Wow! A good Jurassic Park sequel!

Or not. Jurassic World is a dumb action film and nothing special, but it does take some time to create a decent setup, unlike the two other sequels in the series. And Chris Pratt, who I haven't really seen in a notable role, is quite charismatic as the COOL RANGER GUY.

The new Star Wars film is almost exactly what I expected: a somewhat entertaining sci-fi romp that desperately wants to be the best Star Wars film there is and thus forgets actual originality and takes the "fun-funny-explosiony" route and copies the original trilogy at every turn and caters to fans with a huge amount of pointless nostalgia and fan-service. The bad guys are bad and the good guys are good (who cares how many brainwashed, kidnapped-as-a-child stormtrooper slaves they kill or if they a leave an evil lady to be crushed in a garbage disposal unit for shits 'n' giggles; they are EVIL, that's it, don't ask questions). The Death Star is ten times bigger now and everything is very dramatic and amazing and pretty and not everything is CGI, but a lot of it is, and apparently this all is just bigger than goddamn life and let's all go to Subway to eat some Chewbacca Sandwiches or some shit. Fuck me.

The third best Star War though. Two stars.

I imagined a scene for The Lost World before watching:

A raptor is standing in front of Jeff Goldblum and they're staring each other. Jeff Goldblum is sure he is going to die and closes his eyes. The raptor is makes a terrifying roar and leaps toward Jeff Goldblum...

...only to get shot in the head midair! Blood splatters on Jeff Goldblum's face. He opens his eyes and turns his head to look at his savior.

A shot of the savior's crotch; we see him holster a huge modern (almost futuristic) hand cannon like a cowboy. The camera moves up and we see that he's wearing a bad-ass, brown duster. And we see that he has only one arm. And we see that he wears a raptor tooth on his neck. And then we see his face. And it's...

...Samuel L. Jackson! With a big scar over an eye-patch covered eye, and an unlit cigarette in his mouth. Then he speaks:

"Got a light?"

BOOM, onto the next scene... but sadly this doesn't happen in The Lost World. A lot does happen and all of it is incredibly dull and stupid and annoying and it just seems to go on and on forever. I'm exaggerating , of course, but after the first movie, I was expecting more from Spielberg (weird, I know).

Oh, well.

Apes kicking some human ass is a lot of fun, but highly intelligent apes is such a good concept for more than just ape action and the usual message: "We are all the same".

Even though I've seen Jurassic Park many times and remember everything about it very well, I think it's still pretty damn intense. There is a sense of danger in the film, which is something that many other big blockbuster thrillers lack. The T-Rex's first appearance especially, it's actually scary, which something that most horror movies don't how to be.

Some of the CGI works, some of it is ugly, but even the ugliest parts don't bother me much. I mean, at least it seems that it's used out of creativity, unlike today, when directors just use it, because they're lazy (hats of to the animators though; they put in a lot of hours and then people like me just shit all over their work).

So, I watched the original, unaltered cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy for the first time. I don't have much to say about the first two (Star Wars is pretty good, The Empire Strikes Back is great), so I'll go straight to Return of the Jedi. Because it sucks.

I mean, it's a dumb film. And not in a fun way, at all. The only notable female character made to wear a stupid looking bikini (because sexual slavery is sexy!), the fucking Ewoks fighting armored soldiers with sticks and stones and the Empire building another Deathstar that is almost as easy to destroy as the first one are just dumb, dumb things. The bits with Luke, Vader and the Emperor are excellent, but they're quite dark and don't cut that well with the sickeningly cute Ewoks. I mean, why couldn't they have been wookiees? It would've been a good opportunity let Chewbacca grow as a character a bit, but no. He just hangs around as sort of a comic relief like always. And so does Han Solo by the way. He has absolutely nothing to do in the movie, so in a couple of scenes, for reasons unknown to me, he thinks Leia and Luke have something between them and he's jealous. They probably should have killed him off in the previous film, since his arc pretty much completed by the end of it.

I enjoy the space battle with Lando a lot though. It looks great and it manages to tense and fun at the same time without feeling forced. All in all, it's one of the best action sequences in the saga.

But a couple of good things don't save much and in the end, the Star Wars saga is an overrated one; two good movies and four bad ones don't make one great. I haven't seen The Force Awakens yet though, but I'm keeping my expectations very low.

The Faculty is sort of crappy and it has a lame ending, but the film does have some... charm, I guess. I don't know what else to call it.

Anyway, Robert Patrick is quite hilarious as the superduper creepy coach.

Antonio Banderas' ridiculous overacting is very funny and pretty much saves Assassins from being a bore. I mean, Stallone and Moore are okay, but their characters aren't interesting enough to carry an almost actionless action movie that last for more than 2 hours.

Okay, I take it back, Jumanji's CGI is fine, compared to Escape from L.A. at least. Escape from L.A. literally looks like a video game at times. But it kinda works. The whole film is pretty crazy; full of zany characters, unexpected events, an incredibly cynical ending, so the crappy effects just add to it all.

The film's actually rather underrated and more than a worthy sequel to Escape from New York.

Jumanji is a a childhood favorite of mine, that I wanted to watch again after a funny reference I saw in the Simpsons. But since I'm not a very nostalgic person, I kinda expected the film to be quite bad. But it's not. It's not exactly good either, but the concept is a lot of fun and makes all those horrible, horrible special effects (the CGI as well as the practical effects) a bit easier to swallow.

Foxcatcher is such an uncomfortable film to watch. Every scene involving John du Pont (Carell) are just beyond cringe-worthy. And not in a funny way at all, but in a way that is just a very, very cold and sad. As is the entire film, cold and sad, and ugly and distant. This uncomfortable feel that film has is especially present is a scene in which du Pont desperately tries to impress his mother by giving wrestling lessons to professional wrestlers; absolutely painful to watch. Props to Carell for managing to make the character feel so creepy, yet so pathetic at the same time. Props to Tatum and Ruffalo as well, of course, amazing performances all around.

The Nightmare uses very basic horror and scare techniques, but they actually work, because the scary scenes are being narrated by people who've really experienced them. This is why a cheesy tagline; "It could happen to you!" or something, that you could imagine seeing on a poster for an old horror film, feels quite true in The Nightmare's case. I don't think I've felt this uneasy after a horror film in a long time.

I dunno, I find it kind of hard to blame Silent Hill for bad CGI aside from the climax. What is there until that point (the world peeling off and the occasional set blended into CGI-backgrounds) isn't too bad especially since the monsters are so very lovely and physical.

I mean it's a bad film because it's just a load of nonsense but still.
Posted: 1 year, 9 months ago at Nov 5 3:28
Funny, I kind of like the climax, despite the CGI.

I do disagree though; I don't think any of the CGI is any good and I find most of the monsters a bit silly. I mean, Pyramid Head is pretty cool. And that guy in the toilet.

But yes, it probably wouldn't be anything special, even with better effects.
