Microsoft Xbox 360 - Game Hardware
This is the first 7th Generation console I ever had. Twice. The first one broke down on me after 3 years and because of a certain game franchise, I had no choice but to buy the S model, which is a lot better and more reliable. This is the console where I mostly play Bethesda's Elder Scrolls and Fallout series since they perform better on it (I don't have a powerful PC) and I do have some good third party games for it but I don't find the majority of the exclusives impressive and most of the other third party games I play on the PS3 instead. One of my favourite game franchises and the reason why I bought this console twice, Mass Effect, was born here. It has the second cheapest downloadable games market by the form of Xbox Live Arcade and contains many classics and awesome downloadable exclusives that you can't get on the other 7th generation consoles though its point system I found very problematic as it cheats you to pay more since the points are not enough. I have never played a multiplayer game on this console since I don't like paying to play online, even if it's online service and interface is really good.

Favourite Game: Mass Effect 2

Other Recommended Games:
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 3
Fable II
Halo Series
Elder Scrolls IV and V
Fallout 3 and New Vegas
Lost Odyssey

Pros:
-Good library of third party games
-Has the best online service
-Bulky but very comfortable control pad
-Xbox Live Arcade

Cons:
-Prone to breaking down
-Pay to play online
-Microsoft points are unreasonable
-Overall not very impressive exclusives

Nintendo Wii - Game Hardware
The constant hunting that I did for this console was just so tiring. When this came out, everyone wanted it, all thanks to Nintendo's extremely effective marketing campaign and I didn't get it until three months later after it came out. The Nintendo Wii is a very surprising console since it completely beat its high definition competitions by sale as this console is pretty much like the previous generation by performance standards. Obviously, I play this console for the Nintendo exclusives like Mario and Zelda but I also have the Guitar Hero series on this console since for a long period of time, my Xbox 360 has been dead. The Virtual Console is a godsend as it has many great classics for very reasonably prices since at that time, I didn't own a SNES or N64 anymore. The backwards compatibility to the Gamecube was a very smart move but it does have a hard time reading the 3.5" disc in comparison to the Gamecube. While I did like the motion controls, the majority of my library is not reliant on it and unfortunately, only Nintendo themselves know how to utilise it on their exclusives, the shining example being Skyward Sword.

Favourite Game: The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword

Other Recommended Games:
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The Last Story
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Guitar Hero 5
Xenoblade Chronicles
Mario Kart Wii

Pros:
-Brilliant exclusive games
-Virtual Console
-Gamecube Backwards Compatible
-Unique Motion Control Scheme

Cons:
-Mediocre third party games support
-Catered a bit too much on casual audience
-Graphics and performance is a generation behind
-Motion controls performance depends on games, most of them quite bad.
-Online service is quite bad

Nintendo 64 - Game Hardware
Nintendo's entry into the three dimensional realm was pretty amazing in terms of revolution. Super Mario 64 revolutionised 3D platforming, Ocarina of Time set the standards for action adventure and Goldeneye opened the window for console FPS games with both single player and multiplayer. While it did lack in variety of games, its first party and second party support is second to none. I don't own one any more but thanks to the Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade, I can play the N64 classics. The most fun I had with this console is the Goldeneye and Mario Party multiplayers though the Mario Party is a gamepad killer, which was a bit annoying.

Favourite Game: The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask

Other Recommended Games:
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
Pokemon Stadium 2
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Goldeneye 007
Perfect Dark
Super Mario 64
Paper Mario
Banjo Kazooie and Tooie
1080 Snowboarding
Wave Race 64
Harvest Moon 64

Pros:
-Awesome first and second party support
-Faster load times because of cartridges
-The analogue stick
-4 player multiplayer

Cons:
-Lacks third party support
-Game pad is quite fragile
-Game library is not very varied genre wise

Out of all the console redesigns, the Gameboy Advance SP is the best in terms of what was being improved. There is backlit support, it has an amazing battery life plus it is rechargable, the design looks great and it is even more portable than the original design. The console has an amazing library of games and great third party support with a backward support for the Gameboy games and even better that some of the best SNES games are ported to this console.

Favourite Game: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

Other Recommended Games:
Megaman Zero
Final Fantasy VI
Golden Sun
The Legend of Zelda Minish Cap
Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town
Metroid Fusion
Fire Emblem
Pokemon Emerald
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga

Pros:
-Pretty much a portable SNES
-Amazing library of games
-Backwards compatible with Gameboy and Gameboy colour games
-Backlit screen
-Incredible battery life + Rechargable
-Incredibly compact

Cons:
-Clamshell design makes it a bit fragile from the hinges
-The recharge has a limit and can be hard to find a battery replacement

PlayStation - Game Hardware
This is the very first console I ever had and the console that ruled my early childhood. The Playstation is pretty much the console that spearheaded gaming to be part of popular culture. It is, in my opinion, the first console where I felt that it balanced both the casual and the hardcore audience thanks to its varied library, covering many genres, each having classics. It also introduced the DualShock controller, which is probably the best game pad in existence and the swappable memory card was an amazing idea. The games do need extra care if being handled since even the tiniest of scratch on the disc could sometimes render the game unplayable and its loading times were a tad bit annoying.

Favourite Game: Tombi

Other Recommended Games:
Spyro Trilogy
Crash Trilogy
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, XI and Tactics
Vagrant Story
Crash Team Racing
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Metal Gear Solid
Tekken 3

Pros:
-Impressively varied library of games
-Use of CD's (can also play music CD's on it)
-The DualShock game pad
-Swappable memory cards

Cons:
-Slow loading times
-Games can be easily damaged

Nintendo GameCube - Game Hardware
In my opinion, this is the most under-appreciated console ever. You'd be shouting "Sega Dreamcast" but I think that console is more appreciated than the Gamecube. It was always cast aside as a kiddy console and I think it deserves more than that. Even though it has a small library of games in comparison to the PS2 or Xbox, the Gamecube has a good number of quality exclusives and had a decent third party support and I thought some of them performed better than the PS2 and Xbox. The 3.5" disc format was very unique though it is pretty easy to lose and were quite fragile.

Favourite Game: The Legend of Zelda Windwaker

Other Recommended Games:
Mario Kart Double Dash!!
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Viewtiful Joe
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Mario Sunshine
TimeSplitters 2
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Resident Evil 4
Prince of Persia Trilogy
WWE Day of Reckoning 2
Soulcalibur II
Pokemon Colosseum
Metroid Prime
Tales of Symphonia

Pros:
-Great exclusives and a decent third party support
-Gamepad is awesome, on par with the DualShock
-Fast loading times and better performance
-Compact and easy to fit on tv shelves etc.

Cons:
-Small library of games
-Fragile, easy to lose 3.5" discs

Nintendo DS - Game Hardware
My favourite handheld console and for very good reasons. Aside from its backwards compatibility with Gameboy Advance games, the DS' library was just astonishingly vast, the majority being top quality and most of them utilises the touch screen extremely well. It was also the first handheld console to have a competent online multiplayer, even if it only supported a few games, Mario Kart DS being the greatest example.

Favourite Game: Pokemon HeartGold

Other Recommended Games:
Mario Kart DS
Pokemon Black & White
Pokemon Platinum
Nintendogs
New Super Mario Bros.
Sonic Rush
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown
The Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks
The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Grimoire of the Rift
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV

Pros:
-Vast library of games
-Near perfect touch control
-Gameboy advance backwards compability
-Unique control scheme
-Awesome battery life + rechargable
-Competent online multiplayer

Cons:
-Majority of games are quite casual
-Games are too expensive for a small cartridge format
-Easy to lose the touch pen
-D-pad is awkward when playing three dimensional games

PlayStation 2 - Game Hardware
I got this console in its mid stages after I had a taste of San Andreas. The PS2 did an incredible job building from the success of its predecessor. Including its universally backward compatibility to the Playstation, its library of games is just breathtaking, covering pretty much all game genres and the majority of them are very high quality. It was pretty much the console for everyone. It is also incredible that it is also the first multimedia console, able to play music CDs, DVDs and can also be online though not as good as Xbox Live's.

Favourite Game: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Other Recommended Games:
Grand Theft Auto 3
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Bully (Cannis Canem Edit)
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Jak and Daxter Trilogy
Sly Cooper Trilogy
Guitar Hero 1 and 2
Persona 3 and 4
Devil May Cry 3
Okami
Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec
DragonBall Z Budokai 3
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2

Pros:
-Has the biggest and most varied library of games ever
-Able to play music CDs and DVDs
-The DualShock game pad
-Backwards compatible with Playstation games, even using the same memory card type.

Cons:
-Most fragile out of the 6th generation consoles
-Games can be easily damaged

Sony PlayStation 3 - Game Hardware
Easily my favourite console of the 7th generation and the best multimedia console I ever have. This is the last console I got after the Wii and Xbox 360 and I enjoyed this console more than those two combined. I have not played one bad exclusive game on this console, most of them are just great and its third party support is on par with the Xbox 360's in terms of number and quality, even though it caught up half way since it had a not so impressive launch. While the online support isn't as good as Xbox Live's, it's hard to complain that you can play multiplayer for free though it comes with a price with DLCs (mostly multiplayers) being more expensive. As well as my main game system today, it is also my main DVD and Bluray player. The Bluray player is good though not as good as sole ones. The DVD on the other hand is just incredible, I consider it the best DVD player ever. Not only is the control and navigation easy and intuitive, it brings out the best quality out of any DVD.

Favourite Game: Uncharted 2 Among Thieves

Other Recommended Games:
Uncharted Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception
The Last of Us
Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch
Valkyria Chronicles
Journey
Heavy Rain
Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction
Infamous 2
Red Dead Redemption
God of War 3

Pros:
-Good third party support and incredible exclusive games
-Best DVD player ever
-Blu-ray player
-Bluray disc format is durable
-The DualShock Sixasis game pad
-Has the best graphical performance out of all the 7th gen consoles
-Free online multiplayer
-PSOne and PS2 downloads

Cons:
-Online service is not very well maintained
-Insistent on installation of games, which are incredibly slow
-DLCs are ridiculously expensive in comparison to the Xbox 360 or PC's
-Some games occasionally freezes

The SNES is my favourite console not because it performed the best or can play other forms of media or can be backwards compatible. It's my favourite because the plethora of games it offers are just mind blowingly incredible, covering all game genres, the RPG department especially being riddled with amazing games and each having their own bonafide stone cold classics and did a great job catering to third party developers, even leaving the SNES version of a game being superior than its competitor, the Sega Genesis. Most of the games in its library are still a match in comparison to today's games and its influence from the controller layout to the game conventions of today is an incredible importance. The console itself is very durable and can last for many years without having any technical faults. I mean, seriously, I cannot find a single fault with this console, from hardware to software, it is just an amazing game console.

Favourite Game: Final Fantasy III (VI)

Other Recommended Games:
Final Fantasy II (IV)
Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island
Actraiser
Megaman X
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario All Stars
Contra III Alien Wars
Super Castlevania IV
The Legend of Zelda A Link To The Past

Pros:
-Great library of games, most of them are timeless and absolute high quality with incredible third party support
-Most of the games still looks great even today
-Very comfortable and very well designed game pad
-Extremely durable

Cons:
NONE! Can't find any :P

The 8th generation is upon us so I look back at the consoles that I personally played for the past 21 years of my life. I rank them to see which ones were the consoles that were the best I've played, judging the quality of their games library and their technical and service performance.

How can you forget Tales of Symphonia from GameCube? I have Dolphin only to play this game. You almost donĀ“t receive my vote because this unforgivable sin :)

Just kidding dude, but you really need to add Tales.

To me the the contest of best console always comes down to the Super Nintendo vs the Sony PlayStation. Both have really good libraries but the PlayStation always squeaks ahead for me even though earlier 3D games don't always age too well. I think it has a lot to do with the RPG. I know they started to pick up on the SNES but they really hit their stride in the PS1 era.

Also, no Metroid Prime mention for the Cube? It doesn't quite take Super Metroid's place but it is still a great game.
Posted: 4 years, 7 months ago at Aug 28 22:37
Ah, Metroid Prime, completely forgot about that.

I like your comment on the Gamecube controller... I remember when I bought a Gamecube to play through Metroid Prime and though the controller layout was borderline insane. However, by the end of Prime I was really singing another tune (you really do need all those buttons!) and then few months later Luigi's Mansion proved it again when the controller made that game's control scheme actually work.
