Boyhood (2014)

A great achievement and gamble in filmmaking by Richard Linklater. Captures what it is like growing up without being sappy. May not be Linklater’s best film but it is one of his most emotional ones.

Calvary (2014)

A dark comedy that is truly dark but still funny, like most of John Michael McDonagh’s films. Featuring a great lead performance by Brendan Gleeson and a cast of supporting characters this takes you on an emotional journey. Sad, funny, and sweet.

One of the best action movies in a long time. Great fight scenes (end fight is an instant classic) and chase scenes but more importantly some great characters. Not the best story but you will be on the edge of your seat.

A fun, funny, emotional, and thrilling sci-fi action film. Tom Cruise in a surprisingly funny role and Emily Blunt in the kick ass action hero role. The kind of films Hollywood should be putting out.

One of the biggest surprises of 2014! Has characters you care about and a great science fiction story that comments on society like all good sci-fi movies. Of course Andy Serkis was great but Toby Kebbell as Koba gave a better performance and is a great complex villain.

The Babadook (2014)

One of the best horror films in a long time. A great unsettling atmosphere with no jump scares like most horror films thanks to Jennifer Kent who wrote and directed this. Features two great performances by Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman.

Snowpiercer (2013)

Another great science fiction action film. Has great social commentary that is relevant to the world today. Also has some of the best acting in an action film especially Song Kang Ho and Tilda Swinton.

Foxcatcher (2014)

The three leads in this all give award worthy performances. A slow burn that pays off with a very creepy atmosphere. Bennett Miller directed this wonderfully and proves what a great director he has become.

The Drop (2014)

One of the more surprising films of this year. Didn't know what to expect when I saw the trailers, and it ended up being one of the best crime dramas in a long time. Wonderful performances from every cast member and pitch perfect pacing. Also, the most underrated movie of this year too.

Frank (2014)

A sweet, funny, and weird film about art and music. Destined to be a cult classic with its odd characters and story. There is not one person in the cast that is a weak link.

Gone Girl (2014)

One of the best thrillers to come out in a long time. David Fincher proves he is one of the best directors today. Rosemund Pike also cements herself in classic villain territory. And Tyler Perry gives one of the best supporting performances this year.

Selma (2014)

A film that is still sadly relevant today but still has an optimistic feel. David Oyelowo gives one of the best performances of the year as he transforms himself into Dr. King. Ava DuVernay also should have gotten a nomination for Best Director.

In my opinion this is Wes Anderon’s best film to date. Has a story book quality with its odd characters and crazy story. But it is also a sweet and funny film about life.

Interstellar (2014)

Christopher Nolan may not be the best at story or characters (especially female ones) but this film has grown on me. Respect its ambition and exploration of ideas. The film also really hits some great emotional beats in large part due to its cast.

J.C. Chandor’s direction has the feel of a Sidney Lumet with its slow burn story and perfection for its small details. Oscar Issac and Jessica Chastain’s acting in this were some of the best of the year with special regard to Chastain. This is a very intense film.

Nightcrawler (2014)

Jake Gyllenhaal gave the best performance this year! Dan Gilroy’s screenplay and direction has the vibe of an old school film from the 70’s. The film is also surprisingly hilarious but still intense.

Whiplash (2014)

In all honestly this was one of the most emotional draining and intense films of the year. J.K. Simmons should win the Oscar for Best Supporting Male as he is one of the best characters of the year. Miles Teller also gives his all to his role with his blood, sweet, and tears.

Blue Ruin (2013)

One of the best revenge films ever! A low key thriller with subtle performances that still will have you on the edge of your seat. The kind of film that stays with you for days.

A great film on celebrity, acting, and life in general. Michael Keaton should have won the Oscar as he makes a very unreal character come to life. Alejandro González Iñárritu also shoots this film beautifully in what appears to be one take.

Inherent Vice (2014)

One of the best film experiences of the year. An absolute insane cast who all are great but this is Joaquin Phoenix’s film. You may be confused as to what is going on but you will enjoy it.

Note: Blue Ruin only got a festival and limited run in 2013 and was released wider and on VOD in 2014. Snowpiercer also got released in America in 2014.

I chose 20 because I felt guilty for leaving some films off. Remember these are my opinion and you are allowed to disagree with me!

Honorable Mentions: Guardians of the Galaxy, Dear White People, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Guest, John Wick, The Lego Movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Top Five.
