James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart deserve mention. You should check out White Heat and The Big Sleep. 2 very good classics.

Gosh, there are so many. In addition to Cagney and Bogey, there is Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Cornelle Wilde, Victor Mature, Anthony Quinn, Marlon Brando, William Holden, Sean Connery, Walter Matheau, Jack Lemmon, Glenn Ford, Alan Ladd, Ray Milland, Dana Andrews, Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and I could go on and on..

As far as comedy goes, I think The Marx Brothers definitely deserve a mention.
