The last Game Boy Colour title, the Oracle games expanded upon what worked in Link's Awakening and resulted in a more consistent and user friendly Zelda. It's funny and has a lot of imagination in its story and gameplay. I personally prefer Ages since its time travelling mechanic is much more interesting than Season's weather swapping.

Possibly the most unorthodox game in the franchise since Zelda II, A Link Between Worlds ditches the progressive nature of completing dungeons and just lets you do it in almost any order you like, and is done with the new feature to rent items instead of finding them. The story is bog standard Zelda but it makes up for it with incredible use of the console's 3D, the best controls out of the top down Zeldas, ingenious dungeon designs, a clever paint mechanic, and a great sense of exploration thanks to its non-linearity.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Super famicom and SNES

If Ocarina of Time defined how Zelda games played now then A Link to the Pasts defined how Zelda games played back then. One of the best the Super Nintendo has to offer. Outdated control and mechanics issue aside, it's still fun to play, and this is the point where Zelda has an actual story in terms of pace, themes and exposition. It had a unique and at the time, an original gameplay system where you can travel between the light world and the dark world and doing things in between changes each worlds and this dual world concept is a staple in how most of the future games tell their stories.

Minish Cap is the Zelda game that fully establishes the Four Swords Saga into a proper story instead of a side story from the main stop Ganon storylines. Minish Cap is pretty much like Link's Awakening but with better graphics, better gameplay and just as funny humour. Also, your hat is your sidekick. How can you go wrong with that?

My favourite handheld Zelda game. It improves upon what worked and what didn't in Phantom Hourglass. Along with Link's Awakening and Minish Cap, this is one of the funniest in the series and probably has one of the rare cases where Princess Zelda is useful since she's actually your sidekick and along with Skyward Sword Zelda, has the most three dimensional personality.

While one of the easiest in the series, I think this has the best story in the series and also the most character driven. One of the darkest Zelda games though not as twisted as Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess has one extremely important factor that puts it as one of the best. Midna, your sidekick, is the main reason why Twilight Princess triumphs in terms of story. She is the best sidekick you will ever have in any Zelda game because of her likeable personality, sympathetic back story and overall role to the plot.

Since you can't lists video game characters here, I'll just make a quick list of the best sidekicks in the Zelda series:

1. Midna
2. Princess Zelda
3. King of the Red Lions
4. Ezlo
5. All the fairy companions (they're all exactly the same to me)

Whether you like the controls or not, I think this Zelda game has the best control scheme in the entire series, albeit not perfect and fully utilises what the Nintendo Wii can actually do. With the motion plus as its core control, Skyward Sword has the most intuitive combat system (and the hardest) in the entire series. While Fi is the worst Zelda sidekick ever, the story is the first time in the series where you actually care for Zelda (also the first time she's not a princess) because of her rounded personality and Link's relationship with her. The graphics is the second best in the series after Windwaker and also has the best set of dungeon designs in the entire series.

A game that became legendary from the day it was released and set the standards for Zelda games to this day. While I don't think it's as good as the top two, out of all the Zelda games, it is hard not to deny the impact this game has made to the series and video games in general. The soundtrack is the best in the series and the gameplay and dungeon designs still holds up to this day. Am I the only one that likes the Water Temple?

Definitely the darkest and most depressing game in the series and also the most personal. The game forces you to sympathise with the NPC that you know are going to die in three days unless you do something about it. The dark undertones, morbid atmosphere, varied gameplay, ingenious three day clock mechanic and the challenging difficulty makes me prefer this over Ocarina of Time, even though they are practically identical.

My personal favourite Zelda game and my favourite game period. Just for fairness, it has problems. It is one of the easiest games in the series and while I overall love the sailing, it can be a bit tedious and repetitive on certain missions and the fourth act where you have to collect the tri-force pieces is very annoying. Even if it has flaws, I can never bring myself to seriously criticize this game, it is just video game heaven. The timeless graphics, tight controls, atmosphere and sense of adventure just does it for me.

Oh Zelda, my one true video game love. While Nintendo continually suffers from over saturation because of their constant milking of their franchises one after the other and rarely come up with any original intellectual properties, The Legend of Zelda is the only franchise that they could do no wrong. While every new game is technically the same as previous, albeit with some minor changes, each game always felt fresh and exciting. To be honest, the biggest reason why I have Nintendo's consoles has always been Zelda (which is why I won't bother with Nintendo's WiiU Console for now) and whenever a new game comes out, it is a one of a kind occasion. To share my love for this forever enduring series, here's my personal list of which Zelda games are the cream of the crop, the absolute essential Zelda games to play.
