Note : I found it was a great movie . Very good acting, very good direction, captivating story. What else do you need ? For once, the Academy had it right !

Note : Paul Thomas Andeson is one of the best directors around and this is his best movie so far. Fascinating characters and stories, amazing directing, all actors give very good perfomances (Tom Cruise is maybe insane but definitely can act). I loved it.

Note : This is the last movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and many people think it is his least succesfull one.

I think it is a great movie. As usual, you have the incredible Kubrick direction, completely flawless with obsessive attention to the details. On the other hand, you have this fascinating story which almost works like a captivating Hollywood thriller. I say "almost" because at the end, there is no big chase, rooftop final battle or big twist "He is the one! He did it !". There is actually no real answer and I think many people were really frustrated by that because at the end of the movie, everything is supposed to be solved. I think it was just brilliant.

Note : Hilary Swank gives here her breakthrough perfomance. This story is really heartbreaking and the directing is very good as well. Definitely worth a look.

Note : I always found David Cronenberg was one the most interesting directors around. With this movie, it didn't disappoint me. Half creepy, half intellectual but always challenging.

Note : I remember when I saw it in the movie theater. I was in the USA on holiday and went with some friends to see it. I have never heard of it so I was completely "hypefree". I found it really clever and scary. Once again, the proof that, to scare people, you don't have to show close-ups of bloody killings and/or mutilations. The less you see, the more you get scared.

The Insider (1999)

Note : I really like Michael Mann and try to watch all his movies. This one is one of his best. The perfomances with Al Pacino and Russell Crowe are top and the story is very interesting. Definitely worth a look.

Note : OOOOOhhhhh.... This movie is really heavy. You should be aware of this before watching it. The perfomances are very good and so is the directing. An heartbreaking story.

Note : I don't know which one I prefer between this one and the first Toy Story. Anyway, it is definitely one of the best sequel ever made, even among not animated movies. Definitely worth a look and a must see for any fan of animated movies.

Ha, this was actually the list I was looking for but I had to vote on a few others on my travels. Nice to see eXistenZ listed.

Good looking list! I'm in the vast minority in that I didn't care for 'American Beauty' at all. Also I run hot and cold on Kubrick and just couldn't get excited about 'Eyes Wide Shut'.

Nice to see 'Blair Witch Project' bravely praised here...it's one I saw in the theatre but never since...

Oddly never saw 'Boys Don't Cry' and been meaning to get around to 'eXistenZ' for a while now...thanks for the reminder!

Very nice! Blair Witch I found to be overrated, and Boys Don't Cry I've never seen since the ending was spoiled for me.

Cool to see The War Zone get some love...it's definitely not for everyone.

American Beauty, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, The Blair Witch Project and The War Zone are ALL among my favorite films - it's awesome to see them all here, particularly a movie as great and devastating as The War Zone, which not many people have seen.

1999 was one of the best years in motion picture history.

Very good year for movies. I've seen 4 of these. I really need to see Fight Club.

Interesting list. I'm not sure how many of these would make my own for the year. I can think of 5 right now, that I don't see here, that would make my top 10 best of the year. ;)

@Fortunato, which one ? (I bet 'The Matrix')
Posted: 5 years, 7 months ago at Feb 12 18:45
@Johan: The Green Mile, perhaps?

@Happy Vader, indeed, my friend, indeed

@Johan: My top 10 would most likely be:

The 13th Warrior. The Mummy. The Sixth Sense. Arlington Road. The Boondock Saints. Jakob the Liar. Mystery, Alaska. The Ninth Gate. Stigmata. (and yes) The Matrix.

I absolutely loved Deep Blue Sea, as well but...;)
