Most Wanted

Yes, the Star Wars films are all on Blu-ray, but I want a proper remaster of the original unaltered versions of the original trilogy, not the repulsive bastardisations. I have the Blu-ray set with the molested versions, but I cannot bring myself to watch them. I stick with bootlegs of the original unaltered versions.

Chatter of the original versions reaching Blu do pop up now and again. With Disney now controlling the saga, they would see big dollar-signs in such a venture. Fox do still own the original movies, but surely Fox and Disney can reach an agreement that sees millions of dollars in profits.

A Blu-ray release of True Lies is more or less inevitable, but it's a tremendous worry that it hasn't happened yet. Is Fox nervous about the costs of a proper Cameron-approved remaster? Are they trying to negotiate a full-blown special edition treatment packed with extras, but are a bit weary of whether or not it'll make a profit?

I would love to own this movie on Blu-ray, it would look spectacular. It's such a superb action movie.

When Trumpets Fade is a telemovie from HBO, and it's so underrated that practically nobody knows about it. It's so great, and I'm so dissatisfied with the DVD we're left with: full-screen with borderline VHS quality.

What's going on, HBO? I would pay a decent price for this movie in HD, beautifully remastered in widescreen. Surely a HD master exists out there somewhere for television syndication, and if not, why not?

Outpost (2008)

On a number of occasions, I have directly asked the makers behind Outpost about a potential Blu-ray release of this low-budget gem. The closest I got to an answer was them saying it's on the cards, but they need to get the rights. Evidently, the filmmakers want to do it, but the distributor is a bit weary.

I'd really love to see this movie on Blu-ray, in glorious HD which will do justice to the gorgeous visual design of deep blacks and shadows. It would give the movie a great boost.

The rest of the ZAZ movies have seen a Blu-ray release, and I do own Airplane! and all three Naked Gun movies. Even lesser-known spoofs like Hot Shots have seen releases. Why Top Secret! remains unreleased is a bit of a mystery, but it is with Paramount, who are appalling with catalogue titles.

Maybe it's on the cards for the future. Maybe not. I keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, Jackass 3 has seen a Blu-ray release. But not in 3D. Oh yeah, they released a shitty 3D version, but not a true 3D version. That's what I want.

A master exists, as it has seen syndication on TV. And some 3D titles were given the true 3D treatment further down the track. But Paramount has actually addressed this one, saying it's not on the schedule for the foreseeable future. Balls!

They Got Released!

There are far too many movies out there, and barely 10% of them will reach Blu-ray.

As more and more catalogue titles reach the format, here are a few movies I would buy on Blu-ray ASAP.

There are some obscure titles here, as well as some movies that you would seriously have expected to have reached Blu at this point.

What's the reasoning, I wonder, of the studios refusing to dish out blu-ray versions?

What's the reasoning, I wonder, of the studios refusing to dish out blu-ray versions?

It's a matter of money. Creating a proper HD master of a title can cost millions; they have to re-scan the original camera negative, clean it up, and create a digital file, all of which costs money. It also costs money to create special features as people must be paid to assemble them. Distributors have to wonder if such ventures as worth it. That's why there are independent distributors who take care of a lot of niche catalogue titles.

And as for Star Wars, Lucas just doesn't want the original versions released, period. I'm sure Fox and Disney are discussing it, but without knowing the complex inner workings of the companies, it's impossible to know what the hold up is. Maybe Lucas included a clause in the sale of Lucasfilm which said the unalterated versions can never be released. Maybe Lucas is kicking up a stink. Who knows.

That's nuts, I really had no idea it was so damn pricey. Makes me rethink a lot about blu-rays in general. Lucas is just, well....Lucas, ha ha.

You tuned into the whole 4k thing yet?

Yeah, it's unfortunate. And all the more so because physical media is slowly dying and studios want that push towards digital downloads and the like.

You tuned into the whole 4k thing yet?

Yup. And honestly, not too fussed about it. For some movies it'll probably make a difference (probably older movies since the grain structure will be handled far better), but for the most part the difference won't be visible unless you spend thousands on a brand new TV the size of your living room wall.

But we'll see.
