The Ron Perlman Effect

1. Ron Perlman
Love Him! For appearing in Enemy at the Gates and a Stella Artois advert, as well as his performance in City of Lost Children. He's also successful despite a chronic ugliness and is prone to chomping on cigars.

Hate Him! For appearances in Cronos and Hellboy *SIGH*. He is also chronically ugly. And is he muscular? Or just really really fat and weirdly shaped?

2. Rosamund Pike
Love Her! She was really deadpan as a Bond villain, and she is also quite strange-looking-but-hot. And who could forget that really massive pair of...eyes.

Hate Her! Completely unconvincing as a genius level intellect scientist in Doom, which was also a disastrous film. Her accent is also kind of annoying, and every other film she has been in is rubbish.

3. Liam Neeson
Love Him! For being the voice of my dad in Fallout 3. Also appreciated him in Star Wars and Batman Begins. He has a solid and authoritative voice that also wins me over. And you can't quite hate him when his wife has just died.

Hate Him! For the abomination that is Dark Man. As well as Love Actually in which he's just a cool guy playing an uncool guy that is supposed to be cool. I'd have drowned my son at birth if it came out that lame, the real LN would've too.

4. Tom Cruise
Love Him! For his performance in Collateral, mainly. I also enjoyed The Last Samurai, because he was a badass in it. If only he had more roles like Vincent.

Hate Him! He's completely crazy. And on top of that he's been in a string of average films recently. He can't be the action man he once was without spooning on the cheese to match. He's also rail roading his wife into a life of self-destruction!

5. Pierce Brosnan
Love Him! When I was growing up, Pierce Brosnan was the personification of suave and cool. Just look how many cars, women and kills he notched up during his time as James Bond. What a guy.

Hate Him! It's a shame some of the worst Bond films ever had him in. Then there's the horrible skincare adverts he's decided to do. Now he's just a greasy fop who sucks in every role.
The Flagship's rating:

Average listal rating (790 ratings) 7.5
6. John Cusack
Love Him! Also a pretty suave guy. The only film I remember him in is Grosse Point Blank in which I really liked his character.

Hate Him! Is he suave, or is he actually really smarmy? I just can't tell. And what's with his face - he seems to be completely immune to ageing.

7. Michael Douglas
Love Him! There is always a place in my heart for Michael Douglas thanks to Falling Down and the child-friendly Romancing the Stone films that raised me as a child.

Hate Him! I don't like my hero to be a sleaze-driven borderline rapist or sociopathic loose cannon in his spare time. Especially when he can't portray the latter stereotype convincingly!
The Flagship's rating:

Average listal rating (2203 ratings) 8.1
8. Natalie Portman
Love Her! I just used to love her. She's a really good actress who happens to be in a tonne of my favourite films. She also appeared in a Devendra Banhart video, that really made my day.

Hate Her! I think I would detest her in real life. She comes across as more pretentious then one hundred clones of me could ever be.
The Flagship's rating:

'The Ron Perlman Effect' is a scientific phenomenon I use to describe actors who I like one minute, and then hate the next. This vicious cycle of love and hate can leave me mentally exhausted and leaves me unsure as to where I stand on certain films. To put it another way:

The Ron Perlman Effect: "I woke up sweating in the middle of the night, desperate to get to a PC because I'd overrated Ron Perlman by half a star on listal..."

Devastating stuff!

Imagine if he had something to do with Joss Whedon.

I have very similar feelings about most of these, and plenty more... I might have to make a similar list (and give the nod to you still, of course).

Also, I haven't liked anything Douglas has done since "The Game" mainly because his movies have been crap ("Dupree" was good but he wasn't); but I also met him several years back and he was completely phony and this experience has left a bad taste ever since.

Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia killed it for me. Dante's Peak and Bond. Only good films he has ever touched.

I just realised i actually like Ron Perlman. Its something great about an actor who isnt always all dolled up. Some heroes and villians need to be ugly or rough looking!

Like Benicio Del Toro in some of his parts.

Speaking of Ron Perlman being ugly:

I liked Pierce Brosnan better as Remington Steele than James Bond.

I agree with silent killer, Brosnan was always Remington Steele, but I thought he made a good Bond as well. Maybe some of the movies were not up to snuff, but I thought he had what it takes.

By the same token, I thought of Roger Moore as The Saint and couldn't accept him as Bond.

Brosnan has been in a lot of crappy movies. The last good thing I saw him in was a western with Liam Neeson called Seraphim Falls.

I just can't hate someone for not aging like the rest of us.

I agree that Michael Douglas' 15 minutes was over years ago.
