The Post-apocalyptic genre is concerned with the destruction of civilisation after a catastrophic event. Mass human extinction has been prophesied to occur in many different ways by science-fiction writers and theorists.

Pathogenic agents present one of the greatest threats to human existence and have blighted our evolution since the beginning of time. The rapid emergence, dissemination and high fatality rates of some viruses has rightfully led to them being considered with much fear and caution. The plausibility of deadly viruses extinguishing large chunks of human life have led writers and storytellers to incorporate the idea into various art forms.
