So, these are the movies I'm going to see at home during the following months.
I use 4 mediums :
1. I recently bought a new HD TV and also an HD receiver/recorder. So, I can record movies with HD quality. Good times!
2. I buy (mostly cheap) DVDS.
3. I buy (very occasionally) Blue-Rays (Actually, I removed them because my Blu-Ray player seems to be f*cked up and reads only 9 of them out of 10. Damned...)
4. I came accross this awesome website called 'Archive.org' here on Listal. There, you can find a whole bunch of free domain movies. I'll try to watch one of those from time to time.
I guess I'm old fashioned since I don't download movies, I don't have netflix, satellite, cable, whatever... I used to rent DVDs but the nearest shop has closed down something like 2 years ago...
The good news is that you can influence this list!
Rules :
- you can vote for any movie you want. It means you can vote for just one movie, but you can also vote for 10, 20 movies,... There are no limits.
- each time, you vote for a movie, it will get 1 point.
- you can also vote AGAINST a movie. In this case, it will get -1 point.
- you can vote only once for a movie.
Once again, I was inspired by the Mighty giraffe. Don't forget to check his list :
Help me lower my IQ this summer
Casting my votes for:
Son of Rambow
When You're Strange
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Biloxi Blues
The Jerk
Sunshine Cleaning
Metropolis (since it keeps moving up my list I figure it should move up your list too haha)
Casting however many votes I can against The Spirit though. It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I walked out on it & asked for my money back.
Looking forward to your thoughts on many of these!
1. Metropolis (Actually I'm a bit shocked that someone as versed in film as yourself hasn't yet seen it. Not a criticism, just that you seem to have seen so many of the "big ones" in cinema.)
2. Eden Lake (Very intense, and pretty dark Brit horror. I didn't realized when I picked it up that I was about to watch one of those horror films that stick with you.)
3. Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (Been quite a while since I saw it, so feel free not to take this recommendation too seriously. But I remember thinking pretty highly of it.)
4. The Jerk (Not as big a Steve Martin fan as many, but it's an American comedy staple, with some pretty hilarious moments.)
Nothing here I've actually seen that I feel strongly enough about to vote against. But I see a number of titles that I have serious doubts about and that I'd never bother with. So thanks in advance for watching them for me and reporting your responses so I likely don't have to sit through them!
On the other hand there are more than a few that I've been wanting to check out so I'll look for those reactions too! Cheers, and happy viewing!
1. The Dream Team -
one of Michael Keaton's best movies.
2. Planes, Trains and Automobiles -
I think it is a little over rated but it is considered a comedy classic
3. Julie & Julia -
Meryl Streep is great as always, I liked it even though the only thing I know about cooking is how to turn on the micro wave.
4. Night At The Museum - Battle Of The Smithsonian-
not as good as the first one but still pretty funny and worth a watch.
5. Death On The Nile -
I haven't seen it but I love Agatha Christie and Bette Davis is in it, so it's a movie I want to see -
which reminds me that I should move it further up on my queue.
6. The Jerk -
not my favorite Steve Martin movie but it was his first big hit
7. The Great Waldo Pepper -
I haven't seen it but I don't think I have ever seen a bad Robert Redford movie.
Votes against
1. Dreamscape -
Loved many, many 80's movies - but I hated that one.
2 The Boys From Brazil -
It has two of the greatest actors of all time in Gregory Peck and Lawrence Olivier - but the plot is just to creepy for words.
3. Kung Fu Panda -
I walked out on it in the theater -
King Kong is the only movie I liked Jack Black in - he annoys me no end.
4. Daddy Day Care -
One of a long string of Bad Eddie Murphy Movies.
I'm adding a few to my own queue thanks to this, thanks for the great list.
Votes for:
1. The Dream Team (I've watched it several times and it's always made me laugh)
2. Role Models (seen it twice, solid comedy)
Votes against:
1. Accepted (a couple good moments, but there's better comedies you could watch instead)
If I manage to watch Dead Snow or Baader Meinhof in the near future, I'll let you know what I think.
1. Death on the Nile
2. Traitor
3. Son of Rambow
4. Kung Fu Panda
5. Eden Lake
Against:
The Spirit
Huh. I've only seen three of these!
Vote For:
Role Models
Planes...
Cadillac Records (haven't seen it, but curious)
Vote Against:
Accepted
Voting for: Hard Eight
I'm also gonna throw in a vote for All the Boys Love Mandy Lane even though I haven't seen it yet, cuz I'm curious what you think.
A vote *against* "Freedomland"... I looked at the film and thought "Wow, amazing cast... why haven't I heard more about this film". Well, the answer turns out that it is a horrible , horrible film! I would say that it was worth it to watch Julianne Moore but she has dragged me into a few films I later regretted.
1. Julie & Julia -
I really enjoyed it, but I like just about everything Meryl Streep does -
it is especially good if you enjoy cooking - I am mostly a micro-waver myself.
2. The Proposal
3. Stealth
4. The Great Outdoors
All three Ok movies, but nothing great -
I wouldn't categorize them as a must see,
but they are not terrible either.
Vote against
1. Dreamscape - it still gets my vote against,
but I generally don't like movies about dreams -
which is why I didn't like Inception or the Nightmare on Elm Street movies either.
I will also simply vote FOR Earth Girls are Easy.
:D
it is one of my favorite comedies :)
Wrath Of Khan
The Voyage Home
Undiscovered Country
Generations
First Contact
Search For Spock
Insurrection
Nemesis
Final Frontier
Of course it would make sense to just watch them in order, but feel free to skip over Star Trek V.
I also loved the Star Trek reboot.
Happy viewing!
Films I'm voting for because I think you'll enjoy them: Book of Eli, Let the Right One In, American Werewolf in London, Adventureland, and (since I know you tend to enjoy the Apatow group of films) I Love You, Man.
Films I'm voting for because I think they're definitely worth seeing: Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Twilight Zone: the Movie, and Invention of Lying
I love Toys, but am in the minority on that. Duplicity is pretty average, as is Lovely Bones. I enjoyed Slither, but it's pretty average too...more of a fun horror movie than a good one.
And since it looks like you'll be watching the Star Trek series anyway I'll simply state that Wrath of Khan and the newest one are the best out of what I've seen. I'm not a big fan of Star Trek in general.
Votes Against: Wolf Creek, Deck the Halls
Enthusiastic recommendations
Trading Places - one of my favorite Philadelphia movies
An Officer and a Gentleman
Mild recommendations
Brewster's Millions
Bride Wars
Vote Against:
The Pacifier
As Roger and Gene might say - two thumbs way down for one of the most inane movies ever made.
Voting against: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
Tomorrow I promised the kid I'd take her to the theater to catch what must be the third installment of this series. Trash American pop culture animized..
I would think this would be a really nice feature of living in Holland, not being barraged by the American herd's evolving/devolving inability to tell an interesting, original, engaging story.
That said, watch Assault on Precinct 13 for a hell of a lot of fun. Young Frankenstein would make a family movie night movie.
Hey, watch Agnes and His Brothers for the club too!
Enthusiastic recommendations:
Twilight Zone: The Movie
Young Frankenstein
Doubt
Poltergeist
Mild Recommendations
The Fog
Sherlock Holmes
Unstoppable
Vote Against
Crazy Heart - nice performance by Jeff Bridges,
but I thought it was a pretty boring movie.
Star Trek (2009)
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Vote for - Witness - another great Philadelphia movie
Vote against - King Ralph -
(remember what I said about The Pacifier? - that goes double for King Ralph - it's breathtakingly awful)
Votes against: Hills Have Eyes remake (doesn't compare to the original IMO) and Sherlock Holmes (because there are better things you could watch instead)
Witness
The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
The Nun's Story
Fight Club
Shane
Vote against:
Star Trek (2009)
Vote against: Rent
I'd vote for Piranha but I know you won't appreciate it like I do. :P
1. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
2. Fight Club
3. Harry Brown
4. A Prophet
5. Sherlock Holmes
Vote against:
1. The Fountain
Votes against: The Devil's Rejects and Date Night
Against: Couples Retreat
Votes For:
Dr Strangelove
The Pink Panther
Dragnet
The King Of Comedy
Quest For Fire
Vote Against:
Meet Dave -
one of the long string of bad Eddie Murphy movies, also, don't feel compelled to watch those last two Star Trek movies - it's better to go right from First Contact to the reboot and pretend like the final two movies never happened :)
Votes for -
Knight and Day
War Horse - although my opinion of it is beginning to fade.
Vote Against
The A Team - disappointing, especially if you were a fan of the TV show.
Vote against After.Life (if I could vote multiple times until you decide to never watch it, I would)
The Secret in Their Eyes
Charade
Star Trek
Barney's Version
Fair Game
Vote Against:
Solitary Man
Star Trek: Nemesis
...and yes, After.Life
Vote against Labyrinth (though your kids will likely enjoy it)
Enthusiastic thumbs up:
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Hellraiser
The Phantom of the Opera '25
Troy
The Planet of the Apes '68
Mild thumbs up:
Inception
Labyrinth
Thumbs down:
Planet of the Apes '01 - an unnecessary remake
Grown Ups - so bad that it actually offended me as a movie lover, they didn't even try to make it good.
Vote against: Jeepers Creepers
Thumbs Up:
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
The Thing '82
Titanic
Intolerance
It's the Holiday season, so no thumbs down this month :)
Godzilla (Gojira) (1954) - The original Godzilla is much better then the 1998 shitty remake. The movie has a great anti-nuclear war message and shows the widespread devastation that the country had suffered in World War II.
Criterion just did a DVD & Blu-Ray release of the film which is worth checking out.
Late Spring (1949)
Horror of Dracula (1958)
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
Double Suicide (1969)
Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991)
Audition (1999)
13 Assassins (2010)
Vote against: Greenberg
So yeah, definitely Bullitt at least.
Thumbs Up:
To Catch A Thief
Annie
Notorious
Stalag 17
Jaws 2
21 Jump Street
Rise Of The Planet of the Apes
And Justice For All
Thumbs Down:
Jaws 3
Little Fockers
Vote against: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Very average, but not worth watching.)
I COULD vote for a couple others but I have a feeling you'll watch Drive and The Fighter soon enough anyway. And I'd like to think you'll enjoy Friday, but I think it's a film you would've appreciated more back when you still smoked. ;) Unsure how you'd feel about it now.
If you're open to suggestions not on this list, I suggest seeing Chimes at Midnight (Falstaff) and The Trial because they're much better Orson Welles films than Macbeth.
