1. The Celebration (1998)

Note : The first Dogme movie was just great. No special effects, no big stars just a simple and pure movie. It was also the first time I felt nauseous after watching a movie. Not because it was bad but because it was so heavy and emotional. A great movie.

2. Dark City (1998)

Note : This is one of the best Science Fiction movie ever. It has great visuals and a mesmerizing story. If you like to think and being challenged when watching a movie, this is for you.

3. The Truman Show (1998)

Note : It is one of may favorite movie. It's funny, dramatic and thoughtful at the same time. Of the most crazy thing is that 12 years later, "real" TV programs are still dominating the television landscape. A real visionary work.

4. The Thin Red Line (1998)

Note : There is amazing cast with a breathrough perfomance by James Caviezel. The directing is great and the story, though maybe not really original, still interesting enough. Terrence Malick was back with a bang!

5. Black Cat, White Cat (1998)

Note : The last great picture directed by Emir Kusturica. I'm pretty sure most of the listal members have no idea who this guy is... You should know that he directed some of the best movies of the 90's (Black cat White cat, Underground, Arizona dream) and the 80's (The time of the gypsies, When Father Was Away on Business) and won twice the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival. Anyway, this movie is a big chaos with a great directing and the story which goes nowhere. I loved it.

6. Ringu (1998)

Note : I was so scared by this one... One of my favorite horror movies. It's a shame that the remake is much more famous than this one. A fascinating story and very competent directing. A must see for horror fans.

7. Happiness (1998)

Note : Todd Solondz's movies are an acquired taste and this movie is no exception. There is no likable characters and they all do despicable things. So why watch this movie then ?!? Because messed up people are much interesting and fascinating than all the perfect people that you usually see in you standard Hollywood production. If you dare, definitely worth a look.

8. Primary Colors (1998)

Note : I really liked this movie a lot. I think it was made just before the Monicagate (maybe I'm wrong!) so it was actually extremely sharp ! It is a very interesting movie about politics (a topic I find riveting). The cast is very good aswell.

9. Elizabeth (1998)

Note : Cate Blanchett gives here her a breakthrough perfomance. It was the start of a stunning career (the next Meryl Streep?). The movie looks stunning and the story is very interesting as well.

10. Following (1998)

Note : Even though it might not be as impressive as his latter work, it still a rather amazing directing debut. Especially when you realize that Nolan made this movie in the week-ends with no budget with a bunch of friends who had to pretend they could act. Eventually, it was the start of the career of the most brilliant directors at work nowadays.

Great list! Primary Colors is one I wouldn't have expected, though I never did see it. Black Cat, White Cat and The Celebration I haven't even heard of! Guess I better queue 'em up!
