Scandinavian Horror Films
1919
Sweden Dir: Mauritz Stiller (Like many silent films that would influence the genre of horror, this is not really a horror film. It's more of a drama/thriller laced with doom and gloom) 1921 (January 24)
silent film Denmark Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer (not specifically horror but featuring imagery such as the Inquisition, torture, etc. It follows Satan as he works his evil deeds on Earth) 1922
silent film Denmark/Sweden Dir: Benjamin Christensen Hexenkult's rating:
1958 (September 18)
Sweden Dir: Arne Mattsson (Remake of the silent classic from 1921) 1958 (December 19)
Sweden Dir: Arne Mattsson (Not strictly horror, but a mystery thriller that Mario Bava was inspired by when he made Blood and Black Lace. Certainly a precursor to the Italian "giallo" sub-genre.) 1961 (February 20)
Denmark/USA Dir: Sidney W. Pink Hexenkult's rating:
1971 (February 10)
Sweden/USA Dir: Laslo Benedek (This is an American/Swedish co-production. I've included it on this list because it was shot in Sweden and Denmark and features mainly Swedish actors) 1974 (June)
Sweden Dir: Bo Arne Vibenius Hexenkult's rating:
1975 (May)
Sweden/France/USA Dir: Calvin Floyd (Documentary about the origins of Dracula) Hexenkult's rating:
1976 (April 5)
Sweden Dir: Ingmar Bergman (Not strictly horror, but more of a psychological suspense film) 1977 (May)
Iceland Dir: Hrafn Gunnlaugsson TV Movie (Directed by Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, known for his excellent viking trilogy, When the Raven Flies, Shadow of the Raven, and The White Viking, this TV movie may be considered the first horror film from Iceland, followed by the 1983 psychological drama/thriller, The House, listed below.) 1981 (November)
Sweden Dir: Calvin Floyd (Based on a story by Sheridan LeFanu) 1983 (March)
Iceland Dir: Egill Eðvarðsson (Though it's more of a psychological drama with supernatural overtones, this could be considered Iceland's second horror film, behind the above mentioned Icelandic TV movie from 1977, The Crimson Sunset. It would be 26 years later, in 2009, when the first "hardcore" (feature-length) horror film would emerge from Iceland with Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre (aka Harpoon); that is unless you count the silly Troma-esque shot-on-video comedy/horror hijinks of Knight of the Living Dead, from 2005, which is also listed below.) |
