The more I think about it, the more I think these two films should've been presented in reverse order. Planet Terror kicked Death Proof's ass. That's a fact.

...#4 We no longer have to pretend that Kevin Spacey is a Great Actor.

Have I ever once truly enjoyed a Tom Hanks movie as much as I'm supposed to? Will that happen with this one?

I don't like Edward Norton half as much as I used to. Will that change? Or does he just suck now. While I'm thinking about it I should probably rewatch Moonrise Kingdom sometime soon and see if I can't warm up to both Norton and that film a little more.

The "leaky bathroom faucet" conversation featuring Marisa Tomei in a silk nightgown might be one of my all-time favorite moments in 90's cinema, if you really want to know the truth.

Has Roman Polanski ever made a bad movie, or just pretty good and great ones? Hmmm... I should watch more Polanski.

Flight (2012)
I don't think an actor has ever been given a first-appearance in a film in a fashion so similar to a lame punch-line as Don Cheadle in the new Zemeckis movie. Camera casually pans right over a group of faceless suits sitting around a conference table until... BAM! Cheadle, bitches! Bet you forgot! We've got Cheadle up in this motherfucker too!!

Okay Zemeckis. Nice trump card. Just keep pattin' yourself on the back.

The most purely "cinematic" in the sense that we've come to cherish the term of all the Universal Horror movies. And the best sequel of all time.

I don't care how much you love Jeff Bridges -and I like the guy just fine- this movie would be better if you knew what the fuck he was saying more than half the the time.

Home Alone (1990)
It's the best thing John Hughes has ever written. Really. Even if he recycles a bit from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles at times. The whole "sweater with a big bird knit on it" scene? Priceless.

Okay. Everyone just calm down. And understand that if this movie had come out 2 years after the "internet boom" and not 2 years before it wouldn't crack the IMDb top 50.

The Wolf Man (1941)
Ah yes. 1941. The twilight of the "Golden Era" when one wasn't a star unless your very soul was essentially owned by one studio or another. This indirectly led to some rather odd casting choices- like for instance a 5'6" Claude Rains playing the father of the 6'2" Lon Cheney Jr.

Possible? Sure... barely.

Noticeably odd? Every damn time you watch it.

This Is 40 (2012)
Another 140 minute Judd Apatow flick? No thanks. Instead, a couple years from now I'll watch a few Paul Rudd clips from the movie on youtube if I get bored or drunk enough.

Planet Terror went first cause they usually showed the crazier/more action packed film first when they did grindhouse double bills. It makes sense.

Speaking of Hanks, you didn't enjoy The Burbs or Bachelor Party or The Money Pit!?!?

Couldn't agree more on Tomei, but more for me it's the scene at the end with her on the stand. Gives me goosebumps every time.

The Fearless Vampire Killers was painful for me to sit through. I don't think I laughed once.

Ah, that does clear it up considerably... just seemed like a bit of a bummer downshifting from Rodriguez's essentially perfect schlock-fest to Tarantino's chat-fest.

Of those I've only seen The Burbs. Which was fine.

Having not seen The Fearless Vampire Killers yet, I'm not convinced that's a criticism.

Love this. Been tempted to work in my stray observations into my monthly lists but there hasn't been a time when it felt right. Now I'm tempted to make a list like this...we'll see if that even happens though.

It's not so much that I think Spacey films are overrated (though they are) as much as I just think the guy himself is and always has been vastly over-praised.

Someone gave me his used copy of Avatar two years ago or however long it's been. But I've got at least two dozen other movies sitting on my shelves that I own but haven't watched yet that I'm more inclined to get at. Not to mention whatever comes my way via Netflix, Vudu, etc. So yeah, I imagine it will be a long long while.

Top 10 Reasons I'm Glad the 90's are behind us:

I'm curious to know the other 9!
Posted: 4 years, 12 months ago at Nov 27 21:18
Pretty cool list!

- grindhouse: I prefer 'Planet Terror'. Even Tarantino has admitted that 'Death proof' was one of his lesser efforts.
- avatar: I really enjoyed it but it is pretty much like 'Titanic' in the sense that it is a huge milestone in motion picture history so I think you should check it out, even though it might not be indeed a priority.
- django unchained: I tend to avoid trailers but I haven't been impressed by Tarantino since 'Jackie Brown' so we'll see.
- kevin spacey: I'm a huge fan of his and I still believe he was one of the best actors in the 90's. too bad he hasn't one anything remotely interesting in the last decade.
- tom hanks. I'm not a huge fan but has made some decent movies (can't stand 'Forrest Gump' though...). I hope to see 'Cloud atlas' this week-end but it is more a group effort in my opinion.
- roman polanski. Possibly my favorite director alive. I have seen all his movies and they are all worth a look. As a matter of fact, I' m working on one of those 'a complete review of...' about him. Check it out!
- edward norton: he is slowly but surely becoming one of the most overrated actors at work nowadays. After the impressive 'Fight Club' and 'American History X', he hasn't done anything really amazing. Ok, maybe 'The 25th hour'...
- my cousin Vinny: I really didn't care much about this movie but Marisa Tomei is an interesting actress.
- Flight: I'm not sure what to make of your comment but I guess you didn't like the movie too much. The reception is pretty mixed on this one.

I don't care how much you love Jeff Bridges -and I like the guy just fine- this movie would be better if you knew what the fuck he was saying more than half the the time.

I don't recall having a problem understanding him (especially compared to, say, Bane in the last Batman film), but will be using subtitles the next time I watch True Grit anyway.

Can't say I was much bothered by the height difference between Claude Raines & Lon Cheney, Jr., but then I'm 6'5" and my dad is 5'10" hehe.

Agreed on Home Alone and Shawshank.

Don't you inherit your height genes from your publicist anyhow?

Planet Terror kicked Death Proof's ass : totally ^^
We no longer have to pretend that Kevin Spacey is a Great Actor : you're a little rude, Usual Suspects, Seven n American Beauty are brilliant!
this movie would be better if you knew what the fuck he was saying more than half the time : true!
funny list ^^

Usual Suspects, Seven n American Beauty are brilliant!

I hated American Beauty. And I don't consider either of the other two to be brilliant.

Although I don't agree with EVERY single thing you've said, it remains a good read nevertheless. Keep up the good work!
