Difficulty Finding In Shops: Very Hard
Price: £60-£150 Used

Starting off the list is possibly the most sought after Wii U game to date and one of the most valuable game I have in my collection. The fifth Project Zero or Fatal Frame in North America only came out with a physical version in the PAL Region and Japan. Not only that, it was incredibly limited, with its value quickly skyrocketing after release, and this is without the limited edition tat - just the disc itself. While a very valuable collector's item, the game itself is a pretty decent horror game but nothing too special, and if you're not desperate for an actual physical copy, it's very easy to download through Nintendo's eShop. Still, good luck finding an actual copy of this that doesn't go up to £80+.

Oh good fucking god.

Out of all the games on this list, this was the most strenuous and daunting to find. Fire Emblem Fates is split into 3 versions, each having their own story and gameplay style. Finding each individual version is incredibly easy but finding the edition that had all the versions in one cartridge was an absolute nightmare. Even before release, copies of these were going out of stock within less than an hour after an announcement of availability. Even after release, you need pure sheer luck to ever get a copy of this. The follow-up to Fire Emblem Awakening, arguably the greatest game on the 3DS platform, Fates is the result of a development team that got a bit carried away with the aforementioned game's success. Still, it's Fire Emblem and kicks a lot of ass, with all versions being a unique experience on their own.

*ENTIRE ATELIER PS3 SERIES*
Difficulty Finding in Shops: Hard (if you want all of them)
Price: £5-£22 (Individually) Used

Atelier is a very niche JRPG series where its role-playing aspect heavily relies on crafting and alchemy. Finding any of these games - especially if you want the entire PS3 series - physically in a shop is a bit of a task. The most common and cheapest in the PS3 series is the first, which is Atelier Rorona, yet I've only seen that game an average of once a month in the shops. The rarest and most expensive - which is Escha & Logy go up to the £20 range and I have never seen it physically anywhere from my explorations. If you're into quirky, colouful JRPGs, this is a series you should check out.

*DANGANRONPA SERIES*
Difficulty Finding in Shops: Hard
Price: £17-£35 Used

The Vita did not do very well in its whole lifespan in terms of sales so games for this underrated baby go up to the £15-£30 range - used or new. The Danganronpa Series is one of the very best the portable console has to offer - with its eccentric story-line, endearing characters and bizarre world building - and these suckers are a bitch to find in shops, not to mention that they have kept their value pretty well. I was extremely lucky to find both Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair together for a pretty reasonable price of £38 together, with Ultra Despair Girls being bought on release (£30) but these games will go up to £35 maximum on their own and used. Check this series out if you want to experience a crazy murder-mystery story that will keep you guessing throughout.

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Nearly-Impossible
Price:£18-£50

I didn't even know that this existed until I saw and bought a Japanese with English sub copy when I was on holiday. It was released in Europe - digital only unfortunately. A very niche game where you can play as characters from various animes, it is similar to BlazBlue and Guilty Gear in terms of its 2D visuals. The only way you can get a physical copy for this highly underrated fighting game is through sheer luck that you would maybe find an import copy in shops. If you don't have enough sense of adventure, you can just order it online but where's the fun in that?

HYPERDIMENSION NEPTUNIA SERIES
Difficulty Finding In Shops: Hard
Price: £17-£44

Along with Atelier, here is another niche JRPG series on the PS3 & Vita (Later PC). Hyperdimension Neptunia is an extremely underrated series that gets both praise and malice for its silly, fan-servicing story and innovative yet unrefined combat mechanics. Personally, this is a series that just gets better and better as it goes, with the latest entry Megadimension Neptunia VII on the PS4 (this is the fourth main game in the series, the title is just a fourth-wall breaking joke)being the best it has ever been. The Vita remakes are the ones I recommend the most since it pretty much refines most aspect of what many people disliked about the original PS3 versions. While the PS3 versions are pretty difficult to find but quite cheap, the Vita versions are an absolute nightmare to find in shops, not to mention that their usual minimum value used is about £30 average.

Catherine - PlayStation 3

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Very Uncommon
Price: £15-£20 Used

Atlus games - whether published or developed by them - are usually not very common in shops and their value rarely drops to from £15 minimum. Before Persona 5 comes out, Catherine is the only 7th gen console release that is wholly developed by the cult game company. This game comes and goes, maybe appearing once a month or two in retail, and a used copy is almost always a minimum £15. It's a very different game from what Atlus usually does - which are dense, complex RPGs - and trades all that with an adult puzzle game that studies themes of faithfulness and settling down. And as with many Atlus games, it's hard as hell. If you really want to jack up the value of your collection, look for the Xbox 360 version of this game that has a different cover, that one is actually quite difficult to find.

Dragon's Crown - PlayStation 3

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Very Uncommon
Price: £15-£20 Used

Hey! Another Atlus published game! Well, here in England, our publisher for this game is Nippon Ichi Software, another company that provides many niche titles that aren't very common in retail. Dragon's Crown is a fun and surprisingly complex action game in the style of Golden Axe and any 90's side-scrolling beat em' ups. Developed by Vanillaware, who are renowned for their gorgeous style of animation in their games, the games looks fantastic, even if some of the character designs (particularly one female character) looks really weird and disproportionate. A copy of this game, like Catherine, comes by once in a while and its minimum price is usually £15. If you are collecting PS3 games, this is one of the titles you should go after.

Eternal Sonata - PlayStation 3

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Very Uncommon
Price: £16-24 Used

One of the reason I love the PS3 so much is that games - particularly RPGs - that come from the Xbox 360 first have way superior versions on the PS3, and Eternal Sonata is one prime example. Eternal Sonata is a highly underrated and surprisingly depressing RPG gem that is set on the dreams of Frederic Chopin while on his deathbed. This version is quite sought after because it has more content packed into it than the original 360 version, though both versions are in the same price range. Finding this is not that difficult as it's on the same level of appearance as an Atlus or NIS game.

Jak and Daxter Collection - PlayStation 3

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Hard
Price: £19-£25

The PS3 was an opportunity for me to live through what I've missed - and that is picking the Gamecube over the PS2. I love my Gamecube but I picked the wrong main console. Out of all the 7th Gen consoles, the PS3 had the biggest catalog of High Definition remasters of PS2 Classics. One of these is the Jak & Daxter, a series that Naughty Dog developed after Crash Bandicoot. Because of its low profile release and low print, this game is quite a hard find and its value has remained somewhat consistent over its initial price.

Another Classic PS2 HD release, The Ratchet & Clank Trilogy came with the original 3 games from the PS2 but HD'd, much like Jak & Daxter. Though it has a much higher profile release, its price hasn't gone down one bit since release and the fact that the re-imagining of the original was just released on the PS4, demand for it has been quite high, spiking up the price going to almost £40.

Tales of Graces F - PlayStation 3

TALES OF... PS3 SERIES
Difficulty Finding in Shops: Uncommon
Price: £10-£20

Along with Square Enix's Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest and Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei,Namco Bandai's Tales of is one of the biggest JRPG series in Japan. Outside of Japan though, it is considered another niche Japanese franchise, though has been gaining a steady steam this decade. Personally, even for its incredibly cliche' and predictable plots and having typical conventions synonymous to the genre, I absolutely adore this series. Yeah, the stories and characters are cliche'd as hell but I get the same sense where I am watching a Disney movie. I'm expecting typical Disney shit and I love it for it. Not only that, it has the most action-packed combat system out of its contemporaries where it almost touches on hack-and-slash. I put Tales of Graces at the front as it is my favourite of the franchise but the others are good in their own right. Tales of games are not that difficult to find but I only come across these maybe 3 or 4 times a month - the rarest being the Xbox 360 exclusive Tales of Vesperia and the original Gamecube copy of Tales of Symphonia, and the most common Tales of Xillia 2.

Wipeout HD Fury - PlayStation 3

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Very Uncommon
Price: £8-£15 Used

The Wipeout Series has always been a Sony staple since their first console and on the PS3, it has come back even better. The physical copy of this game was only released in Europe, where it had both the original Wipeout HD and its Fury expansion all in one. While it is quite sought after and a chore to even find a physical copy of this game, it is quite cheap. If you like fast-paced racers, this is something that should be checked out.

Bravely Default - Nintendo 3DS

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Hard
Price: £30-£40 Used

A lot of games developed on Nintendo consoles rarely lose their value. Apart from Nintendo in-house developed games like Mario and Zelda, other titles - particularly if developed by another Japanese studio - are highly sought after and retain their initial value. Bravely Default is a fine example of this as this has never dropped below £30, new or used, and it is actually quite difficult to get a hold of. Possibly the best Final Fantasy game to come out in over a decade (yes it's a Final Fantasy game, no matter if you give it a different title, the base concept and even terminology is the same), Bravely Default is an absolutely fantastic, gorgeous looking JRPG that harkens back to when the genre were usually just about a group of heroes defeating an evil that would take over the world. While traditional in its foundation and gave the job system an incredibly triumphant return, it sets itself apart by having a very innovative battle system where you can accumulate turn points, allowing you to do multiple actions in one turn. If you have a 3DS, you really need this game in your collection.

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Hard
Price: £16-£22 Used

The sequel to my favourite Castlevania game, Dawn of Sorrow is more of the same from Aria and I friggin' love it. The Kirby-style power stealing, non-linear exploration, and tight as hell gameplay are still intact from Aria but slightly prettier and in two screens. The beauty of the DS is it is the only Nintendo console to be completely region free, meaning it is very easy to collect for it. Dawn of Sorrow, while reasonable in price, was quite a notoriously hard find from my experience. Finding one copy alone is a blessing as this game is also quite sought after by collectors and it will be gone before you know it.

Along with Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia is also an incredibly sought after Castlevania game and from what I saw, it is a bit more expensive and even more difficult to find. I consider Ecclesia as Dawn's companion piece. While Dawn retained Aria and Symphony's metroidvania style, Ecclesia return to the series' linear roots where you actually go outside instead of staying in one castle. Like Dawn, it's 2D Castlevania at its best and I can't get enough of it.

Persona 4: Golden - PlayStation Vita

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Very Uncommon
Price: £16-£25

Hands down the greatest game on the Vita - probably the sole reason to get one - and a masterful remake to one of the greatest RPGs ever made, Persona 4 Golden is just nigh-perfection. The intriguing murder-mystery plot, likeable and endearing characters, a complex progression system based on relationships, and one of the most refined turn-based combat systems ever, this is a game in its best of its respective genre. Vita owners, especially new ones, always clamber for this game, meaning that it has retained its value and, as with Atlus games, is not very common to see in shops.

Kirby's Adventure Wii - Nintendo Wii

Difficulty Finding in Shops: Hard
Price: £18-£32 Used

Even though Kirby is one of the best-selling video game franchises in the world, his games are quite collectible as well as a pain in the ass to find in shops. His final adventure on the Wii probably takes the cake as not only does it rarely show up in shops, it has retained quite a bit of value. Kirby's Adventure Wii or Kirby's Return to Dreamland in North America is Kirby in his usual easy as fuck but fun as hell platforming with the usual copy ability he is very known for. An addition to this is 4 player co-op, which doesn't really add much. If you are collecting for the Wii, definitely don't let this pass by.

While Project Zero 5 and Fire Emblem Fates SE are my most valuable games in my collection in terms of how bloody expensive and rare it is, the Limited Edition for my favourite game ever is my most prized possession. I initially got this game for a mere £15 in CEX by luck but it has gone up in value after the release of Wind Waker HD. Not only does this version have Wind Waker, it also has the Gamecube port of the original Ocarina of Time plus its Master Quest version. Finding this game used in a shop was an honest to god miracle and as the years go by, this copy is getting harder and harder to find. So if you love Wind Waker like I do, hunt this baby down.

Xenoblade Chronicles - Nintendo Wii

Difficulty Finding In Shops: Hard
Price: £38-£90

Along with The Last Story and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (both that I unfortunately do not own), Xenoblade Chronicles has earned its reputation as one of the most highly demanded games on the Wii. Its small print and low key release, along with great acclaim and sheer popularity make this game highly sought after. One of the best JRPGs to come out in years, Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the few overpriced games that really deserves its high asking price. If you spot this for as low as £40, I recommend getting it as this game will spike in price as the years go by.

Games come out in different ways. Normally, there will be millions of prints to meet consumer demands. Sometimes, the print will be smaller as it is expected to not sell that well. Other times, releases are so limited, it has to be acquired from the day it was released.

This list is to showcase what I think are the rare games I have in my collection, pointing out how difficult it is to find it physically in shops and how much they cost. Please note, I am basing this on going out and actually finding a physical copy of the game - online shopping does not count here. Rare doesn't always mean expensive as some games, while difficult to find in shops - are still reasonably priced.

Bare in mind, I am only mentioning how rare a game is in the United Kingdom, which is where I live so chances are that the games on my list aren't as rare in your country.

This is an on-going list so I will add more games that I think are rare.
