Too Young For Heart Attacks: Don't show your kids

1. Pet Sematary (1989)
Just imagine being five years old and seeing this movie for the first time. Dead kids, freaky flashbacks, toddlers killing adults... I was both shaken and stirred after seeing this movie. Although it does nothing to me now, this movie will always have a special place in my internal fear cabinet.

2. Scanners (1981)
I couldn't have been more than five or six when I saw Scanners. Kids are going to start to think that Jimmy Kline sitting next to them in class can blow their damn head off with a single thought.

People who added this item 117  Average listal rating (73 ratings) 5.8  IMDB Rating 5.6
3. The Gate (1987)
The Gate is pretty low scare value stuff as an adult. But as a six year old? The stuff of utter nightmares! Hands under the bed, pits full of little clay monsters, dead people in the walls, monsters that pretend to be parents... It also seemed more scary because all the protagonists are children. There wasn't some big adult around to save the day. Yeah, I was traumatized.

While you watch this clip, imagine how you would feel if this were happening to you at this kid's age.

4. The Thing (1982)
This movie could take the scary bone of a kid and give it a double compound fracture. I was about seven when I watched this, and it made my skin crawl. It also convinced me that anyone acting strange was the thing, for weeks.

5. Altered States (1980)
This movie is strange. Times that by a thousand when you're six, and you don't know what the hell is going on from beginning to end. Not gross or scary, as much as confusing and occasionally disturbing for a fragile young mind.

6. The Fly (1986)
I was around seven when I watched this movie for the first time. Watching Jeff Goldblum turn into the fly made my skin crawl. When his teeth and fingernails started coming off... I think I'm still bothered by that to this day. Not painful at all for adults, but pure horror for kids.

7. Alien (1979)
I watched this movie with my father on HBO when I was really young, maybe four. And an Alien ripped out of a guy. An ALIEN RIPPED Out of a GUY'S BODY!

When I saw that spidery thing slinking around the ship, I pretty much assumed there had to be at least one living in my bedroom closet. Waiting. Just waiting... I felt that way for a couple of years.

8. Play Misty for Me (1971)
This movie is really not a horror movie. Actually, it's a pretty decent relationship thriller starring and directed by Clint Eastwood.

But when you're no more than 5, it's a terrifying experience in being extremely afraid. There's screaming, blood, knife attacks... stuff kids just aren't ready for.

9. Marathon Man (1976)
Marathon Man is a pretty good story with some great actors. Roy Scheider, Dustin Hoffman, and the great Laurence Olivier.

Yeah, kids don't care about that stuff. Neither did I, when I was all but six and watching stabbing, torture, more torture, and shootings.

10. Flowers in the Attic (1987)
Flowers in the Attic is a story that revolves around kids that get locked up in the attic, and are systematically mistreated by their mother and grandmother. That's not the kind of thing you want to see when you completely rely on your parents for daily living. I was terrified of the grandmother, played by Louise Fletcher.

11. The Twilight Zone (1959)
Twilight Zone is a show that can be enjoyed in adulthood for it's interesting stories, good writing, and creepy revelations. However, as a kid it's the stuff of sleepless nights, and jumping at shadows.

You remember that episode when that crazy kid was able to turn that dude's head into a jack in the box? Yeah, good luck thinking of anything else when you're only seven years old.

12. Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)
The Twilight Zone movie was pretty interesting. Although it borrowed from plots of previous episodes of the show, it was still a fun watch. It wasn't as fun when I was seven, getting assaulted by the downer ending of each segment.

13. Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)
Nine years old is not the right age to be watching "The Wall."

I repeat: Nine years old is not the right age to be watching "The Wall."

I was thinking about this movie in school for days during the lessons, unable to think of anything else. Pretty much everything that happened in this movie had an adverse effect on my fragile mind.

Although it's entirely possible that watching this and the other movies in this list is why I eventually had a strong desire to be creative. I can't say for sure.
Joseph Grey's rating:

One of the joys of having HBO as a kid is being able to walk downstairs and watch movies when you can't sleep. Unfortunately, after seeing these movies, I didn't sleep for a long time.

I watched all of these movies and shows when I was under the age of 10. I was either scared, scarred, or disturbed for days after seeing these movies the first time.

For that reason, I suggest you not show these to your kids, lest they suffer the same fate I did.

Not all movies are horror movies. Some are just plain weird, and some left me feeling depressed.

That crazy woman from Pet Sematary calling "Rachel" and leaning towards the frame still creeps the shit outta me.

Awesome list.

and that kid when he slices the ankles and bites the throat of Herman Munster is outta control.
Posted: 10 months, 2 weeks ago at Jul 10 4:10
Yeah, I was terrified of the Pet Sematary Kid. I can still hear the little patter sound of his running feet... in my nightmares.

It's sad that the Coneheads were my childhood fear.

Yep, these would definitely leave some emotional scars at an early age. I know I watched my share of Twilight Zone episodes as a kid, as well as the movie when I was 6 or so. And as a result I had some pretty crazy dreams...thanks, dad!

Dig the notes on these. And as Marvo said above, hearing "Raaaachel...Raaachel!" still creeps me out.

I had the same thing with 'The Twilight Zone'... As a kid, I would watch it very often but every single time, I was scared sh*tless and I was terrified for days...

The only film/show I've seen from this list is Alien, and I was 15 at the time so I didn't find it scary, but yes I can imagine being like, 5.. I'll avoid the rest for a while even though I'm 16.. :D Great list, thanks for the warnings!
Posted: 10 months, 1 week ago at Jul 11 14:56
Yeah, who thought Dan Akroyd could ever be scary?
Posted: 10 months, 1 week ago at Jul 12 16:19
The only one that made me jump was "Alien" and I was a teen when that came out. Did you ever watch the original "Amityville Horror?" That was another that made me jump.

Fantastic Job. FANTASTIC. And watching Flowers in The Attic was very depressing. Agreed! But nothing shook me like Pink Floyd's : The Wall. Those faces on the "KIDS." Yikes. I mean, masterpiece of an album but the movie was not for me. Another Brick In The Wall of my mind! ;) Those images will always be remembered! Good job! This is basically my list but I would take out the few in here I didn't see as a kid and put in 'Stephen King's IT' and 'Donnie Darko'. It's funny cause Donnie Darko is a favorite now as a young adult. :)

Great list! I enjoyed reading about your experiences, I can somewhat relate, but it made me realise I was fairly protected when it came to these kinds of movies when I was little
