1. Avatar (2009)

Note : After seeing Avatar, I realized that 3D movies could be great and not a complete swindle. The story is maybe not original but still pretty entertaining and the visuals are just mind-blowing. Coming out of the movie theater, I had probably the same feeling when people just saw Star Wars back in 1977. Just blown away...

2. A Prophet (2009)

Note : It is such a masterpiece, one of the best French movies I have seen during the last decade. I was already impressed by Audiard's previous directing feature, 'De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté', but this was even better. It is one of the grimmest, dreariest jail drama I have ever seen.

3. Up (2009)

Note : Though not my Pixar favorite (Wall-E is the best), it is still a great picture. The best part, for me, was the heartbreaking introduction. So daring, so emotional, only Pixar could pull something like that.

4. In the Loop (2009)

Note : It is the most hilarious movie I have seen in years, it is that good. I'm usually really critical about comedies but this one was just a real riot, especially the first 30 minutes. It is very smart, very witty and so f*cking funny. Furthermore, I'm a huge fan of movies dealing with politics and it must be the best political satire I have ever seen. It is absolutely and definitely worth a look, especially if you like some good old British humor.

5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

Note : It is a fascinating story. I was a bit hard to follow as I'm French and I saw it in Swedish with Dutch subtitles... But still I loved it and this girl Noomi Rapace gave an very strong and amazing perfomance.

6. Up in the Air (2009)

Note : Not as good as Thank you for smoking but better than Juno (good but so overrated), Jason Reitman continues his winning streak. A great and compelling story, George Clooney on top of his game. What more do you need ?

7. District 9 (2009)

Note : A very interesting and entertaining movie. The 1st half is just great. the 2nd half is little too much action-oriented for my taste but still a very good and original picture.

8. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Note : I was curious about this movie because it is directed by Wes Anderson but also skeptical because I'm not a huge fan of Roald Dhal. No reasons to worry because it was much better than I thought it would be. It is a very original animated movie, it looks gorgeous and I just loved the dialogs. Definitely worth a look.

9. Watchmen (2009)

Note : What a trip! It must be the darkest super-hero movie, alongside The Dark Knight, of course. Honestly, it took me a while to get into the story but it was worth it. The more you get to know about the characters and their inner struggle, the more I felt captivated by the whole story. And it is a really gorgeous movie.

10. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009)

Note : I think I still prefer Ferrara's movie as it was more intense, and even more awesome but this is easily one of the best remakes ever made. It is some rather dark and completely amoral material and the mainstream audience probably won't dig it but I really loved it.

Avatar would perhaps make it into a top 50 from 2009 for me. Otherwise, intersting choices. Coraline nearly made it into mine.

Haven't yet seen "Avatar" (can you believe it?) And was disappointed with "District 9" but feel like maybe I should give it another shot someday.

Still don't know why "Up" got SOOO much hype. Thought it peaked real early and just wasn't as move by it as most I guess. Liked "Public Enemies" but really wanted to like it more. Some great things going on with the camera though.

Enjoyed "Coraline" quite a bit but didn't enjoy seeing it in 3D. Not my thing. Recognize "Informant!" as a strong film, but not really my thing. Loved "Up in the Air" and will have to check out #'s 8 and 9.

Indeed, I'm quite surprised that you've not seen Avatar yet. The only movie worth watching in 3D.
I liked District 9 but it is still kind of overrated (on Imdb, it is on the top 250 ! No way...)
I think Wall-E is better than UP which still is very special animated movie.
I liked Coraline (without 3D, not my thing either!) but I thought Nightmare for Christmas was much better.
With The Informant, I had the same thing as for Salt. I saw that Roger Ebert loved the movie so I saw it but I was rather underwhelmed eventually...

I like Avatar, but the fact that the story is basically an updated version of Aliens knocks it down the list for me. And I liked Up also, but Pixar has done much better in my opinion. Surprised to see Christmas Carol up there...didn't figure it'd be worth watching since it's been made into a movie so many times over.

I liked mostly the visuals from Christmas Carol and the rating is only 07/10 meaning that in a couple of months, it should be knocked off the list.
I dig also your comment about avatar. The story is nothing revolutionary but I was really blown away by the visuals.

Thanks! Up in the Air is very good. I'm glad you found room for District 9, which I also really like.

I see this list has changed since I voted for it. Too bad I can't vote again! Very nice to see some of my favorites on here now, and I'll add your name to the list of recommendations behind The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

How come i missed this list?

I respect your opinion on Avatar (especially). You know what, i had the exact feeling but instead of Star Wars, i had 2001 in mind, so we are pretty much on the same ground!

Anyways, great selections!

I hate that so many people say avatar is not good! Who paid for the tickets!? How did it became one the most profitable movies of all times!?

Great list and I appreciate the courage to add some of the "apparently" most hated movies at Listal.

@Rufus, you have a good point there! In my opinion, 'Avatar' is a milestone in movie history.
