People who added this item 3492  Average listal rating (2406 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.5
1. Alien (1979)
I personally didn't find this movie intriguing. Maybe it was the Alien itself, I don't know, but I did not enjoy this. Maybe overrated, or maybe just not my cup of tea. Also, not a fan of Sigourney Weaver.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2575  Average listal rating (1768 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 8.5
2. Aliens (1986)
I might be one in a million, but I really wasn't feeling this movie at all. It is on the IMDB top 250 somehow.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 3452  Average listal rating (2353 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating 8.6
3. Léon: The Professional (1994)
I loved Natalie Portman, but personally didn't much like Reno. He's a good actor, just his character in this film bugged me. It's not a horrible film, it's actually solid, just not a masterpiece.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 4084  Average listal rating (2802 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating
4. Avatar (2009)
Just a spectacle of excellent special effects, and I'm sorry to say that's all it was. The story was going nowhere, and the romance shown was unnecessary as well. I don't find this a masterpiece at all, and feel it was too hyped up.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 4197  Average listal rating (2780 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.4
5. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
A very enjoyable film, but nothing super intriguing. Tarantino creatively puts together a good piece of work. The ratings just don't exactly make any sense to me.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2225  Average listal rating (1425 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.8
6. The Birds (1963)
The only Hitchcock film I wasn't fond of. Not frightening, and not very suspenseful. I did however enjoy the chemistry between the main characters, and the fact that the movie looked like it was from the 80's was impressive too.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 4709  Average listal rating (3093 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 8.1
7. Donnie Darko (2001)
Boring, ridiculous, and just plain stupid.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1903  Average listal rating (1136 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating
8. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
I just found this movie very dull, filled with absolutely nothing scary like tons of critics and viewers have said. The whole duration of the film isn't filled with much.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 8204  Average listal rating (5125 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.8
9. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the... (2001)
I've never been a fan of fantasy films filled with swords, arrows, magic etc. so this really isn't a surprise. It's very well made, and it's a little intriguing, but I really didn't like the two that I saw.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 7537  Average listal rating (4807 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.7
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Same as the first.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2128  Average listal rating (1348 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 7.5
11. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
I will admit that the franchise has an extremely clever concept, however I don't find Freddy Krueger creepy, nor did I find any of the films suspenseful in the least bit. In fact, I find it to be quite silly.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1149  Average listal rating (720 ratings) 6.3  IMDB Rating 6.4
12. Friday the 13th (1980)
Highly uneventful, and not suspenseful in the least bit. Maybe I missed something, because it's considered to be a horror classic to tons of people.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 956  Average listal rating (652 ratings) 6.2  IMDB Rating 6.7
13. Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Just pure pointless shooting. Absolutely no story, a bad film that people seem to like.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 3944  Average listal rating (2636 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 8.5
14. WALL·E (2008)
Not very appealing to me. It won best animated feature of 08, yet I wasn't at all into it. The message behind it wasn't very good either.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 3383  Average listal rating (2205 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.3
15. Blade Runner (1982)
I don't know, this "Classic" just didn't interest me at all. Not a whole lot happened during the film, and the premise isn't my forte.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2865  Average listal rating (1870 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 8.7
16. The Usual Suspects (1995)
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this movie, but in the end it's just your average crime story, with the exception of the excellent finish, maybe the best "WTF?" ending I've seen.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 6800  Average listal rating (4402 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating
17. Pulp Fiction (1994)
Yes, the movie nobody in the world dislikes, the amazing "masterpiece" is on this list. Shoot me for not drooling over it.

This movie is good, in fact I would definitely watch it multiple more times. I just don't think it's a masterpiece. The acting is off the chains, and I really enjoyed the story, but it just didn't quite fit in for me.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1044  Average listal rating (610 ratings) 6.6  IMDB Rating 7.2
18. About Schmidt (2002)
I heard so many good things from this one, but really it's just a very depressing and non enjoyable flick, and I'm one of the people who enjoy depressing movies, so that's really saying something.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1363  Average listal rating (872 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 7.5
19. Source Code (2011)
I know this has only been out for a little while. But a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes!? c'mon man, really? It's entirely overrated to say the least. I enjoyed the acting (Kind of) and the promise was there. It was too cheesy and predictable, not to mention mundane.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 5203  Average listal rating (3611 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 8.7
20. Seven (1995)
An enjoyable film, with a great ending and some excellently filmed dark atmospheric scenes, but in the end it is truly just a general serial killer flick. Seriously.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 5051  Average listal rating (3389 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.5
21. The Shining (1980)
Bad acting from everyone except Scatman and Jack. The wife couldn't have been more of a nuisance, while the young kid just says all the cheesy one liners from many horrors before and after it. "The Shining" is predictable, uneven, corny, and just too dry to really get involved in.

On a positive note: the atmosphere was excellent.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 5949  Average listal rating (4052 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating
22. The Dark Knight (2008)
Well, I like this film, but it's VERY cheesy, and seems like it's trying to make fun of the audience with it's plain and general dialogue. The story was complex, and had a lot of interesting sub-stories that intertwined, but Nolan just didn't connect the dots to my liking. Not to mention the predictability.

On a positive note: Beautifully shot, excellent soundtrack, and Christian Bale.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1705  Average listal rating (1134 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 8.2
23. The Thing (1982)
"The Thing" replaces real thrills with ridiculous looking alien creatures that pop up quite frequently, and had no impact on me. The acting on Kurt Russel's part was great, but the whole thing was just a non-suspenseful mess. Not Carpenter's high point.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2177  Average listal rating (1420 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.8
24. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
All these characters are somewhat funny. However, the whole plot is just too dull, and I found it impossible to fully enjoy.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 836  Average listal rating (503 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.6
25. The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
A simple case of preference, I believe. A very slow moving thriller, that, in the end, just isn't rewarding enough. I thought the acting was very good, but the whole narrative wasn't going anywhere interesting.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 615  Average listal rating (361 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.7
26. Blood Simple (1984)
A few intense sequences here and there, but overall, Joel and Ethan Coen's directorial debut is void of any real depth.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2456  Average listal rating (1433 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 8.1
27. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
For now, Rotten Tomatoes has this at 96%. And while that may not mean a lot, I have friends and family who love this movie as well. The final thirty minutes are very satisfying. The rest is, well, very pushed, very cheesy, and flat-out not fun.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1551  Average listal rating (998 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.3
28. Unforgiven (1992)
Predictable story, relatively annoying characters, and not wholly original.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1700  Average listal rating (1066 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.7
29. 127 Hours (2010)
It didn't hit home in the emotional department, and I felt ripped off after viewing it.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1370  Average listal rating (859 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.9
30. True Romance (1993)
An annoying Christian Slater, with some underwhelming action sequences. This is a simple thriller, and not to mention a very dry one.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 3840  Average listal rating (2387 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.4
31. Requiem for a Dream (2000)
O.K, we get it, drugs are terrible. Aronofsky felt the need to shove that point down our throats, with uninteresting characters, plot-lines, and no actual direction. I will admit that it did disturb me, though, and the whole downward spiral with the old lady was fairly good.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 4035  Average listal rating (2689 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating
32. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
I find it stupid, to be honest. It really is as simple as that. Every time I saw it, it bugged the crap out of me.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 1093  Average listal rating (671 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.8
33. 50/50 (2011)
I very much like both Levitt and Rogen (mostly Rogen) but felt really unattached throughout most of this movie. Its a hit-and-miss comedy/drama, that unfortunately mostly misses. Its very generic, yet so highly praised.
The Cinephile's rating:

People who added this item 2846  Average listal rating (1872 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.9
34. Crash (2004)
Melodramatic, "emotional" and "deep" scenes, that never actually spark any feeling. It was basically a soap opera made for the big screen, but the result is just not worth it. Best Picture winner? Hmmmmmm............
The Cinephile's rating:

Keep in mind fellow Listal members: I enjoyed a lot of these films. They are NOT necessarily bad, just not nearly as good as the majority says (IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, other users, etc.)

Opinions are very subjective, just remember that!

I would agree that all of these are overrated in some capacity, except Seven. I was blown away by that movie. The Godfather is amazing but not the greatest film of all time, hence it is overrated but on a different scale. Still, I enjoy all of the movies listed except Donnie Darko.
Posted: 4 years, 7 months ago at Oct 1 20:33
I was just expecting much more from Seven, though I still highly enjoyed it. And yes, Donnie Darko was definitely not what it was hyped up to be.
Posted: 3 years, 8 months ago at Sep 9 13:27
Finally someone agrees with me, when it comes to Donnie Darko that is :)
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Aug 20 4:18
I think we are the 2 only people on earth who thinks that Seven is overrated. Totally agree with you on that one !

Glad to hear it! I'd like to see your most overrated films list.
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Aug 20 15:14
Get my vote for Donnie Darko. Pretty much all you have to say is "ArtHouse Horror" the movie is predicable.

And WALL-E, that fixing ecological disasters is simple and fun.
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Aug 23 0:12
The movie is ridiculous. Not Intriguing one bit. Wall-E, just no good, nuff said.
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Oct 17 4:19
Damn, I thought that I was a tough critic! Don't get me wrong many of these I agree with. Plenty of great films on the list, but just about all have large (if not huge) exaggerations trailing along with them.

But the question is MovieMan does Inception belong on your list?
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Oct 17 21:35
He he, I become more and more critical with each film viewing, mainly because I get sick of the same thing over and over, and catch different flaws that I never would have been able to before.

I unfortunately haven't seen Inception yet, for some odd reason, but most likely plan on waiting for the dvd/blu-ray release.
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Oct 17 22:49
Glad Avatar's in here, most hyped movie, hated it. LOTR?? interesting, excellent list tho.
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Oct 17 23:17
I thought I was the only one who disliked Avatar, nice. I just simply don't like The Lord Of The Rings movies, at least the ones I saw. I can understand people being into them, but not my cup of tea.

Appreciate the vote
Posted: 2 years, 7 months ago at Oct 17 23:47
yea Avatar and I aren't friends hahaha :p
Posted: 1 year, 9 months ago at Aug 4 1:08
i like avatar and lord of the rings, they may have been a little overrated but i still like the movies.
Posted: 1 year, 9 months ago at Aug 18 11:07
Too bad you removed 'Seven'...
Posted: 1 year, 9 months ago at Aug 18 16:02
Yeah, I watched it a second time and really liked it.
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Aug 25 2:05
@Mr.Lays. Actually, Inception got the all the hype for a reason. Great film.
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Aug 25 11:02
I'm glad 'Seven' is back again! And your comment is just spot on.

By the way, if you still want to watch my list :

And I really trash some classics there, so beware!

Thanks, my man Johan! :)

I will check it.
Posted: 1 year, 7 months ago at Oct 2 22:05
Well, If you're interested in such things, I suggest you take a look at my highest rated films. A lot of which are very popular and critically acclaimed, but I love them regardless. Saying the above, I don't believe a separate list would do any justice.

Good point, and I'm glad you're paying attention to the list, explaining things and such.
Posted: 1 year, 7 months ago at Oct 3 1:53
lol i don't know what to say. god.

About which thing, JayTrotter?
Posted: 1 year, 7 months ago at Oct 10 5:04
I agree with you on Avatar, The Birds, Donnie Darko, and Friday the 13th. And while I don't agree with the rest, I respect your opinion and glad you have listed reasons :)
Posted: 11 months ago at Jun 22 6:01
I agree with some of this choices...I'm particularly glad to see "Requiem for a Dream" on this; but I think that put both "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" is an exageration, I love both of the movies, but I see how u can find 'em overrated...but not THAT overrated, especially not both of 'em...I always thought "Reservoir Dogs" was actually kind of underrated compared to "Pulp Fiction".

Then I read "The Royal Tenenbaums" and I just started crying...I dunno who said it was supposed to be a "dark comedy", it's just a wrong definition...I find it Anderson's best movie and it's one of my all time favorite; now I know Anderson is a "love him or hate him" kind of storyteller, but I don't really see how anyone could call this "poorly written"!

I also strongly disagree on "Rosemary's Baby", "Seven", "The Man Who Wasn't there" and "Blade Runner".

(btw...I also did a similar list, check it out if u mind!)
Posted: 6 months, 4 weeks ago at Oct 23 21:30
This is a very intriguing list for me. It splits into two rather different parts for me. I like a lot almost all movies in your list what I watched. The rest I have no intentions to watch (unless somebody works real hard to convince me that they are worth watching).

I wonder why you watched two "Lord of the rings" movies, if you are not a fan of such stuff. Was it a homework assignment, or a boy/girlfriend forced you? I never had any intention to watch them, and an accidental viewing of about 20 minutes of one of them on TV only confirmed that it was the right decision. I don't think that they are real bad, just not for me.

I also wonder how one may think that "Not a whole lot happened during" the "Blade Runner"? Something happens all the time, and there are things which are very hard but quite interesting to figure out. Fans of this movie were wondering for more than 20 years if Harrison Ford's character is human or he is a replicant, even after Ridley Scott added 30 seconds to the movie to make the answer more transparent. Later on he just told the answer.
Posted: 6 months, 4 weeks ago at Oct 23 23:27
Ha ha, the Lord of the rings films I watched in the theaters way back in the day (with family) so I can't really vouch for them at the current moment. However, I plan on wathing them again, just for fairness sake.

Blade Runner was a film I saw a LONG time ago as well. When I wasn't even close to as "movie mature" as I am today. Sooooo, I will definitely watch that one again. As well as the Alien films, and lots of others on this list.

Thanks for the feedback, by the way.
