Ozu

Ozu thought of himself as a tofu maker, because of the stylistic and thematic consistency of his films. Ozu actually called Floating Weeds a remake and I'd characterize it as having a less distinctly different flavor.

Good Morning has less serious themes than I Was Born But...; the boys go on a hunger strike for a TV set.

Late Autumn (1960)

Setsuko Hara's character is a widowed mother, unlike in Late Spring where she is the daughter of a widowed father. Ozu made many films where the main plot is the father or mother marrying off his/her daughter.

An Autumn Afternoon is my favorite variation of this theme; it's his final film, and my third favorite Ozu film.

The remake is more satiric than the original. Evil Dead II remakes the first film in about the first 15 minutes.

A director makes only one movie in his life. Then he breaks it into pieces and makes it again. - Jean Renoir

Films remade by the same director, that aren't considered inferior to the original. I only listed films if I'm interested in seeing both versions.

I'm not interested in seeing the remakes of J'accuse, Spoorloos, or Funny Games.

You might like IMDB's list of films remade by the same directors.

Recommendations are appreciated.

I don't think the evil dead can count as a remake and you should add "Funny Games" by Michael Haneke

Also: Love Affair/An Affair to Remember, Spoorloos/The Vanishing

An interesting list, though I'd like to point out that though the plot of Late Autumn is described correctly, Setsuko Hara is not playing the daughter in it, like in Late Spring, but the widowed mother.

Another suggestion: The Ten Commandments (1923 and 1956 versions) by Cecil B. DeMille.

Great idea for a list!

I'm not a Cecil B. DeMille fan so I probably won't see his original film. I disliked the remake of The Grudge, so I'm not including it.

I suppose this is a subjective list for you and you only, because you just add the remakes you're interested to see. If you add all the movies remade by the same director whether you're interested of it or not, it would make this list more interesting. Just saying.
