Honorable Mentions

Games I played in 2010 that I thought were fun but not enough to scratch the top ten.

Dragon Quest's 9th entry was a pretty solid one though to be honest, I was hoping for it to come to the home consoles much like the 8th one was. It is still the same good old Dragon Quest game though it feels a lot more simpler than usual as it has more focus in its multiplayer. Don't get me wrong, the multiplayer is quite good but it could've gotten a bit more deeper with its RPG elements.

At the end of Assassin's Creed 2, I knew that a numero tres in the series won't happen for a while so it wasn't a surprise when Brotherhood was released. It was still the same awsomeness that Assassin's Creed 2 was but it should have been more of a DLC than a full released, maybe episodic. Multiplayer is quite good but it doesn't really hold your interest for long.

Here's a short story: A guy plays Civilization V for the first time. Didn't stop playing for 15 hours, even when he finished the map. He started hallucinating from lack of sleep. If you're wondering, that guy was me. Civilization V completely consumed me from the first time I built my first city at the edge of the sea with Queen Elizabeth being my avatar. While a lot more simplified and accessible in comparison to the other Civilization games, V still retains the addictiveness that the series is known for.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - PlayStation 3

Let me briefly summarise my feelings on Call of Duty today. I don't really care for it. It's kind of pointless to bitch about its over-saturation and immense success so I just ignore most of the time. There are some striking differences that I notice for each game. One set is the Modern Warfare series developed by Infinity Ward, which is just the typical modern military shooter, nothing special. The other set is the historical set developed by Treyarch, which involves over the top exaggerations of history and it feels aware of its ridiculousness. Guess which set I would pick? Black Ops is part of the historical set by Treyarch and this is possibly my favourite, if not, one of my favourite games in the COD franchise. Not only is the campaign ridiculously enjoyable, the multiplayer is a lot more balanced and the improved zombie mode and the extra arcade twin stick shooter actually makes up for its high price tag.

Fallout: New Vegas - Xbox 360

The sort of sequel of Fallout 3, New Vegas is a lot more accessible in terms of its overall gameplay and how it told the story. It is practically the same awesomeness that is Fallout 3 but it is bogged down by all those ridiculous bugs and glitches and infrequent framerate drops and freezes, which gives an impression that this was rushed out.

Limbo - Xbox 360 Live Arcade

2010 was the year that I started shifting to indie games as they were becoming more and more relevant thanks to the popularity of Xbox Live and Steam. Limbo is a very fascinating game as it gives a lot of impressions when going through the whole game. The minimalistic style of just black and white with little to no music gives it an eerie tone and atmosphere and it effectively catches you off guard whenever you die in game. The gameplay has very simple but still interesting puzzles though the entirety of the game is a bit too short.

Bayonetta - Xbox 360

Campy doesn't even described what Bayonetta is. Coming from the director of the very first Devil May Cry, Bayonetta contains over the top action set pieces, ridiculous character and enemy designs and a very campy and self indulgent story and I couldn't have it any other way. The game shines through its very deep combat gameplay as each move at a press of a button flows very well from one another and the platforming and ability uses are, to an extent, a lot better than the Devil May Cry games.

DJ Hero 2 - PlayStation 3

It is actually a huge shame that this game didn't do well as expected in terms of sale because this is one of the best rhythm games I have ever played. It completely improves upon the surprisingly intuitive, smooth learning curved controls and gameplay elements that the first DJ Hero introduced and with a predominantly more hip-hop soundtrack, kudos to the member of the development team that picked the songs, it is a very fun game, especially in parties and gatherings. This game and the first game needs more recognition than it does now.

Cave Story - WiiWare

The daddy of the modern indie games and rightfully so. Cave Story had me surprised by how emotionally involving its storyline and characters were and an addition to that, they were bunny rabbits. Even with its pixelated look, a game this left field can evoke more emotions than many big budget games today. The gameplay is a throwback to the days of the NES and brings along the old school charm and difficulty of it.

While I do enjoy some multiplayer from time to time with StarCraft, I never really got into it, simply because I absolutely suck at multiplayer. What I do enjoy in StarCraft is its story and characters and it is all the same with StarCraft II. The gameplay is still the deep and addicting strategy game that requires less than a second thought decisions when engaging an enemy but with many streamlined improvements just to make the game a bit more accessible. The graphics are quite incredible and its hard not to enjoy its cinematics as Blizzard always triumphs in that department.

Just Cause 2 - Xbox 360

Just Cause 2 is probably the closest thing to a video game adaptation of every single action film ever made. While it completely lacks in story in terms of length and depth, Just Cause 2 epitomises just what a sandbox games is; do whatever the hell you want and have fun. There is so many things to do in Just Cause 2's exceptionally huge island map and thanks to the god like object known as a grapple, it gives many moments of destruction and shot by shot action pieces and explosions that will make Michael Bay look like an amateur.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - PlayStation 3

There were two shooter to choose from in 2010. Both of them were very good but one just stood out to me in terms of single player and multiplayer. Bad Company 2 is probably one of my favourite military shooters ever and it is an exception in its sub-genre. It succeeds in its single player because of its dark but subtly humorous story and likeable and hilarious cast of characters as well as its open level design and impressive looking environments. You were never really following one person or one person at a time but a group of down to earth, underdog soldiers who are just fun to be with and it never felt too scripted. It succeeds in multiplayer because of its intricate upgrade system, balanced weapons, vehicles and destructible environments courtesy of the Frostbite 1.5 engine. Please let there be a Bad Company 3.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Nintendo Wii

It's never really a surprise when a brand new game from the Super Mario series comes in and be awesome. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is pretty awesome as it continues with what the first Galaxy offered. Ingenious level designs, tight controls, beautiful visuals and an amazing orchestral soundtrack with a bit of a difficulty tweak. Nothing much to say but hey, it's a Super Mario game, how can you go wrong?

Super Meat Boy - Xbox 360 Live Arcade

There are a certain number of games that were designed to make you completely frustrated and insane. Super Meat Boy is one of them. You will die in this game. A lot. And you will scream and growl in frustration. It doesn't help by the fact that you die in one measly hit as the character is practically made of meat. Even with the unforgiving difficulty, it is remedied by its pitch perfect controls, a demented sense of humour and brilliant level designs. Even if you will die a lot, completing a level becomes such a proud achievement, even if you died like 100+ times trying and trying again. I'd say the difficulty also helps with the enjoyment of the game as it taunts you to stop being such a pussy and beat this level.

Red Dead Redemption - PlayStation 3

Before Redemption, the best western themed game I've played was probably Wild Guns on the SNES. Well, that's not the case any more as Red Dead Redemption is the definitive western themed video game out now. You could call it Grand Theft Auto with horses but its overall atmosphere and presentation of the old west America and authentic gameplay aesthetics gives it a league of its own. There are some control problems such as the horse riding being a bit too tight or the finicky layout of your weapons but this game is just chock full of variety when it comes to its gameplay along with an incredible multiplayer mode. The story is in my opinion, one of the finest Rockstar has ever written and stays true to the old western films back in the mid 20th century.

Heavy Rain - PlayStation 3

Heavy Rain earns its spot on this list for purely having one of the best narratives I've ever experienced in a video game. It is actually a good thing that Heavy Rain has an excellent story as if it didn't, I wouldn't even put it on this list as its gameplay is an overall mixed bag. The quick time events are quite interesting but alas, they're still quick time events, one of the more annoying control schemes that is ever more predominant in gaming today. At least it does give the game's set pieces a sense of tension since it forces you to do the right movement. Speaking of movement, the character controls sucks absolute ass, why the hell do you have to hold R2 just to walk? With the gameplay out of the way, lets talk about the story. The story overall is a dark, compelling and riveting story about the extent of sacrifice. Compelled is the key word as you are compelled to save your character's son and will test your resolve on whether you should do the most dangerous and horrific things for the sake of your loved ones. There are some plot holes here and there based on your decisions but the compelling overarching plot makes you easily forget and its multiple endings and outcomes gives motives to replay the whole game. The characters are very interesting and quite complex though the voice acting can get a bit iffy now and then. As well as the story, the game is augmented by its atmosphere and very impressive graphics.

Mass Effect 2 - Xbox 360

Absolute freakin' masterpiece. I rarely throw that word around but that's what Mass Effect 2 is to me. An early January release, for the rest of the 2010 year, no game in my opinion has ever topped it. Mass Effect 2 is one of the finest examples of how to improve in a sequel as it takes Mass Effect's overall story and gameplay and just flat out improves it in every aspect. Overall, it does shine more in how it executes its story rather than its gameplay as the RPG elements were a bit stripped down. Nevertheless, this game is just pure awesomeness just to sum it up as there are so many great things to say about this game. Maybe I could praise how mature and well written the story is, how unforgettable the characters are and because of the different outcomes, gives you a motive to replay the game. I could also point out the incredible production values from its countless number of dialogue choices to its excellent voice cast and acting. I could also rave about how the game is just gorgeous to look at and perfectly captures a sci-fi atmosphere with HR Giger Blade Runner like art designs, very inspired environments, appropriate music queues and an overall futuristic soundtrack. I absolutely freakin' love this game with a burning passion and all my ravings still can't justify why this is the game I enjoyed playing the most in 2010 and one of the greatest game I have ever experienced.

These are games that I have personally played. Games had to be released in 2010 in Europe. Does not include remakes or late releases from the previous year.
