145 6.6 7.20 Nominated by Escafeld An Australian road movie that features two drag queens and a transsexual. An absolute riot of a film that features a storming performance by Terence Stamp. One of the few films I can watch over and over again as you always find an outlandish line that you missed the last time round. In my opinion one of the greatest comedy films ever. ![]()
1241 6.4 6.80 Nominated by C@rl A movie about a group of teenagers trying to lose their virginity before Graduation.
228 7.4 8.00 Nominated by bcfc4life Based on a true story and doesn't use the stereotypical black gangster cliche but shows a clever man who outwits nearly everyone. Also it seems to be a more accurate film about drug trafficking and doesn't go all out to use violence at every possible moment.
524 6.6 6.90 Nominated by Chelsea Blue Tongue-in-cheek take on the culture of the 1970's starring Will Ferrel as top anchorman Ron Burgendy, and his co-reporters. First time I saw it I hated it but it gets funnier and funnier every time I watch it.
191 6.8 7.50 Nominated by StretfordEnd Horror comedy, great special effects, good cast and some great lines. A totally different take on Werewolf films, with the visceral attacks counterbalanced by the comedy of the whole preposterous situation. ![]()
653 7.9 8.60 Nominated by Royal Blue Nose The brutal realities of the horrors of the Vietnam War meets the genius of Francis Ford Coppola. What results is a claustrophobic journey with a stellar cast (including Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper). The madness only intensifies as the minutes roll on and Sheen continues deeper into Vietnam up the jungle entrenched river. Culminates in the iconic scenes with the crazed Marlon Brando. A true classic! ![]()
290 7.2 7.90 Nominated by PsychicPscouse Another really different sort of epic movie from Mel Gibson, who makes millions acting in mainstream fare and then indulges his eccentric passions when he directs. The story of a South American native doomed to a human sacrifice who escapes to save himself and his family, Apocalypto is haunting and beautifully made. And the chase scene that takes up most of the second half of the film will blow your socks off.
138 8.1 8.40 Mominated by mickgrant Insurance clerk (Jack Lemmon) lends his apartments out to his company executives for their secret trysts in order to progress through his company's ranks. This is further complicated when he falls for his boss (Fred MacMurray) mistress elevator girl (Shirley MacLaine). Classic film which works on so many levels. As an allegory to big business, a biting social drama and comedy with the 'Billy Wilder' touch. Maybe not as funny as Wilder's 'Some Like it Hot' but probably a better, more rounded movie. Arguably, Lemmon and MacLaine's finest hour. 9/10.
120 7.3 7.40 Nominated by Distillerdude A divorcee holds a mock film audition with the intention of marrying one of the final contestants, but she doesn't turn out to be so perfect. This is a Japanese horror movie and one of the most disturbing films i've ever seen. It's completely different to others in the genre, and instead relies on subtle tension and psychologically scarring scenes to make sure you never ever forget it. ![]()
796 7 7.50 Nominated by Not_Smog Staring Tom Hanks this is the true story of the moon-bound mission that developed severe trouble and the men that rescued it with skill and dedication. ![]()
79 6.8 7.10 Nominated by Benzel AKA Banlieue 13. Set in the ghettos of Paris in 2010, an undercover cop and ex-thug try to infiltrate a gang in order to defuse a neutron bomb. With lots of cool stunts performed by free runners.
305 7.6 7.80 Nominated by Distillerdude Blue Velvet is a dark, sensuous mystery involving the intertwining lives of four very different individuals: the naive college student with a penchant for mysteries; the haunting cabaret singer with a dark and deadly secret; the innocent detective's daughter; and Frank, the psychotic killer fueled by his own sexual fantasies (played by a scary Dennis Hopper!). The film shows that there is a darker side of life waiting for us all. Typically incredible David Lynch film.
67 6.8 7.30 Nominated by Jock Arguably the best war film ever, this epic is a true story with an exceptionally good cast. Private ryan is good, it's not true. Platoon is good, it's not true. A bridge too far is great and it really happened. This is the story of operation 'market garden' an attempt to use paratroops to jump behind enemy lines and take over every bridge between the front line and Germany. ![]()
461 7.5 7.90 Nominated by StretfordEnd Anarchic nonsense, a truly great comedy featuring Dan Ackroyd and the late, great John Belushi. Cameo appearances from all sorts of people, including Twiggy, Cab Calloway, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Carrie Fisher, Ray Charles and Steven Spielberg. The one liners are great, the music is brilliant, and special mentions must go to the "Illinois Nazi Party" and of course the Dodge "Bluesmobile". ![]()
718 6.2 6.00 Nominated by lfcdon8 "Thirty-two-year-old Sonny Koufax is a law school graduate steadfastly avoiding the increasing pressures of adult responsibilities. In a misguided attempt to impress his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend and prove he is ready for responsibility, Sonny accepts custody of five-year-old Julian under the pretense of being his biological father. Before long, Sonny-plunged into the unknown territory of sleep deprivation, irritating children's songs and bedwetting-is embracing his role as a temporary dad taking an unconventional approach to child rearing..."
739 7.8 8.20 Nominated by Skitters The Coen Brothers at their best. What happens when people break into your house and piddle on your rug - well quite obviously a mystery tour of kidnap, blackmail, fraud, and tenpin bowling. In short a totally offbeat comedy.
37 5.8 6.20 Nominated by Escafeld This 1958 film is a classic scifi B-movie & introduces us to one of the all-time iconic 'space monsters'. I remember watching this as a young lad & being absolutely terrified by the shapeless, faceless, oozing mass of slime that devoured everything in it's path. A relentless, creeping, uncaring monstrosity that wants to consume YOU! ![]()
259 5.3 5.60 Nominated by gers_fan1 A film starring an interesting line up, including John Travolta, The Rock, Uma Thurman, Danny De Vito, Christina Millian, Vince Vaughan. John Travolta wants to try and get into the music buisness, and notices Christina Millian but struggles to get her signature.. Interesting but great film.

51 6.8 6.40 Nominated by Escafeld I loved this film as a kid & still do. A fun children's musical with a great score. Rival mobs of gangsters try to wipe each other out with the famous splurge guns. ![]()
538 8.3 8.80 Nominated by mrwatfordfc Set in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rocket, played by Alexandre Rodrigues, tries to find his way out of his drug and violence dominated neighbourhood and become successful as a photographer. Fantastic performances from a virtually unknown cast. ![]()
566 7.5 7.90 Nominated by Escafeld A cult comedy film that will have you rolling around laughing your head off. One of the funniest films I've ever seen. Two friends who work in shops next to each other have a crazy day shirking their responsibilities & meeting all sorts of weird & wonderful characters. The necrophilia scene is particularly memorable! ![]()
42 7.7 7.10 Nominated by StretfordEnd Joseph Heller's anti war novel brought to cynical life, though Alan Arkin was sadly miscast in a lead role made for bigger actor. Nevertheless it's well translated from the written word and the contradictions of war and it's effect on the people in it are well observed. ![]()
339 7.4 7.60 Nominated by Smiffyboy Based on the Alice Walker classic, this is the story of a woman born into abuse (both physical, sexual and mental) growing up in the deep south in early the 1900s. Very moving story which begins with 14yo Celie, pregnant by her father, having her child removed from her and adopted by another family. The story follows the next 30 years of her life. Personally, my favourite film ever. By some amazing freak of nature, Whoopi Goldberg is absolutely fantastic as the lead role, and Oprah (plays her sister-in-law) is also great. Pity both of them are talentless and crap now. ![]()
454 7.6 8.00 Nominated by Chelsea Blue Based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Pileggi and Larry Shandling, Robert De Niro stars as Sam "Ace" Rothstein, a chain-smoking top gambling handicapper who is called by the Mob to oversee the day-to-day operations at the fictional Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. ![]()
756 7.5 8.00 Nominated by Skitters Bond as it should be - fantastic stunts, less reliance on CGI, more work on the plotline without relying on gimmicky gadgets and one liners to pad out 2 hours and a Bond who exudes toughness. ![]()
152 6.4 6.80 Nominated by PsychicPscouse Sequel to the classic 'The Hustler', Paul Newman reprises his star turn as pool shark Fast Eddie Felson, dealing with a young turk played by an outstanding Tom Cruise. Newman got his long-overdue Oscar for this movie, it's very good but not in a league with the original. Watch for pool legends Willie Mosconi and Steve Mizerak in bit parts.
46 7.3 7.70 Nominated by mickgrant Recently released convict (Robert Mitchum) terrorises the prosecuting lawyer (Gregory Peck) and his family with devastating consequences. Sadistic, charismatic, pitch-perfect performance from Mitchum (arguably his finest) and great support from Peck as the family man in peril make this cat-and-mouse thriller one of the finest.

124 6.9 7.00 Nominated by Escafeld Two con men get conned. Michael Caine is excellent as the straight man to Steve Martin's zany performance. Some great twists and turns to the story and very funny scenes throughout. A first rate film that ranks as one of the best comedy of the 1980's and one that can still raise a laugh today. ![]()
531 8.3 8.70 Nominated by StretfordEnd Peter Sellers' finest hour. A chaotic slice of cold war madness, depicting the absurdity of the nuclear 'solution' and the corruption and outright stupidity of those in power both politically and militarily.
962 8 8.50 Nominated by Cescy Football Along with Goodfellas, this is Scorcese's finest work. Deservedly a winner of 4 Oscars, it's your typical 'American Movie' from Scorcese, everything is so close to home. Acting is top notch, editing from Mrs. Shoonmaker is splendid as always, the movie superb! ![]()
6 7.6 7.40 Nominated by PsychicPscouse From 1950 with Edmond O'Brien as a man who has 24 hours to figure out who's poisoned him. Gritty, stylish film noir classic. What? You thought I meant the remake with Dennis Quaid?? Silly! Go to your room and no TV...
213 6.8 7.30 Nominated by AB2002 The original Bond film and arguably still the most famous. Sean Connery starting his most famous role with aplomb and setting a superb benchmark for Messrs Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig to follow. And who doesn't remember the first time they saw Ursula Andress in THAT bikini?! ![]()

1046 7.7 8.30 Nominated by Distillerdude A mind-bending feature starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a troubled American teen plagued by incessant sleepwalking, family drama and visions of a menacing 6-foot-tall, doomsday-prophesizing rabbit. Confusing, but brilliant cult classic.
664 7.2 8.00 Nominated by StretfordEnd This was as scary as scary got back in the day, and even now has it's moments. A sick girl, possessed by the sickest of demons, some of the set pieces are almost comic now, but the whole package is still an eyeful. ![]()
301 7.6 7.60 Nominated by Escafeld The story of a young boy who loses everything including his parents when the Japanese invade. A Speilberg epic, visually stuning & great acting performances from a young Christian Bale & John Malkovich. A story of survival with war as the backdrop. Asks questions throughout, what if that was me, how would I have coped, how did this young lad manage? A superb must watch film. ![]()

28 7.3 7.20 Nominated by StretfordEnd Scouser Julie Walters aspires to higher things, bored with her life as a hairdresser married to a caveman. 1395 8 8.80 Nominated by DV85 Does it need a sentence, its Star Wars ... therefore unless its Episode I or II which it obviously isn't, its brilliant! So amazing, so different, so ahead of its time and still stands the test of time. ![]()
126 7.2 7.50 Nominated by Chelsea Blue "The film is based on the non-fiction book Escape from Alcatraz by J. Campbell Bruce. It chronicles the story of Frank Morris (Eastwood) and brothers John (Ward) and Clarence Anglin (Jack Thibeau), who have the distinction of being possibly the only people to ever escape from the Alcatraz prison. It also features the film debut of Danny Glover. A cold, atmospheric thriller, the film captures many of the difficulties of prison life and the conditions of Alcatraz prison before it was closed down permanently, shortly after the escape. There is some hint at the end of the film that the escape was successful, but in fact it remains a mystery as to whether the escapers succeeded or not." ![]()
210 6.8 7.00 Nominated by StretfordEnd Kurt Russell is the man with just 24 hours to rescue the President from the prison island New York. As one eyed Snake Pliskin he naturally outwits the bad guys, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake, and manages to get the President (Donald Pleasance) back to safety, with of course just a few seconds to spare. Non-demanding nonsense, but enjoyable all the same. ![]()
286 7 7.40 Nominated by Escafeld Great WWII movie set during the Battle of Stalingrad. Two snipers pit their wits in deadly game of cat & mouse. Some hard hitting scenes, especially those of unarmed Russians forced into suicidal assaults against the German lines only to be machine gunned by their own troops should they turn back or even stop the advance. ![]()

69 8 8.30 Nominated by StretfordEnd Gary Cooper is one man against his own town's cowardice, and the infamous Miller gang who are coming for him. Grace Kelly is perhaps a tad unlikely as his wife, who wants him to flee before the gang arrive, but of course he stands his ground and does his job, alone. 57 7.4 8.10 Nominated by PsychicPscouse From 1961, the movie that made Paul Newman a superstar, one of the best films he ever did and far superior to The Color Of Money(the much-later sequel). Newman creates a legend in Fast Eddie Felson, the young pool-hall hotshot who finds redemption after hitting rock bottom. Jackie Gleason is terrific as Minnesota Fats and George C Scott shines as his sleazy manager. Top-drawer stuff.

10 7 6.40 Nominated by PsychicPscouse Probably the greatest bad movie ever made, this was Michael Cimino's followup to his Vietnam epic 'The Deer Hunter'. 'Heaven's Gate' takes on the Johnson County range war of the 1880s American West, in which poor immigrant sheepherders fought for squatters' rights against rich rancher land barons. Impossibly bloated at well past 200 minutes, Cimino's would-be epic failed on multiple levels--too long, too violent, too many holes in the script and way too much over budget. It's said in Hollywood that this movie put the film business back in the hands of the accountants after Cimino's excesses broke the studio's bank... Weird casting--50s rockabilly icon Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins as a corrupt US Cavalry commander... Weird editing--The studio took the movie back after its gala premiere and cut it down to under two hours, thus turning a really bad long movie into a really bad short movie...
