Main Street (1956)
Sad, hard, and dirty.
I´ve never hated anybody as in this movie. I was angry a week after watching it.

This is not just sad, it´s gloriously brutal. It will gut you alive.

Von Trier made the main character break the 4th wall in three moments looking to the camera just to make sure the spectators dont attach too much to her.

It didnt work for me. I was mad at the humanity for a month after watching this.

Fuck, im crying right now just for remembering the bells at the ending (no spoiler, i think)

Hell, everyone knows this one but that doesnt mean it cant get into your mind and kick in your cry-like-a-baby gland everytime you watch it.

The global argument wont destroy you but some moments will, and they stick with you.

This wont make you feel bad for more than an hour but lots of people I know (i guess they aren´t used to hard movies) didnt expect the sad ending for certain character (trying not to spoil anything here) and felt it like a kick in their guts.

For me it was specially great because i gave that ending for granted from the fist third and watched everything with that in context. A great premise and better execution.

The Passion of Joan of Arc and the documentaries Night and Fog and The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On would destroy you, and they're fantastic films.

"Breaking the Waves" was sad, but not as much as I might expect. But it is still one of my favorite movies. And Emily Watson gives one of the best performances of all time. I have not seen any of the others.

Suggestions-
Tyrannosaur, Directed by Paddy Considine
Dancer in the Dark, Directed by Lars Von Trier
The Living and the Dead, Directed by Simon Rumley
Dead Man's Shoes, Directed by Shane Meadows
The Butcher Boy, Directed by Neil Jordan
Hunger, Directed by Steve McQueen
ALSO
Buddy Boy, Directed by Mark Hanlon
The latter is actually kind of funny and not sad in a traditional way, but the implications of the film are disturbing and the movie makes you feel for the disturbed, lonely main character. If it is a comedy, it's a pitch-black one, with a lot of sadness mixed in.

Hope this helps!
