The Novel by WALTER TEVIS
"Eight year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of sixteen, she’s competing for the U.S. Open championship. But as she hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting. Engaging and fast-paced, The Queen’s Gambit speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four."
Ellen Page as BETH HARMON
The main charactress, Beth Harmon is raised in an orphanage after the death of her parents where she meets Mr. Shaibel who teaches her the game of chess. She is adopted by Mrs. Wheatley and by the age of 16 has become a chess master!
Jesse Eisenberg as BENNY WATTS
A chess master whom Beth defeats early on but becomes attracted to. They become friends and Beth moves to New York for a while and Benny trains Beth for the upcoming tournaments in Paris.
Harry Dean Stanton as MR. SHAIBEL
The janitor at the orphanage that Beth befriends and whom is the one that introduced Beth to the game of chess.
Tom Waits as MR. GANZ
A friend of Mr. Shailbel's who comes to the orphanage to see about this eight-year-old female chess prodigy, Beth. H is quite impressed with her skills and plays her several times before inviting her to a school to play.
Liev Schreiber as HARRY BELTIK
A master chess player that Beth defeats but also defends. Beltik helps Beth prepare for the Russian tournaments.
Ellen Burstyn as MRS. DEARDORFF
The head of the orphanage. She detests Beth's acts of rebellious nature of skipping classes to play chess, so after she catches her she stops Beth from ever playing again while in the orphanage.
Boris Spassky as VASILY BORGOV
The closest thing to an antagonist; Vasily Borgov is the one person Beth must absolutely beat in a game of chase, but throughout all of her attempts he eludes her.
Written & Directed by FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA
I liked his take on "Rumble Fish" which was a story written by S.E. Hinton and otherwise, Mr. Coppola is excellent at his craft as it is.
Fan Credit list of the novel "The Queen's Gambit" by Walter Tevis, the author of other books entitled, "The Hustler", "The Color of Money" & "The Man Who Fell To Earth", which were all also adapted to films. So why not this story about a young orphan girl who grows up to become a grandmaster at one of my favorite games: Chess.
