The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are four turtles who, at a young age, were exposed to radioactive slime. An onlooking rat, Splinter, found them and cared for them in the sewers of New York City, where he also raised them and taught them ninjutsu. He named them after the renaissance masters: Leonardo (Leonardo da Vinci), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi), and Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni). Their arch-nemesis, Oroku Saki (The Shredder), killed Splinter's own master years before, and he has a habit of returning in one form or another no matter how many times they defeat him.
