Note: This movie has everything. Great acting, great direction, great story. It entertains you but also makes you think at the same time. A great achievement.

Note: It is probably the movie I have most seen in my life (20 times ? 30 times ?). I saw it when It came out. I was 15 years old and I was struck by how simple and complex it is. A great movie.

Note: The first Dogme movie was just great. No special effects, no big stars just a simple and pure movie. It was also the first time I felt nauseous after watching a movie. Not because It was bad but because it was so heavy and emotional. A great movie.

Note: I'm usually not a fan of psychopath/serial killer movies. I mean they are most of the time entertaining but they are almost never great, in my point of view. This one is the exception. It is so thoughtful and complex. An amazing picture.

Dead Man (1995)

Note: It is my favorite Johnny Depp movie. It is so poetic. The acting and direction are great. A really mesmerizing picture.

Note: It is one of my favorite movies. It's funny, dramatic and thoughtful at the same time. The craziest thing is that 12 years later, "real" TV programs are still dominating the television landscape. A real visionary work.

Note: This is the 3rd movie directed by Mathieu Kassovitz (La Haine, Gothika) and I think it is actually his best one.

It is an about an old hitman (Michel Serrault) who's getting old and wants to retire. But before that, he picks up a young boy literally from the streets and teach him his "art".

A terrific movie and one of the best movie I have ever seen.

Note: I found it was a great movie . Very good acting, very good direction, captivating story. What else do you need ? For once, the Motion Picture Academy had it right !

Note: It is a really weird movie and I find it great. I have seen quite a few movies with Rupert Everett and it is only great one. Nice story and direction. A real cult classic.

The Silence of the Lambs is a good movie but not one of my favorites. I think the Matrix is overrated. A beautiful movie with an average story (check my list Top 20 most overrated movies)

where is seven?usual suspects?
shawshank redemption?
no no no
overrated the matrix?

Usual Supects and Shawshank redemption are both great movies and almost made the list. I'm not a huge matrix fan for the following reason :

I saw it when it came out back then thinking it would be a fun SF movie. But it started much better. The visuals were great, great actions scenes and the theme was great "our world is not real, we live in an illusion". My God ! They are going get to the big question "what is the meaning of life ?" at least "What is real and what is not?".I was completely hooked and waiting what will happen next. But that was the first half... Then, came this black dude with the famous blue and red pills. And then, I got my answer. We don't live for real, actually, our brains are sucked out by machines... Come on ! Give me a break ! I still think it is visually great and indeed a milestone in this area but the story is not great at all. At least, to my taste.

We differ quite a bit on a couple of these, but seeing Dark City up here really makes me smile! Great comments. Well done.

I've heard of exactly half of these.

GoodFellas is the best film of all time, and if you include 1990 as part of the 90s decade, then it's the best of the 1990s too :)....In my opinion, of course...
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Aug 22 8:49
@rewster, 'Goodfellas' is indeed a great movie but it didn't manage to get a spot on this list.
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Aug 22 9:05
For me you forget a Masterpice: TRAINSPOTTING!
it must be on your top ten!
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Aug 22 9:08
@Time Bomb, once again, 'Trainspotting' is a very good flick but not good enough to be on this list...
Posted: 6 years, 8 months ago at Aug 22 9:09
I have added 'Goodfellas', 'Pulp Fiction' and 'The Shawshank redemption'!
Posted: 6 years, 4 months ago at Dec 21 11:28
Nice list...
I forgot about Clerks. I have to add it to my list.
Also, it seems like I'm missing a lot on The Celebration, so I'll make sure to check it out this month.
I also need to recheck Funny Games.
I never fell for the Cube trilogy tough. Hypercube really ruined it for me.
Posted: 6 years, 4 months ago at Dec 21 12:10
@the count, honestly, I haven't seen 'Cube' for years and I should definitely re-watch it to make up my mind for good.
Posted: 3 years, 10 months ago at Jun 14 11:03
But how did 'The Shawshank Redemption' not make the list? :0
Posted: 3 years, 10 months ago at Jun 14 13:55
Come on, it just missed the top 10... To each his own, right?
Posted: 3 years, 10 months ago at Jun 14 14:09
It's nice to see someone else extolling the virtues of Dead Man.

I totally agree with you about The Truman Show (1998), a movie way ahead of its time. Peter Weir has never made a bad movie. Once Were Warriors (1994) is not the best movie of the 1990's but it may be the most unforgettable.
