The remake and original both depict a handful of human survivors living in a shopping mall surrounded by swarms of zombies, but the details differ significantly.

Barbara, a frightened, nearly catatonic character in the first film, is stronger in this version, and is the only survivor from the group in the farmhouse.

Also, you were WAY TOO GENEROUS of the Day of the Dead remake. I saw that at a pre-screening like two years ago and the audience boo'ed it...and they saw it for free.
Also, as soon as the lights came on, a single person was heard through the crowd. That person said, bluntly and quickly, "well, that sucked!". Everyone cheered.
If you count night of the Living Bread and Crazies, though, then this list of all the horror movies ever made (A fact-based list on this site) could just be re-ranked into your favorites...I am yet to undertake this...but will soon:
