yord's Top 100 Favorite Movies
"If the rule you followed brought you to this, what good is the rule?"
:: Ethan and Joel Coen [2] Review :: If ever there was a perfect film, this would be it. yord's rating:
"...you're a fascist pig."
:: Cuarón [1] Review :: Long and masterfully executed scenes with no cuts or edits, building genuine suspense and surprise in real time. And Michael Caine as a pot-growing hippie. yord's rating:
"Sand is overrated. It's just tiny little rocks."
:: Gondry [1] Review :: Kaufman's take on love brilliantly starts with the breakup and gets better, more sad and more hopeful, simultaneously, in that order. Yeah, I know. yord's rating:
"Guy gets on the subway and dies... think anybody'll notice?"
:: Mann [1] Review :: Cruise is utterly convincing as a cool contract killer in Michael Mann's philosophizing and very stylish thriller. yord's rating:
"Medication time. Medication time."
:: Forman [1] Review :: One of only 3 films that have won all five big Oscars, and it's the only one that deserved the honor. Sorry, Silence of the Lambs, but it's true. yord's rating:
"I've got some bad news."
:: Boyle [1] Review :: Truly heartbreaking at times and heart-pounding at others, this gritty indie-style horror really stuck with me. yord's rating:
"We are the witness of the universe becoming conscious of its gloriousness."
:: Herzog [3] Review :: Filled with quirky people and strange environments, right where Herzog does his best. I love the ideas in this film, but I love the images more because I will always remember them. yord's rating:
"Macaroni."
:: July [1] Review :: What an odd and beautiful film this is. Not afraid to take risks, Miranda July does stunningly well in her directorial/acting/writing debut. yord's rating:
"The earth I pass will see me and tremble."
:: Herzog [3] Review :: Hypnotic and alien, you're stuck right there with this doomed crew, floating down the Amazon with a quiet terror at the helm. Herzog's masterpiece of madness. yord's rating:
"I know how to do it now. There are nearly thirteen million people in the world. None of those people is an extra. They're all the leads of their own stories. They have to be given their due."
:: Kaufman [1] Review :: So layered, complex, intertwined and bizarre, it demands a second viewing before passing judgement. I was awestruck after seeing it, not knowing how to explain how it affected me. Decades ahead of its time, I hope Kaufman is granted such freedom of vision again and again. yord's rating:
"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing."
Peter Jackson's epic masterpiece. yord's rating:
A mesmerizing film and a powerhouse performance by Mikkelson, who utters not a word throughout and yet you can't take your eyes off him--like staring into an abyss.
yord's rating:
"But captain, to obey--just like that--for obedience's sake... without questioning... That's something only people like you do."
An inspiring but tragic tale of Ophelia, whose imagination could save more lives than anyone--if anyone was paying attention to her. yord's rating:
"They're filmin' midgets!"
Darkly funny, expertly cast, sharply written, and once the movie's central scene passes, you will be able to relate to the sadness that tears away at Ray (Farrel) and the consequences of such violence. yord's rating:
"Life's funny. To a kid, time always drags. Suddenly you're fifty. All that's left of your childhood... fits in a rusty little box."
Starting with its unrivaled soundtrack, this colorful, cheerful and relatable film tells the story of the shy Amelie, who has genuine heart behind her actions--if only she could find the courage to do them. yord's rating:
"Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone."
yord's rating:
"It is said that what is called the Spirit of an Age is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. In the same way, a single year does not have just spring or summer. A single day, too, is the same. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation. - Hagakure, The Way of the Samurai"
yord's rating:
"In other words there's something in me that makes me read it, and I instinctively interpret it as if it were an omen of the future, but in my conscious opinion, which is so fundamental to my whole view of life, I mean, I would just have to change totally to not have this opinion, in my conscious opinion, this is simply something that was written in the cookie factory, several years ago, and in no way refers to me! I mean, you know, the fact that I got--I mean, the man who wrote it did not know anything about me, I mean, he could not have known anything about me! There's no way that this cookie could actually have to do with me! And the fact that I've gotten it is just basically a joke! And I mean, if I were to go on a trip, on an airplane, and I got a fortune cookie that said "Don't go," I mean, of course, I admit I might feel a bit nervous for about one second, but in fact I would go, because, I mean, that trip is gonna be successful or unsuccessful based on the state of the airplane and the state of the pilot, and the cookie is in no position to know about that."
yord's rating:
"I can't help but wonder about my fate, my destiny."
yord's rating:
"The universe is an infinite sphere whose center is everywhere and circumference is nowhere."
yord's rating:
"A man writes because he is tormented, because he doubts. He needs to constantly prove to himself and the others that he's worth something. And if I know for sure that I'm a genius? Why write then? What the hell for?"
yord's rating:
"You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya--I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in! Hah!"
yord's rating:
"We must make an idol of our fear, and call it god."
