stay strong but there is still a sense of innocence in her that you hope she makes it out alive. Other epic shows should take notice from this on how you create characters you care about and stories that are emotionally engaging.

Hannibal (2013)

Loved it. Loved how there was some dark humor this season. Loved Michael Pitt as Mason Verger. Loved the direction. And of course loved the performances from Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy. Some of the best directed scenes and episodes for a show of the year.

Season 1 was one of the best debuts for a show of all time. I was afraid that there would be a sophomore slump but this was even better than season 1. Much like season 1 it explored issues such as sexism, racism, mental illness, privilege, and class. It explored these issues all while still being one of the funniest shows out there. This season put a lot of the focus on Crazy Eyes, Taystee, and a new character named Vee. Vee was one of the best new tv villains this year and Lorraine Toussaint should be nominated for an Emmy for her acting. But it was Barbara Rosenblat as Miss Rosa that was the MVP this season. A small side character in season one she became one of the best characters this season and she was given one of the best endings for a character ever! Here’s hoping season 3 is just as good.

The Americans (2013)

Gets overlooked and is usually not the talk of the internet but it has always been great. Matthew Rhys gave one of the best male performances this year and his episode where he struggled with religion was some of the best acting this year. Kerri Russell continues to be one of the most badass characters on tv and I hope she doesn’t get overlooked as well. Not sure how it will be viewed in the grand scheme of tv history but I hope it is at least talked about.

Had zero expectations when I first heard about this. What I ended up seeing haunted me and kept me hooked from episode 1. The acting, the directing, the atmosphere, and the music all amazed me. Matthew McConaughey truly transformed himself into Rust Cohle and help create one of the best new characters of tv ever. Woody Harrelson was great as well at bringing some sympathy to a man that often is difficult bringing sympathy to. This is why I think people are so worried about season 2. This first season was something truly classic in my opinion and I hope there is not a sophomore slump.

Fargo (2014)

When I first heard that they were making a show based on the movie Fargo I was very worried. What we ended up getting was a show that had the spirit and tone of the film but still was its own creation. One of the things that I loved about this was the character of Molly. Seeing a good person as the hero and having the traditional anti-hero being shown as the horrible person he was, was refreshing. Alison Tolman should win the Emmy as she made one of the best heroes for tv ever. Plus, it had one of the best villains in a long time. Billy Bob Thorton’s Lorne Malvo who although we are given little back story about still created a man that is less human and more chaos personified. Martin Freeman also gave the best performance of his career as Lester Nygaard whose gradual transformation into a monster was one of the best things to watch this year. It was a classic story of good vs. evil but it felt different and brought a whole lot of new things to the table. This is why it was number 1 for me.
