Final Fantasy VII - PlayStation

By no means perfect but probably my favourite PS1 game. Playing it years later it's striking how it's Nobuo Uematsu's amazingly atmospheric soundtrack that really carries it. FF VII is very much of its time, cyberpunk and sci-fi related anime was massive in the mid 90s among geeky western kids like myself (Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Guyver and lesser known franchises like Bubblegum Crisis etc) and this game fully embraced that trend. Personally nowadays I find the whole grinding aspect of JRPG's tedious to the extreme, but the sentimental attachment I have for FFVII that traces back to my teenage years still resonates.

Final Fantasy VIII - PlayStation

I have no such attachment to its sequel though as FF VIII is actually a fairly recent purchase. I completely understand why it divides opinion, there are good aspects and fairly terrible ones. It looks beautiful, probably the best looking PS1 game Iv'e played and as ever Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack is gorgeous. Downsides include a horribly disjointed and poorly written story arc, bland characters, oh and the tedious draw system too, ugh!

Final Fantasy IX - PlayStation

Such a cute game, only a truly heartless person could not warm up the characters, Steiner's a favourite, yeah I know he's not as sweet as Vivi but I find the guy so funny. To be honest I wish I'd played the game when I was a lot younger, as I think it's perfect for kids and I can understand why a a generation (a couple of years younger than myself) who grew up around that time have such an affinity for IX and in a lot of cases prefer it over VII.

Final Fantasy VI - PlayStation

My opinions a little divided, I need to replay it again soon, so many people consider it a masterpiece and I just didn't warm up to it that much. It's weird though, I wish I'd played it much earlier than I did, fact of the matter is The PS1 port was the first VI in Europe as it never came out over here (on the SNES). In fact the first Final Fantasy we had was FF VII. Oh and no Chrono Cross at all. Sucks to be us.

Tomb Raider - PlayStation

I can remember first playing Tomb Raider around a friends and being pretty amazed, I mean it'd been only a few weeks back that we'd still been playing Sonic The Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat and the leap from 16 Bit to 32 with fully realised 3D environments to explore was pretty immense at the time. That intro music and the atmosphere of the game really struck a chord with me, I love the relative silence of the environments and the sparse sound effects, for some reason that's stayed with me more than anything else and a good reason why I prefer the first game to its sequel...

Tomb Raider II - PlayStation

...because the first game had that sense of loneliness and such a unique atmosphere and the sequel had a whole bunch of gun fights with that terrible action mechanic. I mean don't get me wrong TR II is still a good game but I just love Lara as a explorer of lonely tombs and vast caverns over a version of James Bond with massive knockers...

...Which is probably why The Last Revelation is my favourite Tomb Raider game of the PS1 era, because it returned that amazing atmosphere and real sense of exploration that made the first game so great and in many ways improved on it.

Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation

Similar to Tomb Raider I originally played the first Resident Evil around my friends in my teens, I was obviously impressed (and highly amused by the um,classic voice acting). The first game I owned however was its sequel and what can I say? It's a classic survival horror, but you knew that already, right? I love all the little nods to The likes of The Fly and Aliens (as well as Romero and Fulci obviously).

It's probably the best fighting game on the PS1...but Virtua Fighter still kicks Tekken's ass, ha-ha!

Alundra 2 - PlayStation

Maybe it's just nostalgia but I still think Alundra 2 is kinda underrated, I mean yeah it's clearly a cheaper, cheesier Zelda clone for the Playstation but I still enjoyed it back in the day.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - PlayStation

Man I wish I had held onto this one, when I first played Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (going back to the early 00s) I remember being impressed by its graphics but just finding it way too difficult (I was a very casual gamer at that point) but I wish I could go back to it now.

Sure it was really limited but I have fond memories of sitting up at 3 AM attempting to make industrial/darkwave soundscapes back in the day. Wish I'd held onto this one too...

Scorchio! The football game with the greatest (mostly unintentional) comedic commentary of all time. I played the absolute heck out of this back in the day.

Gran Turismo 2 - PlayStation

I'm just not all that much into racing games but frankly playing this nowadays is a little like dossing around with a scalextrics set, the A.I of the opposition cars your racing against is basically non-existent.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy - PlayStation

As a kid I always wanted a MK game but I never owned one of the consoles that were big back in the day (Mega Drive and SNES) years later I got Mortal Kombat Trilogy...the ultimate MK experience right? Well I learnt that I am pretty shitty at MK, that's to be sure. Working out fatality combo's just isn't my thing, still it's great to own a MK game as they were such an iconic part of video games during my childhood.

Martian Gothic - PlayStation

I remember there was just something about it that I found unnerving, it had a unique atmosphere, being a survival horror set in sci-fi environment (years before Dead-Space). But overall it's definitely a flawed game, with over complicated elements and quite a few bugs.

I was going through a chess phase at the time but this game was just too limited, Chessmaster 9000 on the PC was infinity superior.

Whenever my friends come round to play Tekken 3 I always picked Eddy Gordo. I was never into certain games for their fairness and competition, I'm in it for the shits and giggles. Likewise in Goldeneye for the N64, Oddjob was far too irresistible to not choose.

Eddy's cool, he definitely has an unorthodox fighting style, him and Shun Di from Virtua fighter would be an interesting match up. They're bring Eddy back for Tekken 7, right?
