I can't believe they are finally making a film adaptation of this. It has been in the works since 1957. Kerouac originally wanted Marlon Brando to play Dean Moriarty and he would play Sal Paradise. Negotiations broke down over money and it did not happen.
Francis Ford Coppola bought the film rights in 1979 and had been trying to get a script written. At one point he had the project ready to go with Ethan Hawke as Sal and Brad Pitt as Dean, but that failed to get off the ground.
In 2001, he got a new script written and had planned for Joel Schumacher to direct with Billy Cruddup and Colin Farrell set to star as Sal and Dean, but this was shelved as well.
He finally got a $25 million budget, Walter Salles to direct, and started filiming on August 4, 2010 in Montreal. After filming there for a month, the production moved to New Orleans, and finally, to Mexico before returning to Montreal to wrap the final scenes.
It should be released to theaters sometime in 2012.
