So Close (2002)

Favorite movie I've watched over and over in amazement. There should've been a sequel or prequel. Shu Qi, Zhao Wei, and Karen Mok are such a natural fit I was expecting to see them in movie after movie together. But there's just Love (2012) with Zhao Wei and Viva Erotica (1996) and Haunted Office (2002) with Karen Mok.

Starts out well and has the makings of a good romantic comedy, but it just awkwardly keeps adding on parts and fumbles its way to an ending. There's a flashback montage near the end that's supposed to bring things into focus but instead makes you realize how earlier parts were more intriguing and any expectations they set up really haven't amounted to much. Bad luck for the movie that there's also an awkward reconciliation in the same scene over some matter that was glanced over that feels equally forced and comes to mind as representative of the movie as a whole. In other words, sincere parts pasted together in an insincere way.

Listening to the Asian actors attempt to speak English is a large part of the fun of this ridiculous movie that attempts to be serious.

Disappointing because I was hoping for a lot more but still worth a watch for fans.

Passable entertainment but Shu Qi doesn't have much of a role.

Just One Look (2002)
Shu Qi is only in this for literally one shot and has no dialogue.

Wong Jing, so no masterpiece. Adequate in some ways but also leaves a bit of a bad taste.

Not worth it. Typical gangster posturing I have ever less patience for. Shu Qi's character is unimportant.

Might appeal to those who like gangster movies where everyone's a scumbag and, as always happens with scumbags, they turn on each other.

One of those movies that movies that makes you wonder how it could have turned out as bad as it did with good actors.

Beijing Rocks (2001)
Ugh. Really? I wanted my time back after watching it. I can't imagine anyone being motivated to actually spend weeks or months making something like this.

Ughhh. Please. How did this get made? Was no one saying "What are we doing here? Who is actually going to get anything out of this?"

Not having seen every Shu Qi movie yet, I don't know yet if this is the bottom of the barrel, but I'll be very surprised if I come across anything worse. I felt like I’d been conned when the credits rolled. Art house movie in the extreme. Very little happens and the characters walk around in a drug haze. The only more irritating movie I can think of is Pistol Opera (2001). If there were a movie that showed people’s reactions while being forced to watch Millennium Mambo (I’m picturing rolling of eyes, checking of the time, etc., escalating into breaking of furniture and vows of revenge), it would be far more entertaining than the movie itself. There’s no way I would’ve made it through the whole thing if Shu Qi wasn’t the star. She has very little to do here other than seem clueless and depressed. I'm not looking forward to seeing two more Shu Qi-starring movies with director Hsiao-hsien Hou: "Three Times" and "The Assassin." At least "The Assassin" sounds like it'll have some action.
