One of the great human achievements and a work of simultaneously stunning ugly and beauty. It's easy to reduce Joe to its end, the culmination of an entire life and moment that defines and consummates one man's truly independent existence, but there's so much masterful writing in this. From what I understand, this series breathes in so much of what followed, yet somehow it's really never been surpassed on the level of writing.

Maison Ikkoku (1986)
The sort of masterpiece that not only leaves so deep an impression as to be literally unforgettable, but actually makes one believe erroneously there's some good in this world despite being animated. Maison Ikkoku stands as one of the few works to display the beauty of what, at least in the colorful realm of anime, can be called "everyday life"; in a young man's journey to maturation, love naturally and slowly blooms in truly organic fashion.

I fucking love this. Nothing so thoroughly and perfectly captures the spirit of masculine excess, melodrama, and beautiful lunacy of pro wrestling as Baki. It's the kind of love letter to pro wrestling that also says "you know what Kawada vs. Misawa could benefit from? Internal monologues and Freudian character writing", and it's truly brilliant. The fights are fantastic; the combination of weird pro wrestling styles clashes, artful ultraviolence, and character development through ass kicking is just magic. Not to reduce the series to badass fights, though, as there's a rich amount of substance in its character writing, most memorably in the masterful incorporation of the Oedipal dynamic, but also in the complex realization of many characters between and through combat. But really, it has Antonio Inoki using heel tactics and backdrops to try and win a martial arts tournament, this is effectively a love letter to people like me.

Osomatsu-san (2015)
I might be rating this too high since it's pretty inconsistent, but at its worst its still mildly amusing and at least half is utterly hysterical. It begins with the greatest work of parody it's been my pleasure to watch, a run of brilliance and hilarity to match Gintama at its best, and from there begins a series of brilliant episode after brilliant episode (until sadly falling off at episode 9, though with some highs still to come). It's all here; loveable, endearing characters, brilliant running gags that get funnier each time, masterclass use of absurdity, comedic juxtapositions layered atop one another. There's a long form gag leading to an epic punch line, something I thought only Gintama had the balls and brilliance to do. The first episode, "Totty", and Iyami Cart are all among the absolute funniest things I've ever seen.

Monster (2004)
It's occasional corniness and thematic silliness is thoroughly made up for by excellent pacing, a tone of unrelenting darkness that's natural and palpable, and a stunning conclusion. The whole closing passage is brilliant; it really feels like the evocation of the apocalypse.

Uchû kyôdai (2012)
Seinen bears connotations of DARK AND MACHURE, as that likely makes up the most marketable in the west, but, from what I understand, its more a demographic, series aimed at the older crowd (which might explain things like Shigurui being technically shonen), and I don't know if their could be a better representative of "anime for adults" than this.

Told with equal measures of humor and poignancy, Uchuu Kyoudai is series about a distinct and believable cast of realistically complex human beings pursuing their dreams. It's kind, warm, and optimistic about humanity, but the skill in its writing and how engaging its wide cast of great characters keep it from ever seeming head in the clouds or light. And all this great, endearing writing is told amidst the grandeur of space travel.

Prison School (2015)
A visionary work if ever there was, Prison School somehow melds zany sex comedy, unsparingly vulgar BDSM, prison escape drama, and high school romance into this weird and hypnotic mix that's often hilarious, exciting, and deeply compelling. I value anime and manga for the ability to produce things like this; where the hell else could I expect to find this?

Consider this an entry for the entire series

The junior work of a brilliant artist. It's unfathomably ambitious, how this was Nasu's maiden voyage (in college no less!) is beyond me. The effort alone deserves praise, but the fact that it's not only really engaging and has memorable and well written characters and moments of genuine excitement, but lacks really any specific failure for me to fault is just stunning. Endlessly impressive and really enjoyable as well.

It's viscerally impactful and leaves and impression, but is ultimately hollow, and the more you think about it the more you unravel eventually finding nothing. It's an exercise in subversion, and while I find this inherently objectionable, that it's a really unpleasant viewing experience is undeniable, and visually, though on the heavier handed side, it is effective. Still, where's the heart, you know? Yes it leaves an unpleasant taste, but without the substance of well written characters, which are markedly absent, all the girls just being the subjects of their individual tragedy, there really isn't much to praise. And yes, as has been asserted by all, the ending sucks.

Still, it's anything but boring.

I'm loathe to fault something its lack of realism because what the fuck is that? What is "realistic" art? Really? That said, knowing really nothing about basketball, how flashy the shit these high schoolers do is just too much for me to accept. Maybe it's the fault of the writing rather than the actual content, but Kuroko's super passing ability, the red haired kid's King's Haki, and the guy who always hits three pointers from anywhere kind of took me out the viewing experience. It has a real charm, yes, but for sports drama I'm left pretty unsatisfied. It was at least well done enough that I found myself caring about what happened, so I guess it was enough of a success.

Clannad (2007)
I'm told this series is a jumbled mess because it adapts several routes from a visual novel without much thought. Naturally, that puts a real cap on the series in terms of what it's able to do, but it's still a pleasant viewing. There was some great comedy in this that really made the whole experience worth the time spent
