1. Funny Games (1997)

Note : I'm usually not a fan of psychopath/serial killer movies. I mean they are most of the time entertaining but they are almost never great, in my point of view. This one is the exception. It is so thoughtful and complex. An amazing picture.

2. Assassin(s)

Note : This is the 3rd movie directed by Mathieu Kassovitz (La Haine, Gothika) and I think it is actually his best one. It is about an old hitman (Michel Serrault) who's getting old and wants to retire. But before that, he decides a young boy literally from the streets and teach him his "art". A terrific movie and one of the best movie I have ever seen.

3. Cube (1997)

Note : I found the story really entertaining and challenging too. It is also really well done. The best thing is actually that, at the end, you don't get any simple answers and you can think about it and try to sort it out as long as you want.

4. Gattaca (1997)

Note : Back then, Jude Law was practically unknown and this movie launched his career. A part from that, I think the story, the actors and the directing are all amazing. A great achievement and it's pity this movie is now pretty forgotten.

5. The Game (1997)

Note : David Fincher had directed this movie after Seven and it wasn't so well received. I think it is actually beter than Seven. You still have the same great Fincher visuals but I think there is so much depth in this story, dealing with what people needs in their life when they have reached all their goals or how far are we ready to go to be entertained.
Fight Club is my favorite Fincher movie but this one is great as well.

6. She's So Lovely (1997)

Note : Written by John Cassavetes and directed by his son, Nick Cassavetes, The cast includes Sean Penn, Robin Wright and John Travolta. I believe it is already a good start ! I have seen all Nick Cassavetes movies (expect My sister's keeper) and this one is his best. A great love story about screwed up people.

7. Boogie Nights (1997)

Note : Before Magnolia and There will be blood, it is with this picture that Paul Thomas Anderson started to get some deserved attention. Out of a topic which has produced some many lame comedies, he made a funny and entertaining movie. Great perfomances from the whole cast (yes, Mark Wahlberg can act...). Definitely worth a look.

8. Wag the Dog (1997)

Note : Again, an underrated movie about Politics. It is, I believe, one of the last great movie with Robert de Niro and Dustin Hoffman. It is really funny too with some very nice dark humor.

9. Nil by Mouth (1997)

Note : Many movie fans recognize Gary Oldman's talent as actor but only a few of them know that he has actually also directed a movie and a very good one on top of that. A very bleak picture but definitely worth a look.

10. Starship Troopers (1997)

Note : This is one is one the last movie directed by Paul Verhoeven before getting kick out of Hollywood (the last one was "Hollow man"). Unfortunately, it wasn't a success and it didn't help saving the damages caused by "Showgirls".

I think it is shame. It is really entertaining with good action scenes and nice special effects. A big SF show. On the other hand,it is also a big satire about how war is actually completely stupid and meaningless. Finally, as usual in a Verhoeven movie, you have this sexual tension between the characters which gives you the feeling that, at any moment, they're going to rip their clothes off and starting humping each other.

Nice list! I'm on 1997 myself, but halfway thru making the list I'm starting to feel I haven't yet seen enough films (enough good ones anyway) to complete it. Though I do see three or four here that would probably make mine.

I seem to be in the minority around here, but I found Starship Troopers to be completely worthless. Ah well. I loved Cube the first time I saw it, but a few re-watches lessened my appreciation for it a bit. Gattaca's a good one too...haven't seen it in ages.
