Humans are preoccupied and fascinated with our own mortality. There are thousands of movies titles that are linked with the word 'die,' 'death,' 'dead,' or 'kill.' These are a few of the best sounding titles.

It's hard to top a title like Die Hard. It says nothing and everything all at once.

2. The Evil Dead (1981)
The Evil Dead: The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror

If a title like that doesn't get you exited, you're already dead.

Many of these great movie titles were great book titles first. This is just one example.

People who added this item 354  Average listal rating (184 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 6.6
7. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
This sounds like an English translated title of a Japanese comic book. But alas, it's a 1960's classic about mean girls and violence. It's really hard to imagine a better title to go along with this movie.

So many titles are done this way. It seems to work pretty well, at least in the English language.
People who added this item 59  Average listal rating (33 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating 6.2
10. The Dogs of War (1980)
The Dogs of War
I'd be interested to know how many Shakespearean snippets became movie titles. In the case of this movie title, it was Julius Ceasar Act 3, Scene 1 line 273.
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 579  Average listal rating (350 ratings) 6.6  IMDB Rating 6.9
11. The Color of Money (1986)

People who added this item 523  Average listal rating (337 ratings) 5.9  IMDB Rating 6.5
23. Revenge of the Nerds (1984)

24. Masters of the Universe (1987)
Masters of the Universe
This is the movie based on the popular cartoon and toy line. The production company behind this movie smartly removed the 'He-Man' preface in their movie, 'Masters of the Universe'.

Two Word Titles

People who added this item 7512  Average listal rating (4892 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.9
25. Fight Club (1999)
Fight Club
Simple, straightforward and informative. You couldn't ask for more out of a title.

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 1375  Average listal rating (868 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.9
26. True Romance (1993)
True Romance
I've heard of a lot of different types of romance. But true romance? If you want to get cynical, it's practically an oxymoron. If you want to get simple, it just sounds cool.

People who added this item 72  Average listal rating (32 ratings) 6.3  IMDB Rating 6.1
27. Permanent Midnight (1998)

28. Permanent Vacation (1980)

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 4201  Average listal rating (2796 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.4
29. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Reservoir Dogs
Is it just me, or does Quentin Tarantino like two word titles? This movie has nothing to do with dogs, or reservoirs. And yet, it still fits somehow.
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 6814  Average listal rating (4430 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating
30. Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction
The beginning of this movie has a dictionary definition of the word 'pulp,' and the word 'fiction.' It still doesn't explain why it's the title of the movie, but doesn't make it any less awesome.

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 6654  Average listal rating (4359 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 8.2
31. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

32. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Ba... (1980)
Star Wars
Yes, I realize that each of the Star Wars movies have their own separate title. But they're still called Star Wars movies, right?

Something so simple as 'Star Wars' can tell you everything you need to know. Some shit's gonna happen in space. And you're gonna like it.

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 291  Average listal rating (168 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating
33. Near Dark (1987)

People who added this item 5637  Average listal rating (3856 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating 7.4
34. X-Men (2000)
X-Men
Based on the popular Marvel Comics series, this title tells you exactly what it's about.

Sort of. There's women too.
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 227  Average listal rating (136 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.2
35. Vanishing Point (1971)
Vanishing Point
Vanishing point has to do with perspective in drawing and the point at which parallel lines appear to converge. In the case of the movie, I think its purpose was to sound badass.

People who added this item 87  Average listal rating (64 ratings) 4.9  IMDB Rating 5.3
36. Terminal Velocity (1994)
Terminal Velocity
With a title this cool, you'd think the movie would be just as cool. But not even a cool title, Charlie Sheen, or Nastassja Kinski could keep this movie from going down at 9.81 meters per second²
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 2247  Average listal rating (1425 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating 6.6
37. Dirty Dancing (1987)
Dirty Dancing

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 256  Average listal rating (178 ratings) 6.2  IMDB Rating 6.1
38. Red Dawn (1984)
Red Dawn
Kind of a double meaning going on with the title of this movie.
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 975  Average listal rating (684 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating
39. Point Break (1991)
Point Break
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 302  Average listal rating (207 ratings) 5.9  IMDB Rating 6.1
40. Road House (1989)
Road House
If you're counting, that's four two word titles in a row starring Patrick Swayze. How many other two word titles was he in?
Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 3392  Average listal rating (2228 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.3
41. Blade Runner (1982)
Blade Runner
The title of Philip K. Dick's novel that inspired this film is 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'

Very witty. And it's a great book. But Blade Runner just sounds so much cooler than anything else that could have been used.

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 226  Average listal rating (141 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 7.8

Joseph Grey's rating:

People who added this item 331  Average listal rating (209 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating 6.5
43. The Howling (1981)
The Howling
It's no secret what this movie is about. And that's what makes the title so great. Truth in advertising.

People who added this item 5  Average listal rating (2 ratings) 2  IMDB Rating 4.4
44. Woodchipper Massacre (1988)

People who added this item 3764  Average listal rating (2541 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 8.6
49. American History X (1998)
American History X
As you may have noticed, adding X to the title of your movie makes it sound cooler.

People who added this item 780  Average listal rating (522 ratings) 6.4  IMDB Rating 6.8
50. The X Files: Fight the Future (1998)
The X Files
I suppose you could call this one 'Fight The Future' instead, since that's technically the movie title. Fight the Future sounds pretty cool too.
Joseph Grey's rating:

I had planned on making this list months ago, but became distracted when I started making all those TV lists.

These are some of the most direct, cool sounding or ominous movie titles. Suggestions are welcome, but I'll stop before I get to 100 items.

Agreed! Some titles win for describing the whole movie in a word or two. Others win based on the awesome name alone. Solid list!
